You can turn a spare computer into a useful home server, but “any old PC” is too broad: the right project depends on its processor, memory, storage, and the work you expect it to do. Pi-hole is a light starting point if you are comfortable changing DNS settings; Home Assistant and Jellyfin offer other approachable uses. Nextcloud and Immich need more resources and upkeep, while a local backup target is a practical way to learn server basics without entrusting unique files to a new service.
Check the computer before choosing a project
Start by identifying the CPU model, installed RAM, available disk space, operating system, and whether the machine can stay connected to your network. Also consider the condition of its storage: an old computer with a failing drive is a poor home for the only copy of important files.
The requirements below are not performance guarantees. Actual results depend on the machine and workload, and the available documentation does not provide comparable benchmarks, power measurements, setup-time estimates, or quantified security-risk rankings for these six projects.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems1. Pi-hole: filter DNS requests on your home network
Pi-hole is a lightweight DNS filtering service, and its official prerequisites list 512 MB of RAM and 2 GB of free space for supported x86_64 systems. It is not limited to Raspberry Pi hardware. Check the current Pi-hole prerequisites before installing.

What it takes to use it across the network
Give the server a stable network address, either by setting a static IP or creating a DHCP reservation. To use Pi-hole for network-wide DNS filtering, configure the router or individual clients to use it as their DNS resolver; installation alone does not change where devices send DNS requests. The official Pi-hole setup documentation covers the installation and configuration steps.
Who should start here
Choose Pi-hole if you want a modest first project and are comfortable changing DNS settings and troubleshooting connectivity if a configuration change causes problems. DNS filtering can block many domain-based ads and trackers, but it does not block every ad or tracking method.
2. Home Assistant: bring smart-home devices together
Home Assistant can run on existing x86-64 hardware, including a spare desktop or laptop. Depending on how you want to manage it, installation options include Home Assistant OS, a container, or a virtual machine. Its installation guide explains the available approaches, and its hardware FAQ also identifies an existing mini PC, NUC, Raspberry Pi, or VM as possible ways to run it.
Plan around the devices you own
A radio dongle is optional, not a universal requirement. You may need one if the smart-home devices you want to connect use a radio protocol that your computer does not already support. Check the protocols and integrations your devices need before buying hardware.

Choose an installation style you can maintain
Home Assistant OS is a dedicated appliance-style option; containers and virtual machines can suit people who already manage those environments. The best fit depends on whether you want the home-automation system to be the computer’s main job or one service among others.
3. Jellyfin: organize and stream a personal media library
Jellyfin provides installation routes for common desktop systems, Linux, and containers; choose from its current installation documentation based on the operating system and setup you plan to maintain.
Check CPU support, especially on older hardware
For Jellyfin 10.11, the project says x86 CPUs need SSE4.1 support, which it identifies as present in Intel Penryn-generation processors and later and AMD Bulldozer-generation processors and later. Its hardware selection guide explains the relevant hardware considerations. Verify your processor rather than assuming that an old computer is compatible.
Direct playback is different from transcoding
When a client can play a file in its existing format, the server may be able to direct-play it. If the client needs a different format, resolution, or bitrate, Jellyfin may need to transcode it. Transcoding can demand substantially more compute or compatible hardware acceleration, so a machine that handles direct playback may struggle with simultaneous or demanding conversions.

4. Nextcloud: host files and synchronization
Nextcloud is a fuller server stack, not just a lightweight file-sharing app. Its server requirements specify a supported 64-bit software stack, including a database, web server, and PHP runtime. The Nextcloud system requirements give the supported components and memory guidance.
Account for workload and memory
Nextcloud’s manual gives 128 MB of RAM per process as a minimum and 512 MB as its recommendation. Those figures do not mean the whole server will run well with only that amount: memory use varies with users, installed apps, file count, and activity. A small personal setup and a busy multi-user server are different workloads.
Use current deployment guidance
The administration manual lists automated deployment routes such as Nextcloud AIO and a community Snap package. Consult the current Nextcloud installation guidance rather than following an old tutorial that may describe outdated dependencies or steps.
5. Immich: build a self-hosted photo library
Immich is designed for a self-hosted photo library and phone uploads. Its current requirements list a minimum of 6 GB of RAM and 2 CPU cores, with 8 GB of RAM and 4 cores recommended. The Immich requirements page also says systems with 4 GB of RAM can run it with machine-learning features disabled. Its quick start requires Docker; see the Immich quick-start guide.

Leave room for generated media
Immich says thumbnails and transcoded video increase library size by 10–20% on average. Keep that additional storage in mind when planning disk space, alongside the original photos and videos.
Keep a separate backup
A photo library hosted on one old PC is still just one copy. Before moving irreplaceable images into a new setup, make sure you have an independent copy and a way to restore it.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.6. A local backup target: practice copying and restoring files
Use the spare PC, or a separate drive connected to it, as a destination for scheduled copies from another device. This is a general practice project rather than a recommendation for a particular backup application: the available documentation here does not establish or vet a specific backup service.

- Schedule copies from a separate computer or storage device.
- Restore a sample file and verify that it works; a completed copy job alone does not prove that recovery will work.
- Keep another copy independent of the server. For important data, do not rely on one old PC or one disk.
An external USB drive can be one way to hold a separate copy, but it is not a complete backup strategy by itself. What matters is having an independent copy and checking that restoration works.
How to choose your first project
| Project | Official hardware information | Main setup consideration | Workload or failure concern |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pi-hole | 512 MB RAM, 2 GB free space, and x86_64 support listed in Pi-hole prerequisites. | Stable IP address or DHCP reservation; configure router or clients to use it for DNS. | A DNS misconfiguration can disrupt name resolution for affected clients; it will not block every ad or tracker. |
| Home Assistant | Can run on x86-64 hardware; no comparable minimum RAM figure is established here. | Choose OS, container, or VM; add a radio dongle only if the devices require it. | Device and protocol compatibility depends on the intended smart-home setup. |
| Jellyfin | Version 10.11 requires SSE4.1 on x86; the hardware guide identifies CPU-generation examples. | Install for the chosen desktop OS, Linux system, or container. | Direct playback is less demanding than transcoding, which can need more compute or hardware acceleration. |
| Nextcloud | Supported 64-bit stack with database, web server, and PHP; manual gives 128 MB RAM per process minimum and 512 MB recommendation. | Deploy and maintain the required server components using current guidance. | Memory needs vary with users, apps, files, and activity. |
| Immich | 6 GB RAM and 2 cores minimum; 8 GB and 4 cores recommended. The 4 GB option requires disabling machine learning. | Quick start requires Docker. | Thumbnails and transcoded video add 10–20% to library size on average; retain a separate backup. |
| Local backup target | No specific minimum or application established here. | Schedule copies, test restores, and keep another independent copy. | A single old PC or disk should not hold the only copy of irreplaceable data. |
For a first server project, Pi-hole is a reasonable starting point if you can manage DNS changes. Home Assistant or Jellyfin are alternatives when their purpose better matches your interests and hardware. Treat Nextcloud and Immich as later projects if you are still learning routine updates and backups, especially before putting unique files or photos on them.
What an old PC does not tell you
The label “old” does not reveal whether the machine meets a service’s CPU requirements, has enough memory, or has healthy storage. Nor does the documentation establish how much electricity a specific system will use or how well it will perform with your files and devices. Check the actual hardware and intended workload before choosing, and keep recovery copies separate from services that hold important data.
