Free PC maintenance, a compatible storage upgrade, or a switch to free software can be sensible ways to spend less—but none is a guaranteed fix. First find out what is slowing the computer, then choose the least costly step that fits its hardware and the applications you need.
Why is my computer slow?
Slow performance can come from several different causes. Microsoft lists limited storage, too many startup apps, outdated software, and hardware that no longer meets performance needs among the possible contributors. That means one tweak may not solve the actual problem. Its Windows performance guidance applies to Windows 10 and Windows 11, and cautions that older PCs with outdated hardware may not improve much from software changes alone.
Use these six habits as a low-cost troubleshooting sequence, not a promise of a faster PC. Start with reversible maintenance; consider buying parts or changing operating systems only when the likely benefit and compatibility are clear.
What can I try before spending money?
1. Install Windows and optional driver updates
Check Windows Update, including optional driver updates, to see whether relevant updates are available. This is a maintenance step, not a guaranteed speed boost. Microsoft notes that keeping software current is one way to address potential performance contributors.

2. Scan for malware with Windows Security
Run a malware scan using Windows Security. Unwanted software can be one possible cause of performance problems, so checking for it is a practical diagnostic step before changing hardware.
3. Clear temporary files and review available storage
Use Storage Sense or Windows’ temporary-file cleanup options, then check how much drive space is available. Microsoft identifies limited storage as a possible contributor to a slow PC. Removing files you no longer need may help address that constraint, but it will not resolve unrelated causes such as a hardware bottleneck.

4. Trim startup apps and close programs you are not using
Review which apps launch when Windows starts and disable startup entries you do not need. Close unused programs, too. Microsoft recommends managing startup apps and closing unnecessary apps as ways to investigate sluggish performance.
5. Check Task Manager before guessing
Open Task Manager and review resource use to see whether a program is consuming an unusual share of system resources. This can help you identify whether the slowdown is associated with a running app rather than assuming that the PC needs more memory or a new drive. Intel also points readers to resource use when diagnosing a slow computer in its slow-computer guidance.

When is it worth changing a setting or buying a part?
6. Choose performance settings or upgrades only when they fit
Windows offers visual-effects and power-mode settings that may be relevant, but they involve tradeoffs. Microsoft says selecting Best performance increases power consumption; on a laptop, that can mean faster battery drain and more heat. Use that mode selectively rather than treating it as a universal fix.
If storage appears to be the bottleneck, an SSD may be an option for an older PC that uses a hard disk drive. Intel and PCWorld discuss SSD upgrades as a possible way to improve an older or slow computer, but neither establishes that a particular drive will fit yours or guarantees a result. Before buying, check the computer’s supported drive type, interface, form factor, capacity needs, and whether its drive can be replaced. PCWorld’s overview of low-cost ways to speed up an old PC also notes that component prices vary, so its figures should not be treated as current prices.

Memory is another possible upgrade, but do not choose a module based on a generic capacity or speed recommendation. Intel says RAM must match the device to function. Confirm the computer model and its supported memory generation, speed, and module type before selecting a part.

Could free software or Linux lower the cost?
Free and open-source software can be a way to avoid paying for some tools. The GNU Project discusses free software in an educational context in its Free Software and Education material. Whether a free application suits you depends on what it needs to do.

Moving from Windows to Linux is another option discussed for older PCs, but do not assume that every Windows application or workflow has a suitable Linux equivalent. Before changing operating systems, list the programs and devices you rely on, then verify that each required task is supported. The effort and compatibility tradeoff may outweigh the savings for some users.
How should I choose the next step?
- If Windows storage is nearly full: review temporary files and other files you can safely remove before considering a larger or replacement drive.
- If startup or background activity is the concern: review startup apps and Task Manager before buying RAM or storage.
- If an older hard drive appears to be the limiting factor: check SSD compatibility and replaceability before shopping.
- If you suspect a memory limit: identify the PC model and verify compatible RAM specifications before choosing a module.
- If software costs are the concern: evaluate free tools or Linux against the applications and workflows you actually need.
- If battery life matters: weigh the power use of Best performance mode before enabling it on a laptop.
For any option, weigh the likely bottleneck it addresses against direct cost, compatibility, setup effort, portability, and power use. Microsoft’s current performance page covers Windows 10 and Windows 11; it notes that Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025, so check the current supported-version status for your device before relying on it.
