Eshmel, Cai, Dietrich, Theodora, Leda, and Sothis are the strongest Fortune’s Weave candidates for a future Super Smash Bros. roster. This is informed fan advocacy, not a Nintendo announcement: neither a next Smash game nor a Fortune’s Weave fighter has been confirmed.
Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave launched for Nintendo Switch 2 on September 17, 2026. Its time-spanning story follows heroes and recruited allies across four parallel paths as they oppose the demon god Balor. Nintendo’s developer interview, published September 15, places the adventure on Dagda, south of Fódlan, and explains that players can switch between protagonists before their stories converge.
That structure gives the game an unusually broad pool of Smash material. The six choices below are judged on moveset distinctiveness, narrative importance, visual identity, representation of Fortune’s Weave’s gods-versus-heroes story and four-path structure, and what each would add beyond existing Fire Emblem fighters.
Which Fortune’s Weave characters should be in Smash?
| Character | Why the choice works | What the fighter could add |
|---|---|---|
| Eshmel | Player-facing time-travel hero | A central Fortune’s Weave identity without copying an existing weapon archetype |
| Cai | Bo staff, gem-powered ranged attack and family-rescue story | A staff-centered fighter with a clear projectile hook |
| Dietrich | Ruthless monster hunter | A close-range pressure character who must distinguish itself from other swordsmen |
| Theodora | Queen of Saramis and prominent spear wielder | A mature ruler and lance user for the Fire Emblem lineup |
| Leda | Musician, dancer and revenge-driven competitor | An agile performance-themed moveset rather than another conventional swordsman |
| Sothis | Progenitor God with a giant battle axe | The clearest mythic representative of the game’s divine side |
1. Eshmel is the cleanest showcase for Fortune’s Weave
Nintendo Life describes Eshmel as “A true hero born to shed light upon the world.” In that account, Eshmel travels to the past with Fortuna at Sothis’s request, gathers allies and works toward defeating Balor. That role makes Eshmel the best single representative of the game’s time-travel premise and its movement between eras.
#1 Best Overall
- New stages and fighters are joined by the combined rosters of every past Super Smash Bros. Game
- Challenge others anytime, anywhere, whether you're on the couch or on the go
- Play any way you want—locally, online, in TV mode, Tabletop mode, Handheld mode, or even with GameCube Controllers
- Fight faster and smarter with new and returning techniques, like the perfect shield and directional air dodge
- Face off in 2-4 player battles, or play against the computer
Eshmel’s exact weapon and complete battle kit are not established in the available official descriptions, so a Smash moveset should remain open rather than pretend that a canonical loadout exists. A future design could make the past-and-present journey its organizing idea, using carefully defined time-manipulation effects or ally calls while preserving Eshmel as a straightforward hero. The important point is representational: Eshmel would tell players immediately that Fortune’s Weave is more than another medieval sword story.
2. Cai could bring a staff-and-energy fighting style
Nintendo describes Cai as “A young boy determined to save his father from imprisonment.” The August 4, 2026 Direct report says he comes from Ribeira and enters the Heroic Games to rescue him. Official screenshots show Cai carrying a bo staff and firing a gem-powered blast.
That combination supplies a practical Smash foundation: staff attacks for close and mid-range control, with the gem energy providing a ranged option. It also gives Cai a motivation that reads clearly in a fighting-game trailer. His youth and determined rescue mission would contrast with the royal, divine and revenge-focused candidates elsewhere in the cast.
Rank #2
3. Dietrich needs a distinct answer to Smash’s sword-fighter problem
Dietrich is officially “A ruthless swordman ever on the hunt for a stronger foe.” The Direct presents him as a warrior who joins the Heroic Games after surviving an attack by an enormous monster. His aggressive personality naturally suggests a close-range pressure fighter who rewards taking fights directly.
His challenge is obvious: Smash already contains many sword users. Dietrich would need more than a new blade model. His animations, reach, movement and special attacks should communicate a monster-hunter who pursues dangerous targets, not simply another balanced Fire Emblem swordsman. The monster-survival background offers that identity, but the final mechanics would be a design decision rather than an established Fortune’s Weave fact.
4. Theodora would expand Fire Emblem’s visual and political range
Nintendo calls Theodora “A queen seeking to fulfill the long-held dream of her homeland.” She leads Saramis, defends its peace and honors its goddess, according to the Direct coverage. Official imagery shows her with a large spear.
Rank #3
- International Version. ESRB rated. This game is tied to the USA region and any DLC content is available on the USA regional Nintendo eShop. Works on all systems worldwide. (Middle East / Southeast Asia -- Official Nintendo Product).
A lance-focused moveset would immediately separate Theodora from the series’ dominant sword presentation. Her large spear can support deliberate spacing, grounded reach and commanding anti-air attacks, while her status as a mature ruler adds a type of Fire Emblem protagonist Smash has comparatively little of. Theodora also represents the political side of the four-path narrative: a leader defending a nation rather than a lone adventurer chasing personal glory.
5. Leda offers the roster’s strongest performance-based concept
Nintendo describes Leda as “A talented musician with her sights set on taking her revenge.” The Direct says she enters the Heroic Games after discovering that her father’s killer is competing. Nintendo Life identifies her as a dancer and player of enchanting music who avoids counterattacks with grace.
Leda’s strongest Smash argument is not a particular weapon but a different combat language. Her attacks could be framed around movement, rhythm and performance, with music or dance shaping timing and spacing. Those are editorial concepts, not a published moveset, but they follow directly from her musician-and-dancer characterization. Leda would give the roster an agile, expressive fighter whose central conflict is revenge without reducing her to another sword animation set.
6. Sothis is the obvious mythic representative
Nintendo calls Sothis “The Progenitor God who sets you and Fortuna on a quest to save the world.” The official gallery depicts her holding a giant battle axe. She therefore connects the game’s divine mythology, its time-spanning mission and its most imposing visual weapon in one character.
Sothis would also broaden the Fire Emblem side of Smash beyond human nobles and wandering warriors. An axe-based kit could make her feel physically different from existing fighters, while her godhood supports a larger-than-life presentation for a reveal trailer or Final Smash. Her direct relationship to Fortuna’s quest gives her narrative importance even if Nintendo ultimately chose a mortal protagonist for the roster.

What would a Fortune’s Weave moveset look like?
The safest approach is to build each fighter from documented traits, then label any unannounced mechanics as adaptation. Cai’s staff and gem blast, Theodora’s spear, Leda’s music and dance, and Sothis’s axe provide concrete starting points. Dietrich’s pressure style and Eshmel’s time-travel theme are stronger as archetypes than as confirmed move lists.
- Keep the source identity visible. A staff, spear, axe or performance motif should be recognizable in normal attacks, not reserved only for a special move.
- Avoid clone design. Dietrich especially needs movement and attack properties that do not feel like a minor variation on existing sword fighters.
- Use the story selectively. Time travel, divine quests and family rescue can inform specials, taunts or a Final Smash without turning every move into exposition.
- Do not treat speculation as confirmation. Nintendo has published character descriptions and screenshots, not Smash-specific frame data, specials or roster plans.
Does the expanding Fortune’s Weave cast change the shortlist?
Not yet. Nintendo Support says Expansion Pass Wave 1, released October 14, 2026, adds prototype weapons modeled after the Heroes’ Relics from Three Houses. Wave 2, planned for holiday 2026, adds the gods Aurora, Smyrnos and Jurah plus outfits. Wave 3, planned for 2027, adds stories featuring Bertrand, Talimun, Orchel and Anatolia, along with new allies and classes.
Those additions may create more interesting candidates later, but downloadable content does not make any character a confirmed Smash fighter. The six recommendations remain the strongest starting set because they cover Fortune’s Weave’s central hero, its distinct combat visuals, its national and personal conflicts, and its divine mythology.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteVerdict: who is the best Fortune’s Weave fighter for Smash?
Eshmel is the best all-purpose representative because the time-travel mission expresses what makes Fortune’s Weave structurally different. Sothis is the strongest mythic pick, while Cai, Theodora and Leda offer the clearest ways to add staff, spear and performance-based gameplay. Dietrich deserves a place in the advocacy campaign if Nintendo can give his monster-hunting identity mechanics that justify another sword user.
That is a recommendation for a future roster, not a prediction of an announced lineup. As of October 15, 2026, Nintendo has confirmed neither the next Super Smash Bros. game nor any Fortune’s Weave playable character.
