These six Safari features make it easier to keep related pages together, return to sites you revisit, recover a tab you closed, and find information on a long page. The steps below apply to Safari on Mac; some keyboard shortcuts can vary with your language or keyboard layout.
1. Keep related pages together with Tab Groups
Tab Groups let you save and name collections of related tabs. Apple Support describes them as useful for keeping research, shopping, or work pages separate from everything else. Use one when you want to return to a set of pages without mixing it into another task.
- Open Safari’s sidebar using the Sidebar button.
- Choose the option to create a new Tab Group. Create an empty group, or make a group from the tabs currently open.
- Give the group a name that identifies the task, then open it from the sidebar when you want to return to those pages.
For a temporary collection of related pages, a Tab Group is the more focused choice. If you want a more persistent browsing context with separate history, cookies, favorites, and extensions, consider a profile instead; profiles do not separate every setting or type of data.

2. Pin tabs you revisit
Pin a tab for a site you regularly return to. Control-click or right-click the tab and choose Pin Tab. Safari reduces the tab to the site’s icon at the left of the tab bar, and Apple says pinned tabs reopen automatically the next time Safari launches. Pinning is a convenience for access, not a speed improvement.

3. Reopen a tab you closed by mistake
Press Shift-Command-T (⇧⌘T) to reopen the last closed tab. Press it again to work back through recently closed tabs. You can also look in Safari’s History menu for Recently Closed.

4. Use Reader for a cleaner article view
When a page supports Reader, select the Reader button in the Smart Search field or press Shift-Command-R (⇧⌘R). Reader presents the article text without elements such as ads, sidebars, and navigation. Select the button again to return to the regular page. Not every website offers Reader.

5. Save an article to Reading List
Reading List is handy for pages you intend to read later; bookmarks are better for pages you want to keep as ongoing destinations. To add the current page, press Shift-Command-D (⇧⌘D), or use the Share button and choose Add to Reading List. Open Reading List from Safari’s sidebar. Apple says saved items are available there even when you’re offline.

6. Find a word or phrase on a long page
Press Command-F (⌘F), enter a word or phrase, and use Return to move through the matches Safari highlights. If you want to search the web instead, press Command-L (⌘L) to focus the Smart Search field.

When profiles or Private Browsing are a better fit
Profiles separate some browsing data
Safari profiles, available starting with Safari 17, let you keep browsing contexts distinct. Apple says they have separate history, cookies, website data, extensions, Tab Groups, and favorites. Some information and settings remain shared, including AutoFill information, passwords, security, website, and privacy settings, so profiles are not complete isolation. Profiles can sync across devices running Safari 17 or later when those devices use the same Apple Account and Safari is enabled in iCloud.

Private Browsing is for a private session on your Mac
Apple’s Mac browsing overview says a Private Browsing window does not save history, cookies, or AutoFill information for the session. That is a bounded description of what the window does; it does not mean you are anonymous or protected from every form of tracking.

- Check Safari’s menus for the command and its current shortcut. Apple notes that shortcuts can vary with Mac language and keyboard layout; Keyboard Viewer can help identify the keys for your layout.
- For tab-selection shortcuts, Safari’s guidance describes Command-1 through Command-8 as selecting the first eight tabs and Command-9 as selecting the last tab. Another Apple settings page describes a configurable Command-1 through Command-9 option. If the behavior differs on your Mac, check Safari > Settings > Tabs.
- To see Safari’s available settings areas, open Safari > Settings. Apple’s guide includes panes such as Tabs, Privacy, Websites, Profiles, Extensions, and Advanced.
