Several Linux distributions borrow familiar Windows desktop conventions, from a bottom taskbar and app launcher to a Windows XP-inspired theme. The resemblance can make the first steps feel more familiar, but it does not make Windows applications or every device compatible. Here are six options, from conventional desktops to deliberate visual imitations.
Six Linux distributions with familiar Windows patterns
The descriptions below are based on Bobby Jack’s How-To Geek article, syndicated by Yahoo Tech on August 21, 2026. The article treats these as different degrees of resemblance, not interchangeable Windows replacements. Read the article on Yahoo Tech.
Linux Mint: a familiar conventional desktop
Linux Mint’s default Cinnamon desktop uses a bottom panel, a Start-style launcher, a system tray, and a searchable menu with an alphabetical app list and pinned favorites. Those everyday conventions may be comfortable if you are used to Windows, without making the desktop a literal copy. The article presents Mint as approachable for newcomers.
Kubuntu: familiar workflow with extensive customization
Kubuntu is an Ubuntu variant that uses KDE Plasma rather than Ubuntu’s default GNOME Shell. Its bottom panel, application launcher, task manager, and system tray echo a conventional Windows workflow. Plasma also offers substantial customization, so Kubuntu suits users who want to adjust the desktop rather than simply accept a fixed look.

Winux: the closest visual imitation in this group
The project has used the names Linuxfx, Wubuntu, and Winux. The article describes Winux as the most literal visual imitation among these six, with Windows-like themes, icons, and wallpaper, plus a preconfigured Wine setup for Windows software. Wine can help run some Windows programs, but its presence is not a guarantee that a particular application will work.
Jack’s article raises concerns about the project’s naming changes and upsold proprietary add-ons. That is the author’s caution, not proof of misconduct or a security defect.

AnduinOS: a Windows 11-inspired GNOME setup
AnduinOS uses GNOME extensions and themes to approximate Windows 11, including a centered taskbar, start menu, and widgets. The article says AnduinOS 2 ships with an app store. It identifies creator Anduin Xue as a former Microsoft employee; that background does not make AnduinOS a Microsoft product or endorsement.

Zorin OS is described as a polished desktop with an installer guide for Windows apps that directs users toward native Linux versions or alternatives. How-To Geek reported that Zorin’s developers said nearly one million Windows users sought refuge in Zorin OS within a month of a release that coincided with Windows 10’s end of life. This is a developer-reported figure as relayed by the article, not an independently audited migration count.

- Live Boot: Simply plug the USB drive into your computer, select the USB drive as your boot device, and experience Linux Mint without installation. This allows you to test the OS and its features before making any changes to your system.
- Install Option: Once you've tested and decided to keep Linux Mint, you can easily install it on your computer directly from the USB drive.
- Pre-installed software like LibreOffice for office tasks, a capable web browser (Firefox), email client (Thunderbird), and multimedia tools. This minimizes the need for additional downloads, saving you time and effort.
- Resource Efficiency: Designed to run efficiently on a variety of hardware configurations. It demands fewer system resources compared to some other operating systems, making it an excellent choice for older computers or devices with limited hardware specifications.
- Compatible with PC/Laptop/Desktop brands - Dell, HP, Sony, Lenovo, Samsung, Acer, Toshiba & more. Minimum system requirements 4 GB RAM Dual-Core Processor (2 GHz) 20 GB of free disk space
Q4OS: a retro desktop for older machines
Q4OS offers a Windows XP-inspired desktop through its Trinity environment, making it the retro-oriented option in this group. How-To Geek reports support for systems with as little as 512 MB of RAM and 6 GB of storage, including 32-bit i386 processors running as slowly as 500 MHz. Treat these as specifications reported by that article, not independently verified guarantees for a particular installation.

| Distribution | What feels familiar | Distinctive emphasis |
|---|---|---|
| Linux Mint | Bottom panel, launcher, tray, searchable app menu | Conventional desktop presented as approachable for newcomers |
| Kubuntu | Bottom panel, launcher, task manager, tray | KDE Plasma customization |
| Winux | Windows-like themes, icons, and wallpaper | Closest visual imitation in the article; preconfigured Wine |
| AnduinOS | Centered taskbar, start menu, widgets | GNOME extensions and themes; app store in version 2, according to the article |
| Zorin OS | Polished desktop and Windows-app migration guidance | Points users toward Linux apps or alternatives |
| Q4OS | Windows XP-inspired Trinity desktop | Retro style and reported low hardware requirements |
Choose by what you need beyond appearance: whether you want familiar conventions or a more explicit imitation, how much desktop customization you want, whether migration guidance matters, and what hardware you have. Their visual similarity does not erase differences in Linux software availability, hardware support, or maintenance. A familiar interface is a starting point, not a compatibility promise.

Test hardware and everyday tasks before replacing Windows
A live USB or separate drive lets you screen a distribution before committing to an installation. A migration guide published by WindowsForum on August 21, 2026, and updated September 7, 2026, recommends checking common devices and tasks during the test. Read the WindowsForum migration guide.
- Create live installation media or use a separate drive, and start the Linux system without replacing your Windows installation.
- Check Wi-Fi, audio, graphics, printers, VPN access, and any peripherals you rely on.
- Test suspend and resume, then try the applications and workflows you need for work or personal use.
- If something essential fails, check the distribution’s documentation and hardware support before deciding whether to install it.
A successful live test is useful screening, not proof that every application or device will work after installation.
