The message “Unable to Verify Account Name or Password” does not always mean the password is wrong. It can also appear when a mail app is using an old saved password, a stale sign-in token, the wrong account type, or settings that AOL no longer accepts.
Start by checking whether you can sign in through AOL Mail in a browser. That single test tells you where to concentrate: the account itself, or the mail app on the device.
Menu names and AOL security options can change by device and account. Where a step refers to AOL’s current server values or security controls, use the values shown in AOL’s own help or account pages rather than copying old settings from a random guide.

1. Test the account in a browser and re-enter the address carefully
Open a private or incognito browser window and sign in to AOL Mail. Do not rely on a password manager’s autofill for this test.

- Open a private window: Ctrl+Shift+N in Chrome or Edge, or Ctrl+Shift+P in Firefox.
- Type your complete AOL email address manually.
- Type the password manually, checking uppercase letters, spaces, and characters that look alike.
- If the account works in the browser, the password is probably valid and the problem is local to the mail app.
Common sources of an apparent password error include a password manager filling an old password, a keyboard set to a different language, and a mail app using an old AOL address after the account was renamed or changed.
If browser sign-in also fails, stop trying repeatedly. Multiple unsuccessful attempts can trigger an additional security check or temporary restriction. Use AOL’s account-recovery or password-reset process instead.
2. Reset the password, then replace every saved copy
If you cannot sign in on the web—or you are unsure whether the stored password is current—reset the password through AOL’s official recovery page. After the reset, changing the password in only one place is not enough.
Update or remove the old credential in each location that may be checking mail:

- a browser password manager;
- another phone, tablet, or computer still connected to the account.
A useful test is to enter the new password manually once rather than pasting it. Pasting can bring along an invisible trailing space.
On Windows, an old entry may be stored in Control Panel → Credential Manager → Windows Credentials. Delete only the credential that clearly belongs to the AOL account, then reopen the mail program and sign in again. Do not delete unrelated credentials.
3. Use an app password when a mail program rejects the normal password
A particularly common pattern is: webmail works, but Outlook, Apple Mail, Thunderbird, or a phone’s built-in Mail app repeatedly reports an invalid password. In that situation, the mail program may need an app password rather than the ordinary AOL account password.

- Sign in to your AOL account through a browser.
- Open the account’s security or sign-in settings.
- Look for an option related to app passwords, third-party mail apps, or generating an application password.
- Create a password for the mail program if AOL offers that option.
- Enter the generated value into the mail app’s password field.
Use the generated value exactly as displayed. Some apps show one continuous string even if the page visually separates it into groups. Do not add spaces unless the app specifically requires them.
If the account has no app-password option, do not guess at a workaround. Check AOL’s current help for the account’s supported sign-in method. An app password created for one service may also be revoked later, so generate a new one if the old one has been deleted or exposed.
4. Check the account type and mail-server settings
A mail app can produce a password error when its incoming or outgoing server configuration is wrong. The app may be connecting to the wrong host, using an unsupported port, or attempting an insecure connection. Some programs report all of these failures as an authentication problem.
Open the account’s detailed settings and check all of the following:
Rank #4
- Account type: confirm whether the account is configured as IMAP or POP. Use the type you actually intend to use; do not switch casually, because POP and IMAP handle downloaded mail differently.
- Username: use the full AOL email address if AOL’s current instructions require it, not merely the text before the
@symbol. - Password: use the current account password or the generated app password where required.
- Encryption: use SSL/TLS or the secure option specified by AOL. Avoid “none” or unencrypted authentication.
- Outgoing authentication: enable the option that makes the outgoing server authenticate with the account, when AOL’s instructions call for it.
- Server names and ports: compare them with AOL’s current official documentation instead of relying on an old setup article.
Do not change just the incoming settings. Sending mail uses a separate outgoing-server profile, and a bad SMTP setting can cause the same account-verification message after incoming mail has already been accepted.
5. Remove the account from the app and add it again
If the browser login works and the settings look correct, the app may have a corrupt account record or an expired authentication token. Removing and re-adding the account creates a clean profile.
Before removing it, check whether the app contains locally stored messages, drafts, contacts, or calendar data. Messages already synchronized to the server should return after the account is added again, but local-only data may not.
- Write down the account address and note whether the account was using IMAP or POP.
- Back up or export any local-only mail you need to keep.
- Open the device or app’s account settings.
- Select the AOL account and choose Remove account, Delete account from this device, or the equivalent option. This removes the account from the app; it does not delete the AOL mailbox.
- Restart the app or device.
- Add the account again using the app’s AOL provider option if one is available.
- When prompted, use the current password or app password and approve any browser-based sign-in or permission screen.
Prefer the provider’s automatic setup when it is available. Manual setup is useful only when you have AOL’s current server names, ports, and encryption requirements in front of you.

6. Fix device, app, and network conditions that interrupt sign-in
Authentication can fail before the password is fully checked. Work through these quick checks:
- Correct the clock: turn on automatic date, time, and time-zone settings. On Windows, an administrator can open Command Prompt and run
w32tm /resync. A badly incorrect clock can invalidate secure connections. - Update the mail app and operating system: older clients may not support the sign-in or encryption method currently required by the provider.
- Try another network: switch from Wi-Fi to mobile data, or use a different trusted Wi-Fi connection. A workplace, school, VPN, or security filter may block mail authentication.
- Temporarily test without a VPN or filtering tool: disconnect the VPN or pause mail scanning only long enough to test, then restore protection. Do not leave security software disabled.
- Clear the app’s temporary data: on Android, the usual route is Settings → Apps → [mail app] → Storage → Clear cache. Avoid Clear data until you have confirmed that local drafts and unsynchronized mail are backed up.
- Try the vendor’s current app: if one mail client fails but browser mail and another supported app work, the original client may be obsolete or incompatible.
If the error persists on several devices, on different networks, and in browser sign-in, the issue is more likely an account-security or recovery problem than a local mail-app problem. Use AOL’s official account-help route and be ready to verify ownership.

| What happens | Most useful next action |
|---|---|
| Browser sign-in fails everywhere | Recover or reset the account password and check for an account-security prompt. |
| Browser works, but one mail app fails | Replace the saved password, then try an app password and re-add the account. |
| Receiving works, sending fails | Check the outgoing-server address, port, encryption, and SMTP authentication. |
| The error began after a password change | Remove stale credentials from every device and application. |
| The error appears only on one network | Test without the VPN, filter, or network; then check whether the network blocks mail connections. |
| The error began after an app or system update | Update the mail app again, remove and re-add the account, or use a currently supported client. |
FAQ
Why does AOL Mail work in a browser but not in Outlook or a phone app?
The browser may use a modern sign-in flow while the mail app uses stored credentials or a separate authentication method. Replace the saved password and check whether AOL requires an app password for that application.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsWill removing an AOL account from my phone delete my emails?
Removing an account from the device normally removes its local account profile, not the mailbox stored online. Protect local-only drafts and downloaded messages first, especially if the account uses POP or the app has unsynchronized data.
Should I keep trying different passwords?
No. Repeated attempts can trigger additional security checks or a temporary restriction. Test the account once in a private browser window, then use the official recovery process if the web sign-in fails.
Can an incorrect server port cause a password error?
Yes. Some mail apps use a generic verification message for connection, encryption, or authentication failures. Check the current AOL instructions for the incoming and outgoing server names, ports, and secure-connection requirements.
The Bottom Line
First separate an account problem from an app problem: test AOL Mail in a private browser window. If webmail fails, recover the account. If webmail works, replace stale saved credentials, try an AOL app password if supported, verify the current secure mail settings, and re-add the account. A correct password cannot fix a mail client that is using the wrong server, an expired token, or an unsupported sign-in method.
