For a small number of downloads, a desktop app is usually easier than a command-line tool. For repeat jobs, playlists, predictable filenames, or automation, yt-dlp is the strongest option. This list compares six free choices by operating-system support, output formats, playlist handling, metadata, and the points where each one can fail.
Download or convert only content you have permission to save. YouTube’s terms and copyright rules may restrict downloading, even when a tool technically supports it.

1. yt-dlp: best for control and batch downloads
yt-dlp is the most capable option here, but it is a command-line downloader rather than a conventional converter window. It works well when you want repeatable commands, custom filenames, playlists, metadata, or a text file of URLs.
Convert one video to MP3
yt-dlp -x --audio-format mp3 "VIDEO_URL"-x extracts the audio and --audio-format mp3 converts it to MP3. The same extraction process supports M4A, FLAC, Opus, Vorbis, and WAV.

yt-dlp is not immune to YouTube’s current anti-automation changes:
- PO Tokens: YouTube is progressively enforcing Proof-of-Origin tokens. yt-dlp cannot generate them, so some formats or features may be unavailable without externally supplied tokens. The extractor documentation suggests trying the
mwebclient with a PO Token when default clients fail. - OAuth: yt-dlp’s YouTube OAuth login no longer works under current restrictions. The documented alternative is cookies.
- Cookies: cookies from an ordinary open browser session may rotate frequently. The extractor documentation recommends exporting cookies from a private/incognito session with a supported browser extension.
- Rate limits: “This content isn’t available, try again later” can mean the guest session or account has exceeded a request limit. For batches, add roughly 5–10 seconds between downloads using yt-dlp’s sleep options. The current documentation gives approximate default-session limits of about 300 videos per hour for guests and 2,000 per hour for accounts.
Choose yt-dlp if: you are comfortable with a terminal and want the best control over naming, metadata, playlists, and batch processing.
2. MediaHuman YouTube to MP3: best desktop balance
MediaHuman YouTube to MP3 is a conventional desktop application for Windows, macOS, and Ubuntu. The current product listing shows version 3.9.19, dated March 18, 2026; the software is therefore included as a current option, although that listing is newer than the 2025 date in this article’s title.
Its distinctive behavior is clipboard tracking. With the application open, copy a YouTube URL in your browser and MediaHuman detects it and adds the clip to the queue automatically. Select the output format and quality in the application, then start the queue.

It supports MP3 at up to 320 kbps, as well as saving the original M4A/AAC audio without conversion. That distinction matters: saving M4A/AAC can avoid conversion-related quality loss, but converting that audio to MP3 is still a lossy conversion.
The application detects artist and track title information, writes metadata to downloaded files, and includes a tag editor for changing tags and cover art. It can also download all music from a playlist or channel, monitor updates, and retrieve only newly added videos.
Watch for: copying any URL while MediaHuman is running may enqueue it immediately. Clipboard tracking is convenient for a queue, but turn it off or close the application if you do not want every copied link processed.
Choose MediaHuman if: you want a graphical interface, automatic metadata, playlist support, and a choice between converted MP3 and original M4A/AAC.

ClipGrab keeps the process visible and simple. Its official FAQ lists it as free for Windows, Mac, and Linux; the current Windows download is ClipGrab 3.9.15.
Exact conversion steps
- Copy the YouTube URL from the browser address bar using
Ctrl+Con Windows/Linux orCmd+Con macOS. - Open ClipGrab and select the Downloads tab.
- Paste the link into the input field with
Ctrl+VorCmd+V. - In the Format select box, choose MP3 (audio only).
- Choose a quality in the Quality dropdown.
- Click Grab this clip!.
- Choose the filename when prompted.
ClipGrab downloads the source and automatically converts it to MP3. Its FAQ recommends selecting at least 480p in the Quality dropdown for sufficient audio quality. That is ClipGrab’s application guidance, not a general rule that 480p directly determines the resulting MP3 bitrate; video resolution and audio bitrate are separate properties.
If the URL does not appear in the input field on the Downloads tab, ClipGrab has not gathered the video information yet. The format and conversion controls may not be ready until the link is pasted into that specific field.

Choose ClipGrab if: you want a small, clearly labeled workflow for occasional downloads and do not need advanced playlist automation.

4K YouTube to MP3 is a desktop application separate from 4K Video Downloader Plus. The current product page lists version 25.3.4.0241, dated October 23, 2025, and supports Windows 11 or newer, macOS 12 or newer, and Ubuntu 22.04 64-bit with GNOME or newer.
The free-starting application handles MP3, M4A, and OGG. It can download complete YouTube playlists and channels and accept several individual video links at once. The product page says it can save audio at the quality stored on the website and lets you lower the quality to reduce file size.
There is an important qualification around its YouTube Premium feature: downloading tracks, playlists, and channels through that feature at up to 256 kbps is described as available exclusively to YouTube Premium members.
Do not interpret “4K” as an MP3 quality setting. It is part of the product name; MP3 quality is governed by the available source audio and the application’s audio-quality controls.

How the two-step workflow works
- Install Freemake Video Downloader and use it to download the permitted YouTube video.
- Open the downloaded video in Freemake Audio Converter.
- Choose MP3 as the output format and export the audio.
The current listing shows Freemake Video Downloader 6.0.1, released October 17, 2025, with Windows Vista through Windows 11 support and claims support for more than 10,000 sites. Freemake Audio Converter is listed separately at version 1.1.9, released December 6, 2022. The converter supports MP3, WMA, WAV, FLAC, M4A, AAC, and OGG, and can also join audio tracks or export MP3 to iTunes.
The official pages do not verify a current direct-URL workflow in Audio Converter, so treat local-video conversion as the supported path rather than assuming that Audio Converter accepts a YouTube link.
Freemake installation and capture notes
Freemake Video Capture analyzes webpages to detect a source. If its capture component is disabled in Windows Task Manager, Freemake may fall back to downloading only from its listed supported sites instead of using the broader webpage-detection behavior.
During installation, the “Help make Freemake software better…” checkbox controls whether FreemakeUtilsService is installed. Freemake describes that optional service as collecting crash reports and usage statistics.
Choose Freemake if: you are on Windows and already have the Freemake tools installed, or you specifically want a broad local audio-conversion utility. It is less convenient than the dedicated converters because it requires two applications.

MP3 quality: what the settings actually mean
Converting a YouTube video to MP3 does not create detail that was absent from the source. A 320-kbps MP3 can be larger than a lower-bitrate file, but it cannot restore audio lost in the original upload or in an earlier conversion.

Also, do not confuse video resolution with audio quality. ClipGrab’s recommendation to select at least 480p is an application-specific instruction. A 480p video is not automatically an audio-quality setting, and “4K” in the 4K YouTube to MP3 product name does not mean 4K audio.

Can yt-dlp download a YouTube playlist as MP3?
Yes. Use yt-dlp with -x --audio-format mp3. Add an output template such as %(playlist_title)s/%(playlist_index)s - %(title)s.%(ext)s, plus --embed-thumbnail and --add-metadata if you want organized, tagged files.
Does yt-dlp still support YouTube OAuth login?
No. Current yt-dlp extractor documentation says YouTube OAuth no longer works because of new restrictions. Cookies are the documented alternative, although browser cookies can rotate and may need to be exported from a private/incognito session.
Is MediaHuman’s MP3 output original quality?

Why is ClipGrab not showing the MP3 controls?

Is Freemake Audio Converter a direct YouTube downloader?
The verified workflow is indirect: download the video with Freemake Video Downloader, then open the local video in Freemake Audio Converter and export MP3. The current official page does not verify that Audio Converter directly accepts a YouTube URL.
