You can 3D print useful versions of seven small workshop tools, but “cheaper” depends on what you already own and how you count costs. The best candidates are low-force helpers you can customize or print on demand; a printed plastic tool is not automatically a money-saving substitute for a durable metal tool. Compare material, print time, likely failures, finishing and extra hardware with the price of a suitable purchased tool.
When 3D printing a tool can actually cost less
If you already have a printer, start with the filament calculation: spool price multiplied by print weight in grams, divided by 1,000. Adafruit illustrates the formula with a $40 spool and a 110 g print: $40 × 110 / 1,000 = $4.40 in material. Its guide, updated in 2024, also mentions a 1 kg budget PLA spool that might cost as little as $20 under the conditions it describes; that is dated context, not a current price quote. Adafruit’s filament-cost calculator.
Material is not the full cost. Printer use, electricity, labor, failed prints, consumables and post-processing can change the comparison. LayerMath’s March 2026 guide estimates $0.50 in material for a small print of about 20 g, and $2–$4 in total production cost under its assumptions. Those are LayerMath estimates, not a measured buy-versus-print comparison for the tools below. LayerMath’s 2026 cost guide.
Windows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallOutdated Drivers Are Slowing You Down
One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware match- Printing is more likely to make financial sense when you already own a printer, the model is small, and you can use leftover filament or avoid buying a tool for a one-off light-duty task.
- Count bits, magnets, sandpaper and other required parts as well as filament.
- If you need to buy a printer or pay a print service for a single tool, the savings may disappear. Custom fit or immediate availability may still be useful, but those are benefits, not cash savings.
Which of the seven tools fits your job?
1. Micro screwdriver handle
A printed handle can hold standard 1/4-inch screwdriver bits, making it a compact option for small fasteners. One design variant uses a 5 × 3 mm magnet to retain a bit; another handle shape is intended to provide more torque. The magnet is only needed for the snap-fit variant. Treat either version as a light-duty handle, not an impact-driver substitute. The bits are extra hardware unless you already have compatible ones.
#1 Best Overall
- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
2. Vernier caliper
A printed analog caliper can help measure outside dimensions and gaps, and some designs also measure depth. It is best viewed as a basic measuring aid or demonstration: digital calipers are easier to read and more accurate, so do not rely on this print where precision matters. Do not rescale a model that includes a printed scale; scaling changes the scale’s accuracy.
3. Electric-toothbrush sanding attachment
This attachment is designed to fit a standard Oral-B toothbrush and hold a small piece of sandpaper. Its vibration can help with sanding details on 3D prints, but sandpaper is a continuing consumable and the attachment must fit the toothbrush model. The source suggests cleaning between sanding and tooth-cleaning use; that does not establish that repurposing a hygiene device is appropriate. A dedicated sanding tool avoids that concern.

4. Mini ratchet driver
The cited design uses a load-spreading ratchet arrangement, accepts 3/8-inch drives and 1/4-inch bits, and calls for tough filament. Check that the design and your hardware match before printing. Even strong engineering filament such as ABS can be weak along layer lines, so a printed ratchet should not be treated as a high-torque replacement for a metal driver.
5. Adjustable wrench
A print-in-place design is offered in stated size ranges of 3–11 mm and 11–16 mm, with no assembly required. These are low-force, light-duty plastic wrenches. Use a purchased metal wrench when the job needs substantial force, reliable grip or a tool expected to last.

- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
6. Small vise
The cited five-part design needs no supports and uses 85 g of filament. How-To Geek estimates its filament cost at less than $2 under its calculation; that figure is not a complete production cost or a general retail comparison. The vise suits light holding tasks such as painting, holding a breadboard or clamping printed parts for gluing. It is not a substitute for a heavy metal vise when serious clamping force is needed.
7. Mini sanding block
A simple printed block with a screw-tightening mechanism can hold sandpaper for hand sanding. The sandpaper is an extra consumable. Printing multiples for different storage locations can be convenient, though convenience does not by itself mean the set costs less than a purchased block.

Check the design and print before relying on it
- Match the task to the tool: reserve printed plastic designs for light-duty work; use metal tools for high force and a proper precision instrument for critical measurements.
- Confirm compatibility: check drive size, bit size, toothbrush fit, magnet dimensions and the wrench’s stated range before starting a print.
- Choose suitable material and setup: follow the design’s material guidance, especially for a ratchet. A tough filament does not eliminate weakness between printed layers.
- Inspect the finished print: check for incomplete features, cracks, poor fit or movement before use. Stop if a part slips, flexes unexpectedly or begins to separate.
- Compare the complete cost: include filament, added hardware and consumables, failed attempts, time and printer use, then compare that total with a suitable purchased tool.
Printed tools can be most valuable as custom helpers
Not every useful workshop print needs to replace a conventional tool. Prusa’s March 2022 roundup describes freely downloadable designs that its publisher says it had printed and used, including marking and measuring aids, clamps, a push stick, painting supports and Allen-key handles. That is evidence about Prusa’s featured examples, not proof that every printed tool is cheaper or safer than a purchased one. The broader opportunity is customization: small jigs and handles can be tailored to a particular task when the required load and accuracy are modest. Prusa’s workshop-tool examples.

Bottom line: print for light-duty convenience, not guaranteed savings
The micro screwdriver, toothbrush sanding attachment, sanding block and small vise can be useful when their low-force jobs match your needs and you already have the required printer or hardware. The printed caliper, ratchet and adjustable wrench call for sharper limits around accuracy, layer strength and force. Price the whole print and its extras against a suitable tool; the available figures do not establish a market-wide saving or a direct price comparison for all seven designs.
