To get more relevant Instagram followers, make your account’s purpose clear, publish original posts for a defined audience, use the format that best communicates each idea, and learn from the reach and engagement information available in your account. Instagram offers creator guidance in its Professional Dashboard, but neither that guidance nor Meta’s explanation of its ranking systems promises a particular follower count or timetable.

Make it obvious why someone should follow you

A new visitor should be able to tell who your account is for and what they can expect from it. Describe the account’s focus in your profile, and make recent posts reinforce that same promise. For example, a home-cooking account might consistently offer weeknight recipes, practical techniques, or meal-planning ideas rather than an unpredictable mix of unrelated subjects.

This is a useful way to help visitors decide whether your account suits them—not a confirmed Instagram ranking signal or a guarantee of growth. Choose a focus broad enough to sustain new ideas, but specific enough to be meaningful to the people you want to reach.

Create original posts with recognizable themes

Build a small set of recurring themes around your audience’s interests. A local shop might show how products are used, introduce staff, and answer common customer questions. A creator might share short tutorials, project updates, and lessons learned. Recurring themes make planning easier and help visitors understand what following the account may offer.

Bring a distinct point of view to those themes. Reposting or superficially copying another account is not a substantiated shortcut to follower growth, and the sources cited here do not establish Instagram’s current originality-enforcement details. Prioritize material you create or have permission to share, and make your contribution clear.

Choose the format that fits the idea

Use Reels when motion, a demonstration, or a story benefits from video. A quick repair walkthrough, for instance, may be easier to follow as a video than as a single image. A finished design, a detailed checklist, or a set of related examples may work better in another format. Let the subject determine the format instead of forcing every post into the same one.

Instagram’s Professional Dashboard guidance includes creation topics such as capturing attention, Reels length, and trending audio. That makes the dashboard a useful place to check Instagram’s current recommendations, but it does not establish that Reels always outperform other formats or that a particular audio choice will increase followers. Instagram’s October 1, 2024 announcement of Best Practices describes guidance across creation, engagement, reach, monetization, and guidelines.

Build real interaction with the people you want to reach

Respond to relevant comments and take part in conversations related to your subject. If a question genuinely helps people share their needs or experience, ask it; avoid adding generic prompts just to solicit activity. Thoughtful replies can help an account serve its intended audience and build relationships, but they should not be presented as a guaranteed algorithm trick.

Instagram’s creator guidance includes engagement and audience relationships. Use the current guidance available to your account rather than assuming that one engagement tactic works for every audience.

Use account insights to decide what to repeat

Review the reach and engagement information available in your account. Compare posts that serve similar purposes: which topics prompted useful responses, which formats reached people beyond your existing audience, and which posts led visitors to explore the account? Use those observations to shape your next experiments, while keeping the audience’s needs—not a single metric—at the center.

Instagram says its Best Practices area includes personalized tips and metric guidance. The exact information and recommendations you see can depend on the account and may change, so consult the Professional Dashboard directly. Treat a successful post as a clue worth testing again, not proof of a universal formula.

Understand what Instagram has—and has not—said about ranking

Meta describes its systems as using multiple predictions to estimate which content may be valuable to an individual. One example is a prediction that someone may share a post; Meta says no single prediction is a perfect measure of value. The explanation covers Feed, Stories, Reels, Explore, and recommended content.

This is a high-level explanation, not a stable recipe for gaining followers. Meta’s ranking explainer, published June 29, 2023, does not provide fixed ranking weights or a guaranteed route to more followers, and it should not be treated as a complete account of Instagram’s 2026 recommendation criteria. Be wary of claims that one secret signal, posting time, hashtag count, or format guarantees reach.

Check Instagram’s current guidance and your account

Open the Professional Dashboard in Instagram and review its Best Practices and any account-specific recommendations available to you. The hub announced by Meta covers creation, engagement, reach, monetization, and guidelines. Since interface details and platform guidance can change, verify current labels and advice in the app before relying on a specific feature or rule.

The official sources cited here do not establish a universal posting frequency, ideal hashtag count, or complete set of current eligibility rules. Follow the guidance shown for your account, and avoid treating outdated or generalized numbers as requirements.
