Heat is a per-chunk activity score in 7 Days to Die. Mining, shooting, lighting fires, placing objects and dismantling blocks can raise it; stopping activity allows it to fade. Screamers scout toward a hot chunk, and a screamer that sees you can call zombies. Repeated heatmap resets can also produce a pitstop horde that attacks the heat-producing workstation or other object. The exact heat values, decay timing and some screamer rules are not confirmed by a developer-published reference, so treat numeric community tables as version-specific experiments rather than official mechanics.
What the heatmap measures
The game tracks heat separately for each chunk, described by community guides as an area of roughly 16 by 16 blocks. Activity in that chunk contributes to its heat value. Heat is not a global score shared across the entire world: a busy workshop can attract trouble locally while a nearby, quiet chunk remains comparatively safe.

- Actions that raise heat: placing objects, firing weapons, lighting campfires and dismantling objects. Mining and explosions are also commonly reported as heat-producing actions.
- Heat that fades: leaving the chunk alone and becoming inactive lets the value decay. The exact decay rate is not established by a primary source.
- What heat does: it gives scouting zombies a reason to search that chunk and provides the conditions for later horde events.
Think of heat as an activity trail, not a visible thermometer. You can work in a hot chunk for a while without an immediate attack, then receive a screamer when the accumulated activity makes that location attractive.
How to inspect heat in a live game
A player can view a chunk’s heat value through the console’s debug mode. The exact menu wording and key binding can differ by platform, keymap and Alpha build, so use the current in-game help for the debug toggle rather than relying on an old command list.

- Make a backup of the save if you are testing mechanics you do not want to disturb.
- Open the developer console using your platform’s console key.
- Enable debug mode from the console or the build’s debug interface.
- Stand in the chunk containing the activity you want to measure and read the displayed heat information.
- Record the value, perform one controlled action, and check again. Repeat in a fresh chunk so you do not confuse old accumulated heat with the action you are testing.
- Stop activity and check at fixed intervals. This lets you observe decay without presenting the result as an official decay-rate figure.
Debug readouts are most useful for comparing your own base layouts and habits. A value from one Alpha build should not be assumed to apply unchanged after a patch.
What triggers screamers
Heat-producing work
Workstations, fires, mining, shooting and construction all make a location more active. A forge or campfire can therefore attract attention even while the player is elsewhere. Dismantling objects also contributes heat, so clearing a large room can be noisier from the heatmap’s perspective than its quiet animation suggests.

Earlier versions used the Spider Zombie as the main scout. Current community descriptions assign that scouting role to screamers: they wander toward the heat source and investigate the chunk.
When a screamer sees you
If a screamer spots a player, it screams and spawns random zombies. If it is not killed quickly, additional screamers or the summoned group can turn the encounter into a full horde. The practical implication is simple: a screamer near a busy base is an emergency, not a routine wandering zombie.
When it never gets line of sight
A screamer that cannot find a player may eventually stop waiting and move toward the heat-producing object, such as a forge or campfire, while still summoning zombies. Hiding does not guarantee that the event ends; it can merely change the target from you to the source of the heat.

How to prevent a screamer chain
- Keep a response lane. Leave a clear route from your firing position to the likely approach direction so you can kill the scout before it reaches the base.
- Watch the perimeter during hot work. When several forges, campfires or workstations are running, assign one player to scan outside instead of focusing only on crafting menus.
- Break line of sight deliberately. Walls and terrain can delay a scream, but do not assume they cancel the event; the scout can still pursue the heat source.
- Prioritize the screamer. Stop ordinary fighting and eliminate the screamer before clearing its summons. Every second it remains active increases the chance of a larger engagement.
- Reduce simultaneous activity. Run fewer fires or workstations at once when you are under-equipped, and move noisy jobs to a separate, defensible chunk when practical.
- Allow recovery time. After a long mining, building or shooting session, stop generating heat and let the area cool before starting another major task.
These measures reduce exposure; they do not create immunity. A quiet base can still receive a scout if earlier activity has not decayed.

Community heat numbers: useful clues, not official settings
One community wiki reports the following values: five heat per block mined, 15 per gunshot and 25 per explosion. The same page says a silencer cuts gunfire heat by 75 percent. No second source in the available material confirms those figures, and forum participants could not agree on the exact decay rate. Some suggested the system changed in Alpha 20.
| Reported action or modifier | Community figure | How to use it |
|---|---|---|
| Mining one block | 5 heat | Use only as a rough test hypothesis for the build you are playing. |
| One gunshot | 15 heat | Do not treat it as a guaranteed value for every weapon or Alpha. |
| One explosion | 25 heat | Expect version and event-specific differences until verified in your build. |
| Silencer effect on gunfire heat | 75% reduction, as reported | Community-only claim; confirm with controlled debug tests. |
| Heat decay rate | Not established | Measure elapsed time and your own readout rather than using a universal timer. |
These numbers are not developer statistics. They should not be used to promise that a certain number of shots or mined blocks will summon a screamer.
Pitstop hordes: a different heat event
A pitstop horde is associated with repeated resets of a chunk’s heatmap. Community descriptions say the event becomes harder as the number of resets increases. It is therefore different from the ordinary screamer loop: a screamer is a scout responding to heat, while a pitstop horde is a larger event tied to repeated heat-reset cycles.
What a pitstop horde can contain
Reports include special infected such as Screamers, Demolishers and Feral Wights. The exact composition is not fixed in the available evidence and can vary with difficulty and build.

What it attacks
The group heads toward the heat-producing object rather than choosing an arbitrary player location. A workstation, forge or similar source can therefore become the center of the defense. Protect the object and the approach routes around it, not only the point where you first see zombies.
When it does not occur
Community references state that pitstop hordes do not occur during a blood moon. That restriction does not make a blood moon safe: the blood-moon horde is a separate scheduled event with its own rules.
Heat, wandering hordes and Alpha 21 reports
Third-party Alpha 21 changelog compilations mention improvements to AI finding screamer spawn positions and to blood-moon, screamer and wandering AI finding spawn locations. Those compilations also report that wandering hordes no longer occur immediately before a blood moon begins. They were not checked against official patch notes, so use them as leads about behavior in that build, not as authoritative patch documentation.
Because spawn-finding logic is version-sensitive, an old base-defense video can mislead you even when its broad heat explanation is still useful. Re-test after a major Alpha update, especially if scouts begin appearing from unusual directions or events stop targeting the expected object.

Why reports about screamers disagree
Older forum discussions disagree about whether a screamer must see a player before its horde behavior activates, or whether the behavior can continue after the screamer dies unseen. Those threads are not a reliable way to establish current rules. The safest play is to treat an approaching screamer as dangerous before it has line of sight and to kill it promptly rather than testing the edge case during a base defense.

Similarly, community tables often combine different Alpha versions, difficulty settings and modded worlds. A result that appears contradictory may reflect a changed build rather than a broken save.
Vanilla mechanics versus mods
| Feature | Status | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| Heat generated by activity and scout behavior | Vanilla concept, version-dependent details | Part of the game’s normal heat-and-screamer system. |
| Feral scouts lasting about twice as long as regular scouts | Modded | Added by the “Improved Hordes” CurseForge mod; not a vanilla patch feature. |
| Workstations and player-placed flickering lights producing only 10% of original heat | Modded | Added by a Nexus modification; do not use it to explain an unmodified game. |
Disable mods before comparing your observations with a vanilla guide. A mod can change heat generation, scout duration, spawn composition or all three.

- Read the debug heat value before and after the action.
- Stop all activity and record the value at regular intervals to see whether it falls.
- Repeat the same trial several times. If results differ, record the range and conditions rather than selecting the most convenient result.
- Test a separate workstation or campfire session, because object heat may not equal weapon or mining heat.
- Document the Alpha number, platform, difficulty, server settings and mods with every result.
This method can reveal how your build behaves without turning an unverified community claim into a universal rule.
Troubleshooting common heatmap surprises
“A screamer arrived while I was not shooting.”
Firing is only one source. A forge, campfire, workstation, mining session, building activity or dismantling can leave the chunk hot. Stop activity, inspect the perimeter and allow time for decay.

“I killed the screamer, but zombies kept coming.”
Summoned zombies may already be in the world when the screamer dies. Clear the existing group and check for another scout; do not assume that killing one screamer instantly removes every spawned enemy.
“The attack ignored me and went for my forge.”
That matches the reported behavior of a screamer that never obtains line of sight and of pitstop hordes that target the heat-producing object. Defend the object and its access routes.

Heat values, decay and AI spawn-finding are version-dependent. Record the new Alpha build and repeat a controlled test rather than relying on an older table.
“A guide says feral scouts are vanilla.”
Check the mod list. Feral scouts described as lasting about twice as long come from the “Improved Hordes” mod, not the vanilla patch history.
Quick Recap
What to remember
- Heat belongs to a chunk and rises from several kinds of player activity.
- Idling allows heat to fade, but no confirmed universal decay timer is available.
- Screamers scout toward heat, scream after spotting a player and can bring a larger group if left alive.
- A screamer can still move toward a forge or campfire when it never sees a player.
- Pitstop hordes are linked to repeated heatmap resets, scale in difficulty and target the heat source; community descriptions exclude them during blood moons.
- Exact heat values, decay rates and edge-case spotting rules remain unverified and may change between Alpha builds.
- Feral scouts and major heat reductions for workstations or flickering lights are mod features, not vanilla mechanics.
