Windows 11’s AI features are spread across system tools, the Copilot app, and apps such as Paint—not every PC has the same set. Recall, Click to Do, and several creative and call features require a Copilot+ PC; the Copilot app and some newer Windows Search and Settings capabilities have different access rules. Here’s what each feature does, where to find it, and what to check before using it.

What AI features are in Windows 11?

“Windows AI” is not a single feature. It can mean an AI capability built into Windows, a feature inside an app such as Paint, or the Copilot app installed on Windows. Availability depends on the device’s hardware, app version, language, market, and rollout—not simply on whether a PC runs Windows 11.

Feature What it helps you do Hardware or access notes
Recall Search an opt-in history of screen snapshots Copilot+ PC; requires setup and minimum specifications
Click to Do Take actions on detected screen text or images Copilot+ PC; some text actions have language and selection requirements
Windows Search and Settings agent Find files or settings using natural-language requests 2025 Update documentation describes these capabilities for Copilot+ PCs; rollout, language, and market can affect access
Paint AI tools Generate or edit artwork Copilot+ PC and updated Paint; generative fill is limited to Snapdragon-powered Copilot+ PCs
Windows Studio Effects Adjust camera and microphone effects Depends on NPU performance and device; some effects are Snapdragon-specific
Copilot app Ask questions and get help with open content, files, screenshots, and settings App access and features vary; a personal Microsoft account unlocks additional features

Microsoft describes Copilot+ PCs as Windows 11 devices with an NPU capable of more than 40 trillion operations per second (TOPS). That hardware class is distinct from a regular Windows 11 PC, and some features have further processor-specific limits. See Microsoft’s Copilot+ PC overview for the feature families and device distinction.

How do I use Recall in Windows 11?

Recall lets you search through snapshots of screen activity to find something you previously saw, browse a timeline, and return to the original item. It is optional: snapshots are saved only if you choose to enable saving. Microsoft says snapshots and related context are stored in encrypted local storage, access uses Windows Hello authentication, and Recall does not record audio or save continuous video. Read Microsoft’s Recall documentation before enabling a screen-history feature.

Check the stated requirements

Microsoft’s support page lists a 40 TOPS NPU, 16 GB RAM, 256 GB storage capacity, and at least 50 GB of free storage as minimums to enable Recall. Automatic snapshot saving pauses if available storage falls below 25 GB. These are requirements listed on Microsoft’s page; confirm support and configuration for your particular device.

Control what Recall saves

Recall provides controls to pause or disable snapshot saving, filter apps and websites, and delete snapshots. Use these controls if you want to exclude sensitive work or stop collecting screen history; filtering is especially relevant when a particular app or site should not appear in snapshots.

Can Windows AI see what’s on my screen?

Some Windows AI features work with screen content, but their behavior and data handling differ. Recall saves snapshots only when enabled. Click to Do analyzes content after you activate it. The Copilot app can also help with open browser windows or apps, screenshots, and supported files. Check which feature you are using and what action you choose rather than assuming all Windows AI shares the same screen data.

Use Click to Do for a selected item

Click to Do recognizes text and images on the current screen or in a Recall snapshot, then offers actions such as copying text, opening a website, searching the web, summarizing or rewriting selected text, or sending an image to Paint for editing. Microsoft says the initial analysis happens locally after activation. If you choose an action that requires an online service, the selected content is sent to that service. Some intelligent text actions require English as the default language and a selection of at least 10 words. Availability and integrations can vary. Details are in Microsoft’s Click to Do guide.

How can I use AI to find a file or setting?

Microsoft’s Windows 11 2025 Update documentation describes improved Windows Search on Copilot+ PCs, including semantic indexing that can match natural-language requests such as “change my theme.” Search results can include local and cloud-stored photos and files, and may show matches from file contents. The same update describes a Copilot-powered Settings agent that can help find and change settings from a natural-language request.

At the time described in Microsoft’s Windows 11 update information, the Settings agent worked only when English was the primary display language. Microsoft cautions that these features vary by device and market and may continue rolling out, so an eligible PC may not yet show every capability.

What can Paint’s AI tools do?

On a Copilot+ PC with an updated Paint app, Microsoft lists several AI-assisted creative tools:

  • Cocreator: combines a text prompt with your drawing to generate artwork.
  • Generative fill: adds objects to a selected area; Microsoft limits this feature to Snapdragon-powered Copilot+ PCs.
  • Sticker generation: creates stickers from a prompt.
  • Object Select: helps select objects in an image.

Microsoft says Paint image generation happens locally, while Azure services provide online safety filtering. Use requires a Microsoft account and an internet connection for those safety services. Feature access also requires an updated Paint app. See Microsoft’s Paint Cocreator guidance for the applicable details.

How can Windows improve a video call?

Windows Studio Effects offers camera and audio options that may include automatic framing, eye contact, background blur, portrait lighting, creative filters, and Voice Focus. Which effects appear depends on the PC’s hardware and NPU performance. Microsoft’s Studio Effects documentation identifies portrait lighting, teleprompter eye contact, and creative filters as limited to Snapdragon Copilot+ PCs. Effects can also affect performance and battery life on some devices.

What can Copilot do on a Windows PC?

The Copilot app is a separate experience from Windows-integrated features such as Recall or Click to Do. Microsoft’s Windows Copilot app documentation describes Copilot Vision for help with open browser windows or apps, questions about supported files, screenshot questions, viewing web content alongside a conversation, and guidance to Windows Settings. If the app is not installed, Microsoft says it can be installed from the Microsoft Store.

Signing in with a personal Microsoft account provides features including chat history, image creation, longer conversations, and voice interactions. Do not assume those account-dependent capabilities are available in the same way without signing in with a personal account. See Microsoft’s Copilot on Windows information.

Do I need a Copilot+ PC to use Windows AI?

No. The Copilot app and other broadly available Windows functions do not make a Copilot+ PC a requirement for every kind of AI assistance. A Copilot+ PC is relevant if you specifically want device-dependent features such as Recall, Click to Do, the described semantic Windows Search capabilities, or the Copilot+ Paint tools. Some features then impose additional conditions, such as a particular processor, an updated app, a language setting, an account, or an internet connection. Before choosing a device, verify its exact configuration and the availability of the feature you want.
