Email marketing can be the better choice when you have permission to contact an audience directly, want repeatable follow-up, and can measure campaigns against a clear goal. It is not universally more effective: social media remains useful for discovery, reach, and public interaction. The right channel depends on what you want people to do and how you can reach them.
Why email can have an edge
These are practical advantages email may offer in the right circumstances, not proof that it beats social media on every result. The cited evidence is limited: it does not provide a comprehensive, like-for-like performance comparison across the two channels.
1. It gives you a direct route to subscribers
Email lets a business send messages to people who signed up to hear from it. That permission-based connection can support communication without relying on a social platform’s feed to surface each post. A subscriber list does not guarantee that messages reach the inbox or get read, however; delivery and attention still have to be earned.

2. It supports repeatable communication
Newsletters and planned follow-up sequences let a business communicate with subscribers over time. This can be useful when an audience needs updates, guidance, or reminders rather than a single announcement. The benefit is a repeatable format, not a guaranteed conversion rate.

3. It can be measured against a campaign goal
Email campaigns can be evaluated against defined outcomes, such as sign-ups, purchases, or repeat engagement. Measurement is useful only when the goal and attribution method are clear, and results should be weighed against the work and cost involved.
A 2024 Transportation Marketing & Sales Association study found that 49% of surveyed marketing organizations tracked email marketing results or ROI, compared with 44% tracking social media. Those figures describe how many organizations track results; they do not show which channel produces higher ROI or performs better. The study’s search result did not state full sampling or geography details. Read the 2024 Marketing & Sales Metrics Study.
4. It allows segmentation and tailored messages
Marketers can segment subscribers and tailor messages when they have relevant data and permission to use it. For example, a business might send different updates to new subscribers and existing customers. This is a capability, not evidence of a specific lift over social media; its value depends on accurate data, appropriate consent, and useful content.
5. It fits lifecycle and follow-up messages
Email can carry communications tied to a customer relationship, such as a welcome message, a product update, or a post-purchase note. These messages can make the timing and purpose of communication more deliberate than a general public post. Whether that is preferable depends on the business goal and the audience’s expectations.

6. There is a B2C ROI finding worth considering
HubSpot’s 2026 marketing statistics page says email was among the top ROI channels for B2C brands, attributing the finding to its 2025 State of Marketing Report. The page provides no percentage or direct email-versus-social effect size in the cited result, and the finding should not be generalized to B2B or every company. See HubSpot’s 2026 marketing statistics.
7. It can diversify how you reach an audience
Using email alongside social media can reduce dependence on a single discovery feed as part of a broader channel mix. Email is not immune to technical or delivery changes, and the cited evidence does not quantify platform risk. The practical case is diversification, not a guarantee of reach.

What the lead-growth figure does—and does not—show
HubSpot’s 2024 Annual ROI Report describes a 107% increase in inbound leads after six months, based on monthly form submissions from 67,842 customers who had a Marketing Hub plan for at least 12 months. This is a trend among a vendor’s customers, not an isolated email result and not a comparison with social media. It does not establish that email caused the increase. Email can be a strong option for permitted, repeatable, measurable communication with subscribers. Social media can complement it by helping people discover a business and interact publicly. For many organizations, the useful question is not which channel to abandon, but which channel best serves each audience and objective.
