Yes—5 GHz Wi-Fi range extenders exist. A model described as dual-band typically supports both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz, but that label alone does not tell you how it connects back to the router or how well it will work in your home. Check the model’s band and backhaul specifications, then place it where it still receives a usable signal from the router.
What a 5 GHz Wi-Fi extender does
A range extender connects to your existing Wi-Fi network and rebroadcasts a signal so devices can connect from another location. NETGEAR describes this as the extender acting as a client of the existing network and as an additional access point for client devices. An extender that supports 5 GHz can use that band, but the actual connection and coverage depend on the extender, router, surroundings, and placement.
For a documented example, TP-Link’s RE215 is a dual-band extender operating on 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz. Its product page lists maximum signal rates of 433 Mbps on 5 GHz and 300 Mbps on 2.4 GHz. Those are manufacturer specifications, not promised internet or application speeds. TP-Link RE215 specifications.

What to check in the specifications
- Supported bands and Wi-Fi generation: Confirm that the model explicitly lists 5 GHz, rather than assuming from its name or appearance. Check the exact regional model and version.
- Backhaul: Backhaul is the connection between the extender and router. Band support does not establish whether an extender has a dedicated wireless backhaul. Look for explicit details about simultaneous wireless backhaul or a wired Ethernet backhaul.
- Wired use: Check whether the model has an Ethernet port and an access-point mode if you can run a cable to the coverage area. In access-point mode, a wired connection supplies the network and the device provides Wi-Fi.
- Compatibility and placement aids: Check compatibility with your router or mesh system, and look for a signal indicator or setup app that can help you find a suitable location.
Examples of published 5 GHz specifications
The figures below are manufacturer-listed maximum signal rates or Wi-Fi speeds, not independent measurements. They cannot establish which extender will be fastest in a particular home.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

TP-Link says its listed maximum wireless signal rates are physical rates derived from IEEE 802.11 specifications. Real throughput depends on factors such as the router connection, distance, obstructions, interference, and connected devices. Compare documented features and compatibility rather than treating headline rates as a speed ranking.
Where to place the extender
An extender can only relay the signal it receives. If it is placed where the router’s signal is already weak, the extended connection may also be weak. NETGEAR advises avoiding obstructions and sources of interference; no single distance from the router is a universal placement rule for every home or product. NETGEAR extender support and FAQs.

- Start with the extender’s setup guidance, signal indicator, or app. TP-Link describes the RE215’s signal indicator as a way to find a stronger-signal location.
- Choose a location between the router and the area that needs coverage, while keeping the extender within usable router signal.
- Test the connection in the target room and adjust the location if needed. Walls, layout, interference, and device placement can change the result.
When a wired access point may fit better
If Ethernet can reach the area that needs coverage, an extender with access-point mode may let you use that cable to provide Wi-Fi nearby. TP-Link lists access-point mode for the RE215 and RE705X. This feature is model-specific, so verify it in the product specifications rather than assuming every extender supports it.
