There are plenty of legitimate ways to stream movies and TV shows in the U.S., but “free” does not always mean the same thing. Some services are ad-supported, some require a library card, and others combine included titles with rentals, purchases, or premium channel add-ons.
The 60 services below were checked against official service pages on August 8, 2026. Catalogs, names, supported devices, and availability can change by country, ZIP code, subscription tier, and licensing agreement.
How to choose a legal streaming website
Use the category that matches what you want to do:
- Subscription services: Pay monthly or annually for an included catalog.
- Free, ad-supported services: Watch without a subscription, usually with commercial breaks.
- Library services: Stream with a participating library card or university account.
- Rental and purchase services: Pay for an individual movie or season instead of maintaining another subscription.
- Discovery services: Find where a particular title is legally available.
Before paying, search for a specific movie or episode. A service may advertise a large catalog while placing many popular titles behind a separate rental fee, channel add-on, or higher plan.
Subscription streaming services
These services primarily offer on-demand programming through a paid plan. Some also include live channels, sports, or a mixture of included and separately paid content.

Library, rental, purchase, and discovery services
These options are useful when you need one specific movie, want independent films, or have access to a public library. They do not all work like conventional subscription streamers.

| # | Website | How it works | Best use |
|---|---|---|---|
| 56 | Kanopy | Sign in through a participating library or university | Films, documentaries, educational videos, and Kanopy Kids. In Kanopy search, use the “0 tickets” filter to find titles that do not consume monthly tickets; “unlimited viewing” titles also do not use tickets. |
| 57 | Hoopla | Borrow digital video with a participating library card | Movies, TV, documentaries, music, ebooks, and audiobooks. Monthly borrowing limits and availability are set by each library. |
| 58 | JustWatch | Searches legal providers rather than hosting the video | Open Movies or TV Shows, choose Filters, and use the Price filter to separate subscription, free, rental, and purchase options. Verify time-sensitive results with the provider. |
| 59 | Google TV | Searches, organizes, rents, and sells video from participating providers | Finding and watching a particular movie or show. Purchase rights and availability vary by title and country. |
| 60 | Vimeo On Demand | Rent or purchase creator-distributed video | Independent films, documentaries, specials, and other creator-released productions. |
How to verify that a movie is actually free
- Search the exact title on JustWatch. Select the U.S. region, then open Filters → Price.
- Check the result label. “Free” may mean ad-supported, while “Rent” and “Buy” are one-time transactions. A service logo alone does not prove that the title is included.
- Open the provider’s page. Rights can change between a discovery listing and playback.
- Look for an account, provider, or add-on requirement. Network websites frequently show locked episodes even when clips or selected episodes are free.
- Check the title inside the app or website. Prime Video, YouTube, Fandango at Home, Google TV, Apple TV, and Plex can display free, included, rental, purchase, and add-on content in the same interface.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Do not treat Freevee as a separate current service without checking first. Amazon’s free ad-supported programming is increasingly presented through Prime Video and its free-title areas rather than a standalone Freevee destination.
- Do not assume a website’s entire catalog is free. A free service may have paid rentals, or a subscription service may show titles that require an upgrade.
- Do not assume library access is universal. Kanopy and Hoopla depend on your library’s participation, your card eligibility, and local borrowing limits.
- Do not use copied “free movie” domains as proof of legality. Avoid mirror sites, torrent indexes, unauthorized IPTV services, and domains that cannot identify a recognizable rights-holder or official business.
- Remember that catalogs are temporary. A movie can disappear when a license expires, and availability may differ by state, ZIP code, country, device, or plan.
FAQ
What is the best legal website to watch movies for free?
Tubi, Pluto TV, The Roku Channel, Xumo Play, Plex, and Sling Freestream are strong starting points for free, ad-supported movies and TV. Kanopy and Hoopla can be better choices if your library participates. The exact best option depends on the movie you want.
Is Prime Video free with Amazon Prime?
No. Prime Video has titles included with a Prime subscription, but its interface also lists rentals, purchases, channel add-ons, and free ad-supported titles. Check the title’s playback label before starting it.
