The safest opening in 7 Days to Die is simple: make a weapon and bedroll immediately, exploit the brief no-zombie window to gather and scout, complete the tutorial for four Skill Points and a trader marker, then secure food, water, shelter and ammunition before the first Blood Moon on day seven. Do not assume an older guide still matches your build: inventory, loot and water rules have changed between versions.

Check your version before following a guide

Version matters more than most beginner advice suggests. A third-party report says stable V3.3.0 released on October 5, 2026, adding a “Bigger Backpack” system with an 8×6 inventory grid. The same report says experimental V3.3.0 increased inventory from 48 to 96 slots, but that experimental figure has lower confidence and may not describe your stable game. Older wiki pages still list V3.2.0 or V3.0, and guides written for the 1.0 launch or the 2.0 loot system can conflict with V3.3.

Before you commit to a water, inventory or loot strategy, read the in-game version number and the latest official changelog from The Fun Pimps on the Steam news feed for app 251570. The current build was not officially confirmed in the available material, so treat V3.3.0 as a reported version rather than a guarantee for every platform or server.

Build or source context What a beginner should know Confidence or limitation
Reported stable V3.3.0, October 5, 2026 “Bigger Backpack” and an 8×6 inventory grid are reported. Medium confidence; verify in your game.
Reported V3.3.0 EXP, September 24, 2026 Inventory reportedly rose from 48 to 96 slots. Low-medium confidence; experimental values may not ship.
Older 1.0 and 2.0 guides Useful for broad survival principles, but loot and item rules may differ. Do not treat old water or inventory instructions as current.

Your first 15 minutes: a reliable opening sequence

1. Collect the minimum crafting bundle

Pick up small stones, punch trees and bushes for wood, and gather plant fibers from grass. A practical starting target is at least five small stones plus a small amount of wood and plant fibers. Open the inventory and crafting menu with Tab if you use the default PC controls. Do not spend the opening minutes wandering empty-handed: every early action should create tools, a respawn point or information about your surroundings.

  • Craft – Handcraft and repair weapons, clothes, armour, tools, vehicles, with hundreds of recipes and schematics.
  • Build – Design your fort with traps, electricity, auto turrets, and gadgets to survive in a fully destructible and mouldable world.
  • Cooperate or Compete – Work together to build settlements or against each other in a wasteland where zombies and outlaws rule the land.
  • Farm or Hunt – Plant gardens for sustainable resources or head out to the wilderness and hunt over a dozen unique animals.

2. Craft a basic weapon before exploring

Your first weapon is more important than an attractive location. Make the simplest available melee weapon or bow as soon as the recipe and materials allow. A weapon lets you clear a room, defend yourself while gathering and finish the tutorial safely. Carry a backup melee option when possible; durability loss can turn a routine search into an emergency retreat.

3. Place a bedroll immediately

A bedroll becomes your respawn point and is crafted from plant fibers gathered from foliage. Place it before traveling away from spawn. If you have not established a base, keep the bedroll with you and deploy it again when you relocate. A bedroll does not make an area safe, but it prevents a death far from spawn from sending you back to an unknown map position.

4. Exploit the initial no-zombie window

Reports describe a limited period after your first spawn in which zombies do not spawn around you, both in single-player and on a server. Use that window to identify nearby roads, buildings, water-related resources, terrain exits and a potential temporary shelter. Gather basic materials and loot close to your intended route while the area is quiet. It is a scouting advantage, not permission to run deep into a city: the protection is temporary, and noise or distance can still create danger once normal spawning begins.

Finish the tutorial before you roam

The tutorial quests are an efficient first objective rather than optional flavor. Completing the early tasks for a bedroll, clothing and stone tools rewards four free Skill Points and marks your nearest trader on the map. Those points are especially valuable before you understand which attributes fit your preferred weapons.

  1. Craft and place the requested bedroll.
  2. Make the required clothing so exposure and basic protection are handled.
  3. Craft the stone tools and finish the associated tutorial steps.
  4. Open the map, note the trader marker, and plan a route that returns before night.

Visit the trader early. Several beginner guides frame days one through six as preparation for the day-seven horde, and the trader provides a stable landmark for that preparation. Fetch quests are a good first quest type because they reveal nearby points of interest while awarding experience, Dukes and a useful item. A fetch marker can also lead to a real zombie nest rather than an empty container, so clear the building methodically and leave if your health, stamina or weapon durability is failing.

Choose a temporary shelter instead of a day-one construction project

Use a low-tier point of interest first

Do not assume you need a complete custom house on day one. A 2026 beginner guide recommends clearing a small, low-tier point of interest (POI) and using it as temporary shelter. This approach saves building materials for tools, repairs and the first horde preparation. Search the rooms, remove nearby threats, block obvious entrances and keep an escape route rather than sealing yourself into an unfamiliar structure.

When building from scratch makes sense

Other guidance favors establishing a base early, so the choice is situational. Build sooner if the nearby POIs are exposed, your group needs storage and crafting space, or you have already found a defensible location. Build near the trader you intend to use and, if possible, near a water source. A temporary POI is preferable when you are still learning the map; a purpose-built base becomes worthwhile once you know where you will spend the next several days.

  • Temporary POI: fastest protection and least material investment; inspect it carefully because hidden zombies and weak walls remain risks.
  • Early custom base: more control over storage, workstations and escape paths; costs time and resources that could otherwise improve weapons and supplies.
  • Location priority: favor a trader route, practical access to water-related resources and a retreat path over visual appeal.

Spend early Skill Points for carrying capacity, movement and a coherent weapon plan

There is no universally correct first build, but scattered points are harder to recover from than a focused plan. Strength-oriented play is commonly recommended for beginners. One guide specifically suggests Pack Mule so you can carry more while looting. Early Strength options listed in the same guidance include Miner 69’er for resource collection and block destruction, Mother Lode for gathering resources, and Pummel Pete for melee knockdown.

Parkour is another practical early recommendation: it reduces fall damage and refreshes stamina faster. That helps with rooftop routes, emergency escapes and repeated jumps while clearing buildings. Pick perks that support what you actually use—melee, bows, mining or hauling—rather than buying one point in every attribute.

Early priority Why it helps during week one What to watch for
Pack Mule More carrying capacity lets a looting run produce useful materials instead of forced discards. Do not let extra space tempt you into staying out after dark.
Miner 69’er Supports resource gathering and block destruction for tools and shelter work. Mining noise and stamina use can create danger if done near zombies.
Mother Lode Improves the value of gathering trips when materials are your bottleneck. It is less urgent than survival tools if you still lack a weapon or bedroll.
Pummel Pete Strengthens melee knockdown potential and reduces reliance on ammunition. Requires disciplined spacing; do not fight surrounded enemies in a tight room.
Parkour Reduces fall damage and improves stamina recovery for movement and escapes. It does not replace a safe route or make high falls harmless.

Manage food and water under uncertain current rules

Water advice is version-sensitive. A 2026 guide warns that murky water may no longer be boilable in a plain tin can and recommends starting a Dew Collector early. That change was not independently verified, so check your current recipe list and item descriptions rather than relying on an older “collect murky water, boil it” routine. If the Dew Collector recipe is available in your build, make it early enough that production begins before your first long looting day.

Keep food and drink on a predictable routine: carry an emergency portion, drink before a dangerous run, and do not leave your shelter with a nearly empty stamina or hydration reserve. Store surplus supplies at your temporary base and note where additional resources can be found. If a recipe, container or purification method shown in an older guide is absent from your crafting menu, treat the menu as authoritative for your build.

Fight quietly while you loot and save guns for the horde

Use melee and bows for ordinary buildings

Ammo is a strategic resource during the first week. Guidance for beginners recommends melee weapons or a bow while looting and reserving firearms for the first horde night. This trade-off keeps routine kills inexpensive and preserves a reliable answer for a larger attack. Repair before entering a building, carry enough stamina-restoring food or drink, and avoid starting a fight you cannot finish before your escape route closes.

Apply stealth fundamentals

  • Crouch when approaching a room or sleeping zombie.
  • Use a bow or another quiet weapon for the opening hit.
  • Avoid noisy trash, broken glass and unnecessary destruction while enemies may be nearby.
  • Attack sleeping zombies before they wake, then reposition rather than standing in a doorway.
  • Use sound and line of sight as information: if you cannot identify the threat, do not sprint deeper into the POI.

At night, zombies are reported to be faster, more aggressive and able to spot players from farther away. A short, planned night trip is different from wandering through an unfamiliar town after dark. Return to shelter before visibility and detection turn a loot run into a chase.

Prepare deliberately for the first Blood Moon on day seven

Treat the first six days as a preparation window. By the end of day six, you should know where you will stand, where you will retreat, and which weapon you will use when ordinary melee is no longer enough. Save ammunition, repair materials, healing items, food and water instead of converting every resource into immediate loot value.

A practical day-by-day plan

Time Primary objectives
Day 1 Gather stones, wood and plant fibers; craft a weapon and bedroll; complete tutorial steps; scout nearby POIs and the trader.
Days 2–3 Clear low-tier buildings, run a manageable fetch quest, collect clothing and tools, and establish temporary storage and shelter.
Days 4–5 Improve the chosen weapon, gather building and repair materials, secure food and water production, and learn the routes around the trader.
Day 6 Stop taking unnecessary risks; stock ammunition and medical supplies, repair equipment, and test your escape path and defensive position.
Day 7 Return early, eat and drink, organize the hotbar, and be in your prepared position before the Blood Moon begins.

About digging to bedrock

One guide suggests digging down to bedrock within the first seven days before the first Blood Moon. That recommendation has low confidence and its applicability to the current version is unverified. Do not undertake a deep excavation merely because an older checklist says so. If you choose an underground defense, confirm that your build’s enemy pathing and structural rules support it, reinforce the access point, and keep a second way out. A shallow, tested defensive position is safer than an ambitious shaft you cannot finish or escape.

Common first-week mistakes and the correction

  • Traveling before making a bedroll: craft and place one before leaving the spawn area.
  • Spending the opening window on sightseeing: gather materials, scout a shelter and identify the trader while nearby spawning is suppressed.
  • Building a large house immediately: clear a small POI first unless your location and group clearly justify construction.
  • Using guns for every zombie: rely on melee or a bow for routine looting and preserve ammunition for the horde.
  • Following a water recipe from an old video: check the current crafting menu; the murky-water rule may have changed.
  • Entering a quest POI without an exit: fetch quests can contain real zombie nests, so clear slowly and keep a retreat route.
  • Ignoring nightfall: return before darkness because detection, speed and aggression increase at night.
  • Putting points everywhere: choose a coherent early plan such as carrying capacity plus melee, resource gathering or mobility.

A compact pre-departure checklist

  • Weapon equipped and a repair option available.
  • Bedroll placed at the current operating area.
  • Food, water and a basic medical item carried.
  • Enough inventory space for the intended loot run.
  • Map route marked, with the trader and shelter location known.
  • Quiet weapon ready for sleeping or unaware zombies.
  • Escape route identified before entering a POI.
  • Return time chosen so you are not crossing open ground after dark.

These priorities remain useful across solo and server play, but the exact recipes, inventory size and water mechanics depend on the build running on your game or server. Recheck patch notes whenever a familiar item, perk or crafting step behaves differently.
