If you want a free and open-source bookmark manager with a graphical interface, first decide whether you need an archive of saved pages or a way to synchronize your browser’s existing bookmarks. Linkwarden, linkding, Karakeep, Shiori, and LinkAce are web-based archive and organization tools; Floccus is different: it syncs native browser bookmarks. Most options here are self-hosted, so the software may be free while running and maintaining it still takes effort.
How to choose a bookmark manager
These projects do not all solve the same problem. An archive manager keeps links in a separate service and may preserve page content, add notes, or make links searchable. A sync tool keeps bookmarks in your browser and copies them between browsers or storage backends.
- Choose an archive manager if you want to save, organize, search, annotate, share, or preserve pages outside the browser’s native bookmark system.
- Choose a sync layer if your main goal is to keep your existing browser bookmarks consistent across supported browsers or backends.
- Account for hosting. Several tools are self-hosted. Open-source availability does not remove the need to deploy, update, and maintain a server. Linkwarden also offers a hosted cloud service, but its availability does not establish that the hosted service is free.
“GUI” here means a user-facing web interface or browser interface; the available project descriptions do not establish these as six native desktop applications. The recommendations below are based on documented project features, not comparative hands-on testing.

Which tool fits your needs?
Linkwarden: collaboration and saved page copies
Linkwarden is an open-source, self-hosted collaborative bookmark manager focused on collecting, reading, annotating, and preserving webpages. Its project describes saving pages as screenshots, PDFs, and HTML, alongside reader view, highlights, collections, sub-collections, tags, full-text search, browser extensions, and mobile apps. Public sharing and collaboration make it a natural choice when bookmarks are shared work rather than a private list.

Linkwarden can also work with Floccus for browser bookmark synchronization. The project offers a hosted cloud service as well as self-hosting; do not assume the hosted option is free based on the availability of the self-hosted software.
linkding: minimal self-hosted bookmark organization
linkding is designed to be minimal and quick to set up, with Docker described as its deployment route. Its feature set includes tags, bulk editing, Markdown notes, read-later support, sharing, metadata fetching, and browser extensions. A bookmarklet offers another capture method, while PWA support lets users install its web interface like an app.
It supports Netscape HTML import and export, and describes both local archiving and Internet Archive archiving. Consider it if you want a relatively lean web UI for organizing links, rather than a feature-heavy research or collaboration workspace.

- The design of these planner bands is both functional and fun. The elastic material is stretchy yet durable, allowing them to fit snugly on the pages without causing any damage.
- They are 6.7 inches before they are stretched, they can extend to approx. between 20.32 cm/ 8 inches and 27.94 cm/ 11 inches, appropriate for most sizes of books, not so good on 3x5".
- These elastic bands can be used for more than just books. They work perfectly with planners, notebooks, binders, tablet, calendars, booklet, bible, paperback books, and even as page markers for recipes or important documents. The versatility of this set makes it a must-have for anyone who loves to keep their materials organized.
- One of the best features is how lightweight and portable they are. They can easily be slipped into a pocket or bag, so you can take them with you wherever you go.
- Great Gift for your family, friends, teachers, who loves reading books, taking notes and journaling.
Karakeep: varied saved items and search
Karakeep, formerly Hoarder, presents itself as a self-hostable “Bookmark Everything” app. Beyond links, it can handle notes, images, and PDFs. Its project documentation describes automatic link metadata, lists, collaboration, full-text search, semantic search, OCR, and full-page archiving.
Optional model-based features can generate tags and summaries, with local model support described by the project. Browser extensions and iOS and Android apps are also listed. These optional AI features are not required to use the core bookmark functions.
Shiori: a straightforward web app with a CLI
Shiori is a Go-based bookmark manager with both web and command-line interfaces. Its basic functions include adding, editing, deleting, and searching bookmarks. It supports Netscape bookmark import and export, as well as Pocket import.

- Fit Large Notebooks: Fits both regular and large notebooks, from 8" to 11" in height

- Detachable and Portable Design: The pen holder is detachable and can be easily attached or removed from your notebook, making it really handy to carry your writing instruments wherever you go
Where possible, Shiori parses readable page content and creates offline archives. Its repository describes browser-extension support as beta, so users who depend on a mature extension workflow should treat that status as a qualification rather than assume full support.
LinkAce: link archiving, sharing, and monitoring
LinkAce is a self-hosted link archive focused on organizing and managing links rather than directly replacing browser bookmarks. It offers lists and tags, multi-user sharing, private or public lists, link monitoring, Internet Archive archiving, and filtered search and ordering.
Additional capture and management options include a bookmarklet, metadata generation, REST API, RSS, HTML import and export, and backup options. This combination suits users who want a more managed archive, particularly when monitoring links or sharing lists matters.

Floccus: synchronization for native browser bookmarks
Floccus is the outlier in this group: it synchronizes browser-native bookmarks instead of providing a standalone archive. Its repository lists sync options through Nextcloud Bookmarks, Linkwarden, Karakeep, Google Drive, Dropbox, Git servers, and WebDAV.
Floccus supports WebExtension-compatible browsers including Firefox, Chrome, Edge, Opera, Brave, and Vivaldi. Safari is listed as not yet supported. The project also notes mobile apps, while warning that most mobile browsers do not support Floccus. If you want saved-page copies, annotations, or an independent archive, choose an archive manager instead.

Project descriptions identify Karakeep as AGPL-3.0, Shiori as MIT, LinkAce as GPL-3.0, and Floccus as MPL-2.0. The project information cited for Linkwarden and linkding does not establish their exact license names, so check each project’s current license file before relying on a particular license classification.

For self-hosted tools, factor in the work of deployment, updates, backups, and keeping the service available. Features such as collaboration or page preservation are useful only if your instance and its stored data remain accessible. The availability of a project’s source code does not by itself establish the price or terms of any hosted offering.
Which one should you pick?
- For shared collections and page preservation: Linkwarden.
- For a lean self-hosted bookmark UI: linkding.
- For links and other saved media with semantic search: Karakeep.
- For a simple web-and-CLI tool: Shiori.
- For an organized archive with link monitoring and sharing: LinkAce.
- For syncing browser-native bookmarks: Floccus.
These are feature-based fits, not a claim that one project performs better than another. The clearest first decision is archive versus synchronization; after that, choose based on preservation, search, collaboration, and your willingness to self-host.
