If Wi-Fi is acting up, first check whether it affects one device or several. Then work through these six quick checks using your existing router and devices. They are troubleshooting steps to try in a few minutes—not a promise that every connection problem can be fixed that quickly.

1. Check whether one device or the whole network is affected

Try another phone, computer, or tablet on the same Wi-Fi. If only one device has trouble, the issue may be specific to that device; if several do, look at the router or broadband connection. Ofcom’s guide suggests starting with the question, “My Wi-Fi is not working.” A Wi-Fi speed test on one device alone does not establish that the broadband line is at fault.

2. Restart the router

  1. Switch the router off.
  2. Wait about 30 seconds, then turn it back on.
  3. Give the connection time to return before checking whether the problem has changed.

Ofcom recommends this simple restart, but it is not a guaranteed fix. Ofcom’s broadband and Wi-Fi guidance also advises checking for wider service problems if trouble persists.

3. Put the router in a clearer, more central spot

Place the router in the open, elevated where practical, and closer to the middle of the area where you use Wi-Fi. Walls and other obstacles between the router and a device can weaken the connection. Ofcom puts it plainly: “Wi-Fi works best when there are fewer obstacles and walls between your router and your device, so try to keep the path between them as clear as possible.” Avoid tucking the router behind furniture or placing it beside a fish tank or radiator. See Ofcom’s advice on improving Wi-Fi.

TP-Link AX1800 WiFi 6 Router (Archer AX21 V5)
  • DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
  • AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
  • CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
  • EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
  • OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.

4. Move the router away from possible interference

Nearby electronics can interfere with Wi-Fi. Ofcom lists microwaves, baby monitors, cordless phones, halogen lamps, dimmer switches, and speakers as possible sources. Move the router or the suspected device, changing one thing at a time, then check whether the connection improves.

5. Try another Wi-Fi band your device supports

If your router shows separate network names for 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz, connect the affected device to the other band and compare. The device must support that band; not every device supports every Wi-Fi option. Which works better depends on the room and setup, so test where you actually use the connection rather than assuming one band is always faster or better. Microsoft’s Wi-Fi connection guidance explains that band availability and device support matter.

TP-Link AC1200 WiFi Router Dual Band Wireless Internet Router (Archer A54)
  • Dual-band Wi-Fi with 5 GHz speeds up to 867 Mbps and 2.4 GHz speeds up to 300 Mbps, delivering 1200 Mbps of total bandwidth¹. Dual-band routers do not support 6 GHz. Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
  • Covers up to 1,000 sq. ft. with four external antennas for stable wireless connections and optimal coverage.
  • Supports IGMP Proxy/Snooping, Bridge and Tag VLAN to optimize IPTV streaming
  • Access Point Mode - Supports AP Mode to transform your wired connection into wireless network, an ideal wireless router for home
  • Advanced Security with WPA3 - The latest Wi-Fi security protocol, WPA3, brings new capabilities to improve cybersecurity in personal networks

6. Check channel congestion before changing a channel

First run a speed or performance check in the place where the connection is poor. If practical, use a Wi-Fi analyzer to inspect nearby networks and possible channel congestion. Microsoft recommends checking performance and congestion before selecting a channel. Apple recommends leaving channel selection on automatic when the router supports it; for 2.4 GHz, Apple’s guidance recommends a 20 MHz channel width to help avoid performance and reliability issues near other networks and 2.4 GHz devices. Router controls differ, so consult the instructions for your model before making a manual change. Use these checks to narrow down the cause

Pause heavy use and disconnect idle devices

Temporarily pause large downloads or streams and disconnect devices that are not in use. Check whether the affected connection changes. This is a diagnostic test, not proof that every connected device is using significant bandwidth. Ofcom recommends checking devices using the connection in its broadband and Wi-Fi help.

  • COVERAGE IN EVERY ROOM: Covers up to 1,500 sq. ft. for up to 20 connected devices. Walls, floors, and interference can reduce range. Larger or multi-story homes may benefit from a NETGEAR Orbi mesh WiFi system.

Compare Wi-Fi with a wired connection, if possible

A wired test can help distinguish a wireless coverage problem from a broader connection issue. Ofcom says wired connections are usually faster and more reliable; use a cable capable of handling your broadband speed. This optional comparison does not improve Wi-Fi coverage or repair a wireless dead spot. See Ofcom’s Wi-Fi guidance.

Check powered equipment and contact your provider when needed

Confirm that the router and any relevant mesh unit, booster, or fibre equipment are powered. If multiple devices remain affected or there are signs of a broader broadband fault, contact your provider rather than repeatedly changing router settings.
