AI has changed the tools available to people learning to code, but it has not made programming fundamentals obsolete. In Stack Overflow’s 2025 developer survey, 69% of respondents said they had spent time in the prior year learning coding techniques or a programming language, and nearly 68% used technical documentation as a learning resource. Those figures describe survey respondents, not all learners, and they do not show which method works best.

What has actually changed about learning to code?

Learners can now ask AI tools to explain unfamiliar code, suggest examples, or provide feedback while they work. That adds a conversational aid to a learning process that still includes reading, writing, testing, and revising code. The 2025 Stack Overflow survey found that more than 52% of respondents learning to code for AI used AI-powered tools and applications; it does not establish that AI is effective for every learner or task. Stack Overflow’s 2025 survey reports what respondents said about their learning and tools.

What has not been established is that learners should replace fundamentals with prompt-writing or rely on AI to produce finished programs. Syntax, debugging, and basic programming concepts help learners judge whether a suggested solution makes sense. AI can make explanations and examples easier to request; it cannot remove the need to understand and verify the code being learned.

Why documentation and fundamentals still matter

Nearly 68% of Stack Overflow’s 2025 survey respondents used technical documentation to learn in the prior year. Documentation gives learners a way to check how a language, library, or tool is meant to work, rather than relying only on a generated explanation. Learning coding techniques or languages remains common: 69% of respondents spent time on it during the prior year. Neither figure isolates beginners or compares learning outcomes.

Fundamentals also give learners a basis for checking AI-generated code. A learner who can trace how values move through a function, identify a likely error, and run a test is better equipped to evaluate a suggestion than one who accepts output without inspection. This is practical guidance, not a proven ranking of learning methods.

Where AI can help—and where to keep a human check

A November 2025 survey of research on large language model applications in programming education examines uses including code feedback, assessment, and modeling learner knowledge. Its authors emphasize human oversight, scaffolding, and evaluation, noting that “Fully automated approaches are often constrained in capturing the pedagogical nuances of programming education.” The review supports treating AI as an aid within a learning process, not as a substitute for instruction or for checking understanding. The Association for Computational Linguistics publishes the survey.

  • Seek feedback with structure: When possible, pair automated comments with exercises, clear goals, or an educator who can catch misunderstandings.

These practices follow the education survey’s emphasis on scaffolding and evaluation; the survey does not test this exact checklist as an intervention.

What working developers’ AI use tells learners

A JetBrains Research study published in February 2025 collected opinions from 481 programmers about five broad activities: implementing features, writing tests, bug triage, refactoring, and producing natural-language artifacts. It reports uses such as generating tests and docstrings, alongside limits including trust concerns, company policies, and missing project context. The study is about working programmers’ software-development tasks, not novice learning outcomes, so it should not be read as proof of what beginners should do. JetBrains Research describes the study and its findings.

The project-context issue is especially relevant when judging a generated suggestion: a tool may not know the full requirements, conventions, or surrounding code. A plausible-looking answer therefore still needs to be checked against the actual project, tests, and documentation.

A practical way to learn with AI available

  1. Start with a goal you can verify. Choose a small task, such as writing a function that transforms a known input into a specified output.
  2. Attempt it yourself first. Write down what you expect the code to do and where you are uncertain.
  3. Use AI for a focused question. Ask for an explanation, a hint, or feedback on a specific issue rather than an unexplained complete solution.
  4. Trace and test the result. Run the code, inspect its behavior, and check cases beyond the simplest example.
  5. Explain the final version. If you cannot describe why it works or how you would find a failure, revisit the relevant concept and documentation.

This workflow is a reasoned approach to using a new tool while preserving opportunities to practice; the cited surveys do not establish it as a uniquely effective curriculum.

What the headline claim gets right—and overstates

A DEV Community article by Taki, whose page says its content was written by Gemini, argues that learning should shift from memorizing syntax toward specifications, problem decomposition, review, and AI-assisted workflows. That is an argument about priorities, not a settled research consensus. The article appears on DEV Community.

It is reasonable to say that the available learning tools and workflows have changed. The evidence cited here does not show that coding knowledge has been displaced, that AI makes programming effortless, or that a particular set of skills should replace fundamentals. The strongest takeaway is narrower: learners have another source of explanation and feedback, while documentation, practice, evaluation, and human judgment remain important.
