Red question marks in a Valmod HUD, toolbar, inventory, or menu usually mean the interface could not load an image asset. Legacy Valmod displayed some images from an online host, so a firewall block or an unavailable image server could leave placeholders instead of icons. This is normally a Valmod asset or compatibility problem, not a graphics-quality setting.

The safest first fix for the classic Valmod package is to replace its online-dependent XML files with the copies in the included OFFLINE FILES folder. Back up the current files first, because the exact filenames and folders changed in newer 7 Days to Die builds.

What the red question marks mean

Valmod’s custom interface is defined by XML and image assets. When a definition points to an image that the game cannot obtain, the UI renders a red question-mark placeholder. In the documented legacy case, Valmar identified two likely causes: a firewall preventing the request, or Tinypic being unavailable. The affected images were loaded through an online link rather than being entirely local.

Valmod later moved its image links from Tinypic to Imgur because host problems were outside the mod author’s control. That change improved reliability for releases that included it, but an older package can still contain the original links. Therefore, the age of your Valmod download matters as much as your network settings.

Check the version before changing files

Valmod was built for older 7 Days to Die releases. Current documentation describes a different XUi organization: instead of one all-purpose Data/Config/XUi directory, newer builds use XUi_Common, XUi_Menu, and XUi_InGame. The same documentation notes that controls.xml was renamed to templates.xml in V3.0.

Do not assume that a 2016-era Valmod repair applies unchanged to a current installation. Record the 7 Days to Die build and the exact Valmod release before editing anything. If your installation contains the old filenames and an OFFLINE FILES directory, the legacy procedure below is appropriate. If those items are absent, stop before copying XML from another release.

Prepare a safe backup

  • Exit 7 Days to Die completely. Do not edit files while the game or launcher is running.
  • Open the game’s installation directory and locate the Valmod files.
  • Copy the entire Valmod folder to a separate backup location. Keep the original folder name so you can identify it later.
  • Inside the current XUi location, copy Windows.xml, controls.xml, and styles.xml to the backup as well.
  • Note which other UI mods are installed. A second HUD, inventory, or menu mod can overwrite the same XML files and make a correct Valmod repair appear ineffective.

A backup gives you a clean rollback: restore the original files if the game fails to start, the interface becomes unreadable, or another mod stops working.

Use Valmod’s OFFLINE FILES (legacy package)

This is the documented workaround for the older Valmod layout. It removes the dependency on the remote image links used by the affected UI definitions.

  1. Open the 7 Days to Die directory, then open Data, Config, and XUi.
  2. Confirm that the folder contains the three files Windows.xml, controls.xml, and styles.xml. If any is missing, do not substitute a file from a different Valmod version.
  3. Delete only those three XML files after confirming that your backup is complete.
  4. Return to the Valmod package and open its OFFLINE FILES subfolder.
  5. Copy the three matching files from OFFLINE FILES into the same XUi folder: Windows.xml, controls.xml, and styles.xml.
  6. Start the game and load a save. Check the HUD, toolbar, inventory, and menu windows rather than checking only one screen.

The offline bundle is a coordinated set. Do not copy just one file from a different release: styles, reusable controls, and window layouts refer to one another, so mixing versions can create missing elements or new parsing errors.

What each XML file controls

File Role in the UI Why replacing it can remove question marks
styles.xml Visual styles used by interface elements. Provides the style definitions and image references expected by the Valmod layout.
controls.xml Reusable UI components in the legacy layout. Supplies component definitions that may point to local, offline-safe assets.
Windows.xml Window and panel layouts. Assembles the HUD, toolbar, inventory, and menu elements using the matching styles and controls.
templates.xml Modern name for the file formerly called controls.xml. Shows why a legacy replacement cannot simply be dropped into every current build.
xui.xml Assembles window groups in the current XML-driven system. May be involved when diagnosing a modern layout, but it is not one of the three files in the classic offline procedure.

Confirm whether the repair worked

Use the same save and screen where the marks appeared. A successful replacement should show the intended Valmod icons and panels in the toolbar, HUD, inventory, and menus. If only one screen is still affected, record the exact window and whether the missing item is an icon, texture, or an entire panel; that distinction helps identify a partial conflict rather than a general network problem.

Quit and relaunch once more after the first test. XML changes are read during startup, so examining a session that was already running before the replacement can give a false result.

When the OFFLINE FILES folder is missing

Absence of the folder is a compatibility warning, not an invitation to download arbitrary XML replacements. It can mean that your Valmod release predates the offline bundle, that the archive was incomplete, or that you are using a newer game structure.

  • Verify that the Valmod archive and its XML files all come from the same release.
  • Check whether the installation uses XUi_Common, XUi_Menu, or XUi_InGame instead of a single XUi folder.
  • Look for templates.xml rather than controls.xml; the renamed file belongs to the newer structure.
  • Do not place old files in a modern folder merely because the names look similar.

If the package has no compatible offline files, the reliable choices are a Valmod release that explicitly matches your game build or a clean restoration of the game’s own UI files. A legacy XML set can load partially and leave you with more errors than the original question marks.

Online versus offline assets

Approach Dependency Best use Main risk
Original online-linked Valmod files Firewall access and availability of the image host. Only when using the exact legacy release and its host links still work. Question marks return whenever the host is blocked or unavailable.
Valmod OFFLINE FILES Local XML and image references supplied by the matching package. First repair for the classic Valmod layout. Files are version-specific and may not fit a modern XUi structure.
Version-matched modern UI files Correct current folder structure and client-side assets. Current 7 Days to Die installations or updated UI mods. An old Valmod release may not have an equivalent modern package.

Troubleshoot by symptom

Every Valmod icon is a question mark

Start with the offline replacement and confirm the three filenames. If the marks remain, verify that the files were copied into the folder the running game actually uses. Then remove other UI mods temporarily and test again. A competing mod can overwrite the replacement at launch or provide an incompatible definition.

Only one panel or menu is affected

A single affected window often points to a partial XML conflict or a missing local asset rather than a complete host outage. Restore a clean backup, test Valmod alone, and then re-enable other UI mods one at a time. Keep the first combination that reproduces the problem disabled.

The game will not start after the copy

Exit the launcher, restore the backed-up XML files, and launch once to confirm that the base installation works. A startup failure after replacing files usually indicates a mismatched XML set or a folder-layout mistake. Do not continue deleting files until the original state is restored.

The offline files are present but do nothing

Check the release pairing, capitalization, and location of the files. The classic procedure expects all three names in the legacy XUi directory. If your build uses split folders or templates.xml, the game may never read those legacy files. At that point, use a build-matched package instead of repeating the copy.

Question marks return after a game update

An update can change the XUi schema or replace modified files. Recheck the build number, compare the folder structure with the Valmod release notes, and reinstall only a version that explicitly supports that build. Keep your backup so you can undo each test.

Check for missing local assets and conflicts

Current UI guidance emphasizes that custom assets must exist on the client and follow the game’s mod structure. Missing local icons or textures can therefore produce the same visual symptom as a dead image host. Inspect the Valmod package for its image and asset directories and make sure they were extracted, not left inside a nested archive folder.

For isolation, temporarily remove every other UI modification, restore clean game UI files, and add Valmod back by itself. Examine the game’s log for XUi parsing messages, missing-file messages, or asset-loading errors. The exact log wording varies by build, but entries mentioning XUi, an absent XML file, or a missing texture are more useful than changing resolution, shader quality, or GPU drivers.

Multiplayer consistency

Custom UI images are client-side assets. Every player who must see the same custom interface needs a compatible Valmod release and the required files on that client. In multiplayer, verify that the server and each client use compatible mod versions and that no client is silently missing the offline assets. A repair on one computer does not transfer the XML or images to another.

When to abandon the legacy repair

Use the legacy three-file replacement only when the package contains those files and the installation still uses the old XUi layout. Move to a version-matched package or clean UI files when any of these conditions applies:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • The game uses XUi_Common, XUi_Menu, or XUi_InGame and has no legacy XUi directory.
  • The installation expects templates.xml instead of controls.xml.
  • The Valmod archive lacks an OFFLINE FILES folder and its release does not document support for your build.
  • Replacing the files causes startup errors, missing windows, or widespread layout corruption.
  • Question marks persist after Valmod is tested alone with a complete, matching asset set.

At that stage, restoring the clean UI and selecting a maintained, build-compatible mod is safer than forcing a 2016 XML package into a current installation.
