The biggest 5G trends in 2026 are gradual growth in Standalone networks, the move toward 5G-Advanced, more commercial network-slicing offers, lower-complexity RedCap devices, satellite-network integration and 5G home broadband. They are at different stages: some have commercial offers today, while others are still developing standards and capabilities. What you can actually use depends on your country, mobile operator, plan and device.

5G is growing, but the architecture is still changing

More people are using 5G, while operators continue to upgrade the networks behind the service. Ericsson reported that its June 2026 Mobility Report put global 5G subscriptions at nearly 3.3 billion. In a separate June 16, 2026, press release, the company said 162 million subscriptions had been added in the first quarter of 2026, bringing the total to 3.1 billion at that point. These are figures from different reporting snapshots, not interchangeable counts.

The important shift is not simply more 5G connections. Operators are also moving from early deployments built partly on 4G infrastructure toward Standalone 5G, which can support more advanced ways to manage and differentiate network services.

Standalone 5G is advancing, but NSA remains part of the picture

Non-Standalone (NSA) 5G uses existing 4G infrastructure for parts of the network. Standalone (SA) 5G uses a 5G core, giving operators a stronger foundation for capabilities such as network slicing and more tailored services. A phone displaying a 5G icon does not, by itself, tell you whether it is connected to an SA network or receiving every capability that SA can enable.

The Global mobile Suppliers Association (GSA) reported that, as of April 20, 2026, 95 operators had launched an SA service. Of the launched 5G services it counted, 29% were SA and 71% were NSA. That makes SA a sign of network evolution, but not yet the default architecture for all launched 5G services. As GSA put it, “5G Standalone is becoming the clearest marker of market maturity.”

5G-Advanced is a set of developing capabilities, not a universal 2026 upgrade

5G-Advanced is an evolution of 5G standards and network capabilities. The GSMA roadmap associates its beginning with Release 18 and maps further development across 2025–2027. A standards roadmap describes technical direction; it does not guarantee that every feature will launch in every market during 2026.

  • OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.

What the roadmap is working toward

  • Network automation and AI/ML: applying machine learning to network operations and management.
  • RedCap evolution: improving support for devices that need 5G but not the full complexity of a high-end smartphone.
  • Energy savings: developing ways to make network operation more efficient.
  • Positioning and time-sensitive networking: capabilities relevant to precise location and applications with demanding timing needs.
  • Non-terrestrial networks (NTN) and XR optimization: further work on satellite-linked connectivity and network support for extended-reality applications.

Which capabilities reach customers first will depend on standards, network upgrades, compatible devices and operator decisions.

Network slicing is moving into commercial offers

Network slicing allows an operator to provide different network characteristics for particular services or customers using shared infrastructure. For example, an operator may offer a service designed around the needs of an enterprise customer rather than treating every connection identically. The actual performance and availability depend on the operator’s implementation and the service being sold.

  • 5G High-Speed Internet Gateway Designed for fast and stable connectivity using T-Mobile 5G network
  • Model G5AR-1 Official T-Mobile gateway device
  • Dual-Band WiFi Support Provides reliable wireless connections for multiple devices simultaneously
  • Wi-Fi 7
  • Wide Device Compatibility Works with PCs, smart TVs, smartphones, gaming consoles, and smart home devices

Ericsson counted 84 commercial 5G SA network-slicing offerings in June 2026, up from 65 six months earlier. That is a count of offerings—not a measure of how many customers use them or proof that slicing is broadly available to consumers. It does show that operators are developing ways to sell differentiated connectivity, particularly where a customer has specific service requirements.

RedCap, IoT and private networks target more than phones

RedCap—short for reduced capability—is intended for devices that need cellular 5G connectivity without the complexity and capabilities of a high-end smartphone. That makes it relevant to certain IoT devices and connected equipment where a simpler device profile may be more suitable.

These are opportunity areas, not a guarantee that a particular use case will deliver savings or returns. Satellite connectivity is part of the 5G direction, not a feature for every subscriber

Non-terrestrial networks connect mobile services with platforms such as satellites. The GSMA roadmap includes NTN development, satellite-terrestrial convergence and direct-to-device work as part of the broader 5G-Advanced direction, while GSMA Foundry highlights ongoing ecosystem activity in this area.

That progress should not be read as meaning every 5G phone or subscriber can connect to a satellite. Availability and capabilities depend on the implementation, compatible devices and service, as well as the market in which it is offered.

5G fixed wireless access brings the trend into home broadband

Fixed wireless access (FWA) uses a mobile network to deliver a fixed home or business internet connection, typically through a dedicated gateway or router. It can give people another broadband option where a suitable 5G service is available. Ericsson reported in its June 2026 Mobility Report that 71% of FWA service providers offered service over 5G; that figure describes providers, not the share of households using 5G broadband.

If you are considering a 5G home-internet gateway, check that the operator serves your address and approves the device. The gateway must support the operator’s required bands, and local coverage and service terms affect whether it will work for you. A device marketed as 5G-compatible is not automatically compatible with every carrier or location.
