Playing with friends? Godlike.Host runs hosted 7 Days to Die servers from 10 data-center locations, with free DDoS protection.
If a 7 Days to Die dedicated server is running but does not appear in the browser, check the problem in layers: the active serverconfig.xml, router and host-firewall ports, SteamNetworking, and the client’s search and compatibility settings. Set ServerVisibility to 2, forward the required ports to the correct computer, then test from outside your home network. Discovery and joining are separate problems: a server can appear in the list and still time out when a player connects.
Start by separating “not listed” from “cannot join”
Use the symptom that you can reproduce before changing settings. It prevents you from troubleshooting the wrong layer and gives every later test a clear pass or fail result.

| What you see | Most likely layer | First action |
|---|---|---|
| No one outside your LAN can find the server | Visibility value, port forwarding, host firewall, ISP/CGNAT, or advertised port | Check the active configuration and the complete TCP/UDP port map. |
| Friends-only or peer-to-peer search finds it, but the public browser does not | Browser tab, filters, VPN, or public-list registration | Clear filters, use the appropriate peer-to-peer search, and test with the VPN disabled. |
| The server appears, but joining times out | Join-path ports, SteamNetworking, firewall/antivirus, EAC, drivers, or Wi-Fi | Treat this as a connection problem, not a discovery problem. |
| Only one player cannot see it | That client’s version, mods, world files, filters, VPN, or network | Compare the client with a working player and reset the search settings. |
A useful rule is to test both discovery and joining from two different networks. A second computer on the same home router may still be affected by the same NAT behavior, so ask one player to try mobile data or another household connection. If the external player cannot see the entry at all, stay focused on visibility, forwarding, and ISP reachability. If that player can see it but receives a timeout, move to the join-path checks.
Set the server’s visibility in the configuration that it actually loads
A running server may not be using the file you edited. Dedicated-server panels, launch arguments, multiple installations, and update tools can point to a different serverconfig.xml or overwrite it at startup. Edit the configuration belonging to the running instance, save it, and restart that instance.

Use the documented visibility values
ServerVisibility value |
Meaning | Effect on the server list |
|---|---|---|
2 |
Public | Advertises the server for public discovery. |
1 |
Friends-only | Shown only to friends through the supported friends path. A dedicated server is not itself a friend, so this can look like a missing public server. |
0 |
Not listed | Intentionally hidden from the list. |
For a normal public server, the line should be:
<property name="ServerVisibility" value="2"/>
Restart after changing it. If the value keeps reverting, inspect the host’s startup panel, launch arguments, templates, and scheduled update process for a second source of configuration. Do not diagnose port forwarding until you know the running process has loaded the public value. If you manage more than one instance, verify the installation path and the instance name in the panel before editing; changing a dormant copy has no effect on the process players are trying to find.
Forward every required port to the right computer
The default base port is 26900. The Fun Pimps’ dedicated-server FAQ lists one TCP port and a four-port UDP range:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
| Protocol | Port | Role described by the official table |
|---|---|---|
| TCP | 26900 |
Game details |
| UDP | 26900–26903 |
Master-list interface, Steam communication, LiteNetLib networking, and the additional join path |
Forward these ports from the internet-facing router to the server computer’s current LAN address, and allow the same traffic through the operating-system firewall. Forwarding to another gaming PC, an old DHCP address, or the router itself will make the server appear offline even when the dedicated process is healthy.
Make the port map stable
- Find the server computer’s private IPv4 address in the operating system’s network settings.
- Create a DHCP reservation for that address in the router, or assign a carefully managed static address, so a reboot does not move the destination.
- Create an inbound TCP rule for port
26900and inbound UDP rules covering26900,26901,26902, and26903. - Set the destination of every rule to the dedicated server’s reserved LAN address, not a client machine.
- Allow the same TCP and UDP ports in the host firewall for the game-server executable or its listening ports.
- Restart the server and test from a genuinely external connection, such as a player on mobile data. Testing from inside the same LAN can be misleading when the router does not support NAT loopback.
If you change ServerPort, treat the new value as the base port and apply the same offsets: forward TCP at the new base and UDP at the new base through base plus three. The rule must match the port the server advertises, not the old default. Remove or disable stale rules that still target the previous address or port so that a successful test is not confused by duplicate mappings.
How to read a failed port test
If nobody on the internet can see the server, suspect an incomplete map, a host firewall rule, the wrong destination address, CGNAT, or an upstream router before changing client settings. If the listing appears but every player times out, the advertised port may be reachable while one of the UDP join paths is blocked. Recheck all four UDP ports, not only the base port, and compare the configured ServerPort with the router rules.
When forwarding is correct but the internet still cannot reach you
Some home connections use carrier-grade NAT (CGNAT), which gives the router no directly reachable public IPv4 address. In that situation, a local forwarding rule cannot accept unsolicited inbound traffic. Router firmware may also block inbound rules, or an upstream modem may require forwarding as well. Compare the router’s WAN address with the public address shown by a trusted network-status service; a private or shared address on the WAN side is a strong indication that the ISP is in the path.
Do not keep changing game settings when the ISP or an upstream router prevents inbound access. Ask the ISP whether a public address is available, configure every router layer, or use managed hosting if changing the home network is not practical.
Align SteamNetworking with your network topology
The server configuration reference says dedicated servers should disable SteamNetworking when there is no NAT router between users and the server or when port forwarding is correctly configured. A Steam support moderator gives the same recommendation. This setting is not a universal “faster” or “slower” switch; it determines which networking path is used.
For a correctly forwarded, directly reachable home server, test with SteamNetworking disabled. If your setup deliberately depends on Steam’s NAT-assisted path, test the configuration appropriate to that design instead. Change only this variable, restart the server, and retest from an external network so you know which change affected the result. The report that visibility improved after changing SteamNetworking but timeouts remained illustrates why discovery and joining must be checked separately.

Use a simple two-test matrix: keep the port map unchanged, run one restart with the setting disabled, and then one restart with the setting restored if your topology requires it. Record whether the entry is visible and whether a join completes in each case. This avoids changing forwarding, filters, and networking mode simultaneously and then having no way to identify the effective fix.
Remove client-side filters that hide valid servers
An empty result is not proof that the server failed to register. The official multiplayer troubleshooting guidance warns that selecting too many search parameters can narrow the result to zero servers.
- Clear map, region, player-count, password, mod, and other optional filters before searching.
- Use the public browser only when you are looking for a public listing. For a friend-hosted or Steam-assisted path, switch to the peer-to-peer tab when it is available.
- Use the server’s SteamID search path when the host provides one.
- Turn off a VPN temporarily. VPN exit locations can change the apparent region, block discovery traffic, or send the client through a path that cannot reach the advertised address.
- Refresh after the server has restarted and allow time for list registration; compare the result from a second client rather than relying on a single cached browser view.
If one player sees the server and another does not, compare their browser tab and filters before changing the server. A server can be publicly listed while a client’s search criteria exclude it. Take a screenshot or note the filter state when testing so a later comparison is exact, especially when a host has several similarly named servers.
Match the game build, mods, worlds, and crossplay settings
Multiplayer compatibility is a separate gate from list visibility. The server and every client must run the same game version. A server can therefore be visible to everyone but reject a player whose build is older or newer.
Check the compatibility set
- Confirm the exact game version on the server and each client, including a branch or beta selection.
- For a modded server, install compatible versions of every required mod on the clients. Remove a client-only mod temporarily when testing.
- If the server uses a custom world, make sure clients have the matching world files and that the server is advertising the intended world.
- For crossplay, enable Easy Anti-Cheat (EAC) on the server and use the supported peer-to-peer search path when directed by the official guidance.
EAC is not required for every 7 Days to Die session, but some servers require it. A crossplay attempt can fail when the server’s EAC requirement and the client’s launch mode do not match, even though the listing itself is visible. Test first with a completely matching, unmodded client when possible; once that baseline joins successfully, add the custom world and mods one at a time.
Do not use a version mismatch as an explanation for an absent listing until you have checked the browser path. A build mismatch commonly explains a failed join or an inability to complete authentication, while a wrong visibility value or blocked port explains why nobody can discover the server at all.
If the server is listed but joining times out
Once the entry appears, stop changing visibility and search filters. Work through the join path and security controls.
Check firewall and antivirus interference
Host firewalls and antivirus products can allow the server to start while blocking inbound sessions. As a controlled diagnostic, add the game-server executable and the game client to the relevant firewall or antivirus exceptions, then retry. Keep the exception limited to the required program or ports and restore stricter policy after testing if it was not the cause. Also verify that the network profile is not applying a restrictive public-network rule to the server machine.
Verify EAC and launch mode
Use the same EAC choice on the server and client that the server requires. If a crossplay or protected server expects EAC and the client starts without it, the listing may remain visible while the connection is refused or stalls during authentication.

Rule out the local network path
- Update network drivers through the operating system or the hardware vendor.
- Test the server on wired Ethernet if possible. Bad Wi-Fi, interference, and unstable access points can cause a timeout after discovery.
- Replace a suspect network cable; a Cat6 cable is a reasonable diagnostic when the cable or link is unreliable, but it cannot correct a missing port-forward rule.
- Reboot the modem, router, and server only after recording the current port rules and reserved address.
- Try a second client or an external network. If every external player times out, return to forwarding, firewall, SteamNetworking, and ISP checks. If only one client fails, focus on that client’s drivers, VPN, EAC, and local firewall.
The Fun Pimps FAQ lists bad network cables, wireless links, router misconfiguration, and general network faults among possible causes. These physical checks matter after the advertised ports and destination address are confirmed. A cable replacement can improve link stability, but it cannot make a CGNAT connection accept inbound traffic or repair a rule pointed at the wrong LAN address.
Use a controlled retest instead of changing everything at once
Record each change and restart the dedicated server when the setting requires it. A reliable sequence is:
- Set
ServerVisibilityto2in the active configuration and restart. - Confirm the server computer’s current LAN address and the configured
ServerPort. - Verify TCP base-port and UDP base-through-base-plus-three forwarding, plus matching host-firewall rules.
- Test one SteamNetworking mode that matches the forwarding/NAT design.
- Search with all optional client filters cleared, with VPN disabled, using the appropriate public or peer-to-peer tab.
- Confirm versions, mods, custom worlds, and EAC requirements.
- Test listing and joining from outside the LAN.
This order distinguishes “the master list cannot reach me” from “the client found me but cannot complete the join.” It also gives you a known-good baseline before reintroducing a VPN, mods, custom filters, or alternate networking settings. Change one variable between tests and write down whether the result was invisible, visible but unjoinable, or fully playable.
When home hosting is not feasible
The publisher’s support FAQ lists renting a cloud server as another dedicated-server setup path. Managed hosting is worth considering when CGNAT blocks inbound traffic, the router cannot accept reliable rules, the server must remain online while your home PC is off, or you do not want to maintain firewall, updates, backups, and uptime settings.

Why is my 7 Days to Die server not showing in the server list?
Start with the active configuration and confirm ServerVisibility is 2. Then verify TCP 26900 and UDP 26900–26903 reach the correct server computer, the host firewall allows them, and the ISP is not using CGNAT. Finally clear client filters, disable the VPN, and use the correct public or peer-to-peer tab.
Why can friends see the server but strangers cannot?
The server may be set to friends-only with ServerVisibility=1, or friends may be finding it through a Steam-assisted path rather than the public browser. Set the value to 2 for public listing and retest with filters cleared from an external network.
What ports does a dedicated server need?
With the default base port, forward TCP 26900 and UDP 26900 through 26903 to the server computer, and allow the same traffic through the host firewall. If ServerPort is changed, use the new base and the next three UDP ports.

The server appears, but connection times out. What should I check?
Recheck all UDP join ports, SteamNetworking, firewall and antivirus exceptions, EAC requirements, network drivers, Wi-Fi or cable stability, and the client’s version and mods. Test from a second external client to determine whether the failure is server-wide or limited to one machine.

Can a VPN stop a server from appearing?
Yes. A VPN can alter the apparent region, interfere with discovery traffic, or create a route that cannot reach the advertised address. Disable it temporarily for both listing and joining tests, then re-enable it only after a baseline connection works.
Is renting a server the only option if port forwarding fails?
No, you can ask the ISP for a reachable public address or configure an upstream modem and router correctly. If CGNAT or router restrictions cannot be removed, renting a cloud server is the supported alternative. Confirm current-version, mod, world, EAC, backup, and configuration support before choosing a provider.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why is my 7 Days to Die server not showing in the server list?
Check ServerVisibility=2 in the active serverconfig.xml, forward TCP 26900 and UDP 26900–26903 to the correct host, allow them through the host firewall, and test from outside the LAN. Clear client filters and disable a VPN while testing.

ServerVisibility=1 is friends-only, or friends may be using a Steam-assisted path. Set the value to 2 for public discovery and retest in the public browser.
Why does the server appear but joining times out?
Check the complete UDP range, SteamNetworking, firewall or antivirus interference, EAC, drivers, Wi-Fi, and version or mod compatibility. Test a second external client to isolate a server-wide problem.
What ports are required for the default dedicated server?
Forward TCP 26900 and UDP 26900, 26901, 26902, and 26903. A custom ServerPort uses the same base-plus-three pattern.
Can a VPN hide a 7 Days to Die server?
Yes. Disable the VPN temporarily because it can alter region results or block the route needed for discovery and joining.
What can I do if my ISP uses CGNAT?
Ask whether a public address is available, configure every router layer, or use managed cloud hosting when inbound access cannot be provided.
The Bottom Line
Most missing 7 Days to Die servers are fixed by correcting the active ServerVisibility value, forwarding TCP 26900 plus UDP 26900–26903 to the right machine, and matching SteamNetworking to the actual NAT setup. Then clear client filters, disable the VPN, confirm versions, mods, worlds, and EAC, and test from an external network. If the entry is visible but joining still times out, troubleshoot the join path separately instead of changing discovery settings again.
