The best coffee grinder depends on what you brew: Tom’s Guide names the Eureka Mignon Specialita its overall pick, the Baratza Encore ESP for espresso, and the Comandante C40 MK4 as its premium hand grinder. Those are one publisher’s results, not a universal ranking. Particle measurements help explain how grinders differ, but tasting and daily workflow matter just as much.

Below, the six picks are matched to their strongest use cases, with test figures and prices attributed to the publications that reported them. Prices and availability can change, so check current listings before buying.

How to choose a grinder before comparing models

Start with your brew method. Espresso requires fine adjustment so you can dial in a shot; a grinder that works well for filter coffee may not offer the control or performance you need. For pour-over, drip, or other filter methods, consider whether the grinder produces a distribution that suits your recipe and whether its workflow is convenient for your routine.

Particle size matters because it affects how quickly water moves through coffee and, in turn, extraction and flavor. Mark Trujillo, founder of Hub Coffee Roasters, told Homes & Gardens: “The grinder is the most important tool in your arsenal as a barista. Grind size controls how quickly water moves through the coffee, shaping extraction and, ultimately, flavor.” Homes & Gardens’ 2026 guide also describes comparing grinders side by side and blind-tasting drinks made with their grounds.

Read particle analysis alongside tasting

A particle-size plot or sieve test shows how grounds are distributed across size ranges; it does not, by itself, tell you which cup will taste best. In its 2026 guide, Tom’s Guide used stacked Kruve sieves to divide grounds into three particle-size ranges. Its broader evaluation included retention, clumping, static, noise, ease of use, settings, and value. Sieve cutoffs, coffee, grind setting, brewing recipe, and evaluator can all affect results, so treat the rankings as that publication’s testing conclusions rather than a universal standard.

WIRED’s February 2026 guide connects particle-distribution plots with tasting observations. At a drip or pour-over setting, it describes a single high peak for the Fellow Ode Gen 2 and reports precise aromatics. It describes the Baratza Encore ESP’s pour-over grind as broader and more heterogeneous, with a rounder, fuller-bodied cup and less precise aromatics. Those are WIRED’s observations at its reported settings, not a guarantee that a particular curve produces the same flavor with every coffee or recipe.

Fellow’s explanation of particle analysis is useful for understanding the method, but its data are explicitly preliminary: they came from an early “T0” manufacturing sample, covered selected fine and medium-fine settings, and noted an analyzer accuracy issue at coarser settings. They should not be generalized to current retail units.

Account for retention and workflow

Retention is the ground coffee left inside a grinder after dosing. A low measured amount can help when you want each dose to represent freshly ground beans, but results depend on the test method and grinder setup. Clumping can make espresso puck preparation less convenient; Tom’s Guide mentions a WDT tool as one optional way to break up clumps, not an essential purchase for every user. Also consider hand effort, noise, mess, counter space, adjustment clarity, and how you prefer to dose.

The six coffee grinders and who they suit

The picks below follow Tom’s Guide’s six-model selection and use-case labels. The quoted prices are figures reported on that guide’s page, not verified current offers.

Grinder Best fit What the cited guide reports Trade-off to consider
Eureka Mignon Specialita Overall pick; especially espresso Flat burrs, stepless adjustment, low retention, and minimal clumping; roughly $600 US reported by Tom’s Guide Premium-priced and better suited to a narrower range of brew types than some alternatives
Baratza Encore ESP Espresso pick Good uniformity at fine espresso settings; 1.55% average retention in Tom’s Guide’s 2026 test; approximately $199 reported Consistency falls off at coarser settings, making it less compelling as a filter-first all-rounder
Comandante C40 MK4 Premium hand grinder Selected by Tom’s Guide as its hand-grinder pick Hand-powered operation means grinding takes manual effort
1Zpresso Q Air Budget hand grinder 30 settings, a 38 mm conical burr, compact body, and 0.1 grams average retention in Tom’s Guide’s 2026 test; $60 reported Espresso grinding takes more effort, and the adjustment process can initially confuse users
Breville Dose Control Pro Budget electric pick Presented by Tom’s Guide as a lower-cost electric all-rounder Consider whether its budget-oriented positioning fits your needs compared with the ESP’s espresso focus or the Specialita’s premium capabilities
Mazzer Philos Premium pick Commercial-level flat I200D burrs, 130 stepless settings, and a 60 g hopper capacity, according to Tom’s Guide Expensive; Tom’s Guide notes a 12-month warranty

Eureka Mignon Specialita: for espresso-focused buyers

Tom’s Guide’s overall pick is a premium flat-burr grinder with stepless adjustment. The guide praises its low retention and minimal clumping, and says it is particularly capable for espresso. Its narrower range of suitable brew types is important: if you regularly switch between espresso and coarser filter settings, make sure its adjustment range and your workflow suit that mix. Tom’s Guide cited a price of roughly $600 in the US; treat that as a time-sensitive figure, not a current offer.

Baratza Encore ESP: for espresso on a tighter budget

The Encore ESP is Tom’s Guide’s espresso selection. In that publisher’s 2026 testing, its average retention was 1.55%, and it showed good uniformity at fine espresso settings. The guide says consistency drops at coarser settings, so filter-first drinkers may find it a less convincing all-rounder. Its page cited an approximately $199 price; verify the current price and availability.

Comandante C40 MK4: the premium manual option

Tom’s Guide names the C40 MK4 as its hand-grinder pick. As a hand-powered grinder, it requires you to turn the mechanism for each dose, so portability and a manual routine may matter more than speed. The cited guide does not establish comparative performance figures here; choose it as the premium manual option in this group rather than assuming unsupported advantages over other grinders.

1Zpresso Q Air: a compact budget hand grinder

Tom’s Guide lists 30 settings and a 38 mm conical burr for the Q Air, and reports 0.1 grams average retention in its 2026 test. It highlights portability and value, with a $60 price on its page. The trade-offs are practical: espresso grinding takes more effort, and newcomers may need time to understand the adjustment process. Check current stock and pricing.

Breville Dose Control Pro: a lower-cost electric all-rounder

Tom’s Guide presents the Dose Control Pro as a budget electric choice for more than one brew style. The cited information does not establish a specific particle-analysis or retention result for it, so do not infer one from the label “all-rounder.” If espresso is your priority, compare its budget positioning with the Encore ESP; if you want the premium capabilities Tom’s Guide attributes to the Specialita, weigh those against the higher cited price.

Mazzer Philos: a premium grinder with a warranty trade-off

Tom’s Guide lists commercial-level flat I200D burrs, 130 stepless settings, and a 60 g hopper capacity. It also quotes tester Erin’s strong endorsement, while describing the grinder as expensive and noting a 12-month warranty. Consider the cost and stated warranty alongside the extensive adjustment range and hopper capacity rather than treating the praise as a reason to overlook ownership terms.

Which grinder should you choose?

  • You mainly make espresso: Start with the Specialita if you are considering a premium option, or the Encore ESP if its more budget-oriented cited price better fits your budget. Both picks are tied to espresso by Tom’s Guide, but the guide reports different trade-offs for each.
  • You want a manual grinder: The C40 MK4 is the premium hand-grinder pick; the Q Air is the compact budget option with stated settings and retention results.
  • You switch among brew methods: Prioritize adjustment range and performance at the grind sizes you actually use. The guide specifically cautions that the ESP is less compelling at coarser settings and that the Specialita suits a more limited range of brew types.
  • You care most about a low-retention result: Compare only the measured figures reported by the same publisher and remember they do not establish how much coffee every user will retain in daily use.
  • You want a premium grinder with a larger hopper: The Philos has a stated 60 g hopper capacity, but its high cost and 12-month warranty are part of the decision.

What the reported prices and test figures mean

Tom’s Guide’s page, last updated 3 June 2026, cited roughly $600 for the Specialita, approximately $199 for the Encore ESP, and $60 for the Q Air. These are publisher-reported prices at the time of that page update, not a guarantee of current pricing or availability. Homes & Gardens said the grinders in its separate 2026 guide ranged from around $60 to over $400; that describes its comparison set, not the whole market.

The two retention figures in Tom’s Guide’s review are not directly interchangeable measurements of cup quality: 1.55% average retention for the Encore ESP and 0.1 grams average retention for the Q Air use different units. They describe that publisher’s tests, not population-level performance estimates. No single retention number or particle plot can replace checking whether a grinder works for your beans, grind setting, and brewing routine.
