These six CPUs can make sense in a DDR4 build, but the best value depends on the motherboard you already own, the total cost of the platform, and whether you prioritize gaming or multi-core work. The options span AMD’s AM4 platform and Intel’s LGA1700 platform; neither the list nor dated price examples establish that DDR4 is cheaper than DDR5 today.
Start with the platform you can reuse
Four picks use AMD’s AM4 socket, while two use Intel’s LGA1700 socket. That matters: a CPU that is attractive as an upgrade to a compatible board may be poor value if you must also buy a motherboard, memory, and possibly a cooler. Compare the full build cost rather than the processor price alone.
- Already own an AM4 motherboard? Check its CPU support list and BIOS version. A Ryzen 5 5600 or Ryzen 7 5700X may be a practical upgrade, while the Ryzen 7 5800X3D is aimed at a compatible existing system.
- Already own an LGA1700 motherboard? Check the board’s CPU support list and BIOS version, and confirm whether it accepts DDR4 or DDR5. Memory type is determined by the board, not by choosing a CPU that supports both.
- Building from scratch? Add the cost of a compatible board, RAM, cooling, and any BIOS update to the CPU price. A low-cost processor does not automatically make a low-cost platform.
How-To Geek’s August 2026 article cited about $120 for 16GB DDR4-3200 and about $210 for 32GB DDR4. Those are dated examples from that article, not current quotes or proof that DDR4 is the cheaper choice today. Check current local prices for comparable DDR4 and DDR5 kits before deciding.
Which CPU fits each kind of build?
AMD Ryzen 5 3600: a low-cost AM4 option, mainly used
The Ryzen 5 3600 is presented as a budget choice for gaming, office work, and a general desktop. How-To Geek’s article points to its 32MB L3 cache and PCIe 4.0 as advantages over the Ryzen 5 5500. It also notes that availability is mostly used or gray-market. Treat this as a model to consider only after checking the seller, condition, return policy, and total cost; the article’s suggested price ceiling is not current buying guidance.

AMD Ryzen 5 5600: the general budget AM4 pick
For a balanced AM4 build, the Ryzen 5 5600 is the article’s primary value recommendation. It is described as a six-core, twelve-thread Zen 3 processor with 32MB L3 cache and PCIe 4.0, and as close to the Ryzen 5 5600X in performance. Pair it with a compatible board—such as a suitable B550 model—and budget for 16GB or, preferably for a broader range of uses, 32GB of memory. Verify CPU support and BIOS compatibility for the exact board.
Intel Core i5-12400F: consider it in a board or system deal
The Core i5-12400F is a six-core, twelve-thread desktop CPU for FCLGA1700. Intel lists support for DDR4-3200 or DDR5-4800, but the motherboard decides which memory generation the build uses; a DDR4 and DDR5 board are not interchangeable. The article positions this model as a value choice when discounted or included in a good used-PC or bundle deal, paired with a compatible DDR4 B660 or B760 board. Intel 12th-, 13th-, and 14th-generation upgrade options depend on the specific board’s support and BIOS; check its CPU list before buying. Intel Core i5-12400F specifications.

AMD Ryzen 7 5700X: choose it when extra cores help
The Ryzen 7 5700X is the AM4 option to consider when your work can use eight cores, such as rendering, transcoding, or running virtual machines. Compared with the six-core Ryzen 5 5600, those additional cores are the reason to spend more; some CPU-heavy games may also benefit. For ordinary tasks or a gaming build where extra cores do not help, the 5600 is the more restrained choice. Confirm board support and account for cooling in the full build.

Intel Core i5-14600KF: higher performance with board and cooling checks
The article describes the i5-14600KF as a higher-performance LGA1700 choice, with six Performance cores, eight Efficient cores, and twenty threads. It can be used with DDR4 or DDR5 depending on the motherboard, so confirm the exact memory type before ordering RAM. An older LGA1700 board may need a BIOS update, and cooling costs belong in the budget. Check the board’s CPU support list and the cooler requirements for the specific system rather than assuming an older board is ready out of the box.
Rank #3
- LGA 1151 Socket: The Intel H110 Motherboard is compatible with Intel 6th/7th/8th/9th gen Core i3/i5, Pentium, Celeron Series processors. - NVME/NGFF M.2 Interface: NVME/NGFF M.2 Interface: NVME M.2 and SATA M.2 modes can be manually switched. The two modes use different lanes; NVME M.2 mode uses a PCIe 2.0 x4 lane, while the NGFF M.2 slot uses a SATA lane
- Video Interface: The Intel Motherboard is equipped with VGA and HDMI-compatible interfaces, which can support 1080P high-definition video output without an external graphics card. Note: To use these two interfaces, your CPU needs to support integrated graphics
- PCIe Slot: The computer motherboard provides 1 PCIe X16 slot. The PCIe standard is determined by the CPU, and under the PCIe 3.0 protocol, the X16 slot has a throughput of 128Gbps
AMD Ryzen 7 5800X3D: a premium gaming upgrade for compatible AM4 systems
The Ryzen 7 5800X3D is positioned as a gaming-focused, end-of-platform upgrade for owners of an AM4 system whose motherboard BIOS supports it. Its 3D V-Cache can improve performance in CPU-bound games, but it is a much less flexible choice as the centerpiece of a new platform purchase. How-To Geek reported a $349 MSRP for a 10-year AM4 anniversary edition; that is an MSRP reported in its August 2026 article, not a current retail price or confirmation of stock. Check current availability and the exact board’s support before considering it.

Make the buying decision on total cost
- Identify the board first. Find its exact model and revision, then consult its CPU support list for the processor and minimum BIOS version.
- Confirm memory generation. For Intel LGA1700, verify whether the chosen board takes DDR4 or DDR5. For any build, check the board’s memory specifications and use compatible modules.
- Price the complete upgrade. Include CPU, motherboard if needed, RAM, cooler if needed, and any cost or effort associated with a BIOS update.
- Match the chip to the workload. Choose the Ryzen 5 5600 for a general budget AM4 build, consider the 5700X when multi-threaded work benefits from more cores, and reserve the 5800X3D for a compatible AM4 gaming upgrade.
- Check the transaction, not just the model. For used or gray-market CPUs, assess seller reputation, condition, returns, and whether the assembled system can be tested. Compare current local offers; the 2026 RAM and MSRP figures above are historical examples.
