If you cannot join a friend in 7 Days to Die, check compatibility before changing router settings. The host and every client must show the same game version, use compatible mods and worlds, and have Easy Anti-Cheat (EAC) enabled for cross-platform play. Then confirm whether you are joining a peer-to-peer world or a dedicated server, use the correct discovery route, and only afterward troubleshoot Wi‑Fi, NAT, firewall, files, or a live platform incident.
This order prevents a common mistake: reinstalling the game when the real cause is a version branch, an unsupported mod, a hidden peer-to-peer session, or a server configured outside the console crossplay limits.

Ask every player to write down the information below. A mismatch in any row points to a different fix, so collecting it first is faster than trying random changes.
- Platform: PC, PlayStation, or Xbox.
- Displayed game version and build number.
- Whether the host is running a peer-to-peer world from the normal game menu or a dedicated server.
- Whether crossplay is enabled.
- Whether EAC is enabled.
- Exact error text, such as an EOS, invite, timeout, or missing-session message.
- Whether the problem affects one friend, every friend, or every server.
The official EOS and multiplayer troubleshooting article, updated October 1, 2026, gives the most important compatibility rule in plain language: “Verify the server and all players are on the same Game version.” Treat that as a hard requirement, not a suggestion.

Check compatibility before networking
Match the game version and server branch
Compare the version shown on every player’s title screen or main menu with the version selected by the dedicated server. A game that updated successfully can still fail to join a server that remains on an older branch. Dedicated-server operators should also check the branch or version selector in their host panel; for the 3.1.0 rollout, The Fun Pimps instructed operators to select Default Public Version for the stable build.
Do not test with one player on a beta or experimental branch and another on the public build. Move everyone to the same branch, restart the game, and try the join again. If a console received an update later than PC, wait until the server and all clients offer the same release rather than repeatedly deleting local files.
Remove incompatible mods and custom worlds
For the first test, use an unmodded world. A mod that changes gameplay, assets, networking data, or the world format can stop a client from loading even when the version number looks identical. Custom worlds can cause the same symptom when one player has a different copy or when the world was created by an incompatible build.
Have the host create a temporary vanilla world and invite one friend. If that works, the network path is probably healthy; add mods back one at a time or restore the original world only after confirming that every participant has the same files and versions. Cross-platform sessions are especially restrictive: unsupported PC mods or custom content can prevent console clients from joining.
Enable EAC for cross-platform play
Crossplay requires EAC to be enabled. Check the host’s launch or server setting and make sure every player starts the same EAC-enabled version. A client launched with EAC disabled may be able to play locally but fail to enter a cross-platform session. Do not treat disabling EAC as a general workaround; it removes a requirement for crossplay and can make the session incompatible.

Identify the session type
The joining process and the failure modes differ depending on how the world is hosted.

When peer-to-peer is the right test
Use a peer-to-peer world for the simplest compatibility test: one host, one unmodded world, and one friend. It removes dedicated-server configuration from the equation. The host can set the session to Friends Only or Public in the normal hosting screen.
When a dedicated server is necessary
Choose a dedicated server when the world must stay available while the original host is offline, when more persistent administration is needed, or when you need explicit player and crossplay settings. A dedicated server is not automatically easier to join; its branch, EAC state, crossplay flags, player limit, and browser visibility all have to agree with the clients.
Fix a peer-to-peer friend session
Follow these steps in order. Test after each major change so you know which condition mattered.
- Start a clean host session. The host should launch an unmodded world, set visibility to Friends Only or Public, and remain in the game while the friend searches.
- Open the peer-to-peer search route. In the multiplayer browser, use the peer-to-peer tab rather than relying only on the general server list. The official EOS instructions specifically recommend this tab for joining a friend.
- Search by the host’s SteamID or name. Enter the host’s SteamID when available; otherwise search the exact account name. This is more reliable than scrolling through a large public list.
- Clear restrictive filters. Too many browser filters can hide a valid session. Remove limits for region, player count, ping, map, or other categories, run the search again, and reapply only the filters you actually need.
- Accept a fresh invite after the session appears. Have the host send a new invitation after the world is visible. An invitation created before the host restarted may point to an expired session.
- Check that the host remains connected. In a peer-to-peer world, closing the host’s game ends the world. A friend who tries to join after the host exits will not find an active session.
- Repeat with one friend only. If one friend can join but another cannot, compare the failing player’s version, EAC state, mods, platform, NAT, and firewall rather than changing the host world immediately.
- Try the opposite host. Have the other player host an unmodded Friends Only world. If the direction changes the result, investigate the original host’s network, firewall, or platform account rather than the game installation of every client.
Configure a dedicated server for console crossplay
For a console-compatible dedicated server, verify these values in the server configuration. The values below are the requirements identified by The Fun Pimps for crossplay guidance in 2026.

Apply and verify the configuration
- Stop the dedicated-server process before editing its configuration.
- Set
ServerAllowCrossplay=True,EACEnabled=True, andIgnoreEOSSanctions=False. - Set
ServerMaxPlayerCountto 8 or lower. - Review the remaining crossplay-related settings against the current official ranges; do not assume a value copied from an older guide is still valid.
- Save the file, start the server, and wait for it to finish loading.
- Confirm that the server and all clients are on the same public version and branch.
- Have a PC player and a console player search again with broad browser filters before narrowing the list.
If PC clients can join but console clients cannot, recheck these flags and the player limit before changing DNS or reinstalling the game. A server outside the console-supported configuration can look healthy to PC users while rejecting console connections.
Work through local network causes
Once compatibility and hosting settings are correct, test the connection itself. Network changes cannot repair a version mismatch, disabled EAC, unsupported mod, or invalid server configuration.
1. Test Ethernet
Connect one affected PC or console directly to the router with Ethernet; a Cat6 cable is suitable for this diagnostic. The official basic network guidance says, “If you are using a wireless connection, try using a wired connection as this is typically more stable.” If joining works over Ethernet but not Wi‑Fi, focus on wireless signal quality, interference, mesh-node placement, or router roaming rather than game files.
2. Power-cycle the network
- Exit the game on every device.
- Turn off the modem and router or remove their power for about 30 seconds.
- Restore power, wait until the internet and Wi‑Fi indicators are stable, and restart the host first.
- Start the friend’s client only after the host session or server is visible.
This clears temporary router state; it does not change account permissions or server settings.

3. Update every software layer
Install pending updates for Windows or the console operating system, the game, platform services, network adapter drivers, and router firmware. Restart after major updates. A client that is technically online but running an older game or driver can produce a generic timeout that looks like a server failure.

4. Check NAT status
Look at the platform’s network test and note whether NAT is open, moderate, or strict. A strict NAT can prevent peer-to-peer discovery or incoming connections. If possible, test the host on a different network, such as a phone hotspot, only long enough to identify whether the home router is involved. A successful alternate-network test points toward router NAT, port handling, or ISP filtering; it does not prove that the game server itself is faulty.
5. Allow the game through Windows Firewall
On Windows, open Windows Security → Firewall & network protection → Allow an app through firewall. Ensure the game and its platform service are allowed on the network profile you actually use. If your organization manages the PC, a policy may prevent changes; in that case, ask the administrator rather than disabling the firewall entirely.
6. Flush DNS or test a supported public DNS
Open Command Prompt as an administrator and run:
ipconfig /flushdnsRestart the game and test again. If name resolution still appears unreliable, test a reputable public DNS service supported in your region by changing the router or device DNS settings, recording the original values first so you can restore them. DNS changes can help when a hostname fails to resolve; they cannot fix closed NAT, an unavailable platform service, or an incompatible server.
Repair the PC installation and local data
Verify the game files
Use the platform client’s file-verification command for 7 Days to Die. Verification replaces missing or corrupted files without deleting your saves. Restart the platform client after it completes and launch the game normally, with EAC enabled when crossplay is required.
Clean 7 Days to Die data only after backing up saves
If verification does not help, back up local saves and configuration first. Then remove or rename the game’s local data as directed by the current official troubleshooting instructions, launch once to recreate clean data, and test a new unmodded world. Restore saves only after the clean test works. A damaged or stale configuration can survive a routine file verification, while deleting data without a backup can permanently remove locally stored worlds.

Check antivirus interference
The official general troubleshooting guidance discusses excluding the Steam folder from antivirus scanning. Treat an exclusion as a temporary diagnostic change: record the original antivirus settings, add only the documented game folder, test the join, and remove the exclusion if it makes no difference. Do not install third-party “repair” utilities or turn off all security protections as a substitute for identifying the blocked executable.
Use the symptom to choose the next test

Check for a live incident before reinstalling
A service-side problem can imitate a local failure. The Fun Pimps staff notice covering the 3.1.0 stable release, published across July–September 2026, stated that the stable build was live on PC, PlayStation, and Xbox. It also reported Xbox server issues and PlayStation Friends Only or invite problems. For that incident, dedicated-server operators were told to select Default Public Version.
If your symptoms began during a rollout and affect one platform or one invitation method, read the newest Fun Pimps support notice and platform status information first. Do not alter a healthy save because a temporary Xbox server issue or PlayStation invite problem makes a friend session look broken.
What connection testing can and cannot prove
No independent performance benchmark, minimum bandwidth figure, or multiplayer success-rate statistic is established in the available official material. Avoid guides that promise a particular download speed will guarantee a join. A stable wired test, open NAT, current software, and permitted firewall traffic are useful diagnostics, but they do not override compatibility or server-side outages.
After it works: prevent the next failed join
- Keep every player on the same public game branch and update before opening the world.
- Record the host’s platform, version, EAC state, and whether the world is peer-to-peer or dedicated.
- Use a clean unmodded test world when adding a new mod, custom world, or major update.
- For crossplay servers, keep the documented flags and the player limit of 8 or lower in a configuration note.
- Use the peer-to-peer tab and SteamID search when a friend’s hosted world is not visible.
- Leave broad browser filters in place until the session appears, then narrow them.
- Keep game, operating-system, platform, network-adapter, and router firmware updates current.
- Back up local saves before cleaning game data or changing security software.
- Check official incident notices when a problem starts immediately after a release or affects only one platform.
Following this order isolates the failure instead of masking it: compatibility first, session discovery second, dedicated-server settings third, local networking fourth, and PC repair last.
