To find out whether your phone can use 5G on a particular carrier, check the exact phone model and regional variant, compare its supported bands with that carrier’s 5G bands, and run the carrier’s IMEI compatibility checker. Then confirm coverage where you’ll use the phone, plan access, and whether the device is unlocked. A 5G label alone does not establish that the phone will work on your chosen network.
Start with the exact phone model and variant
Look up the model number in your phone’s settings or on its packaging, then use the manufacturer’s specifications to identify its supported 5G bands. Names such as a phone’s retail model name may cover multiple regional or carrier variants, and those versions can differ in radio support.
Check the specifications for the exact variant you own or plan to buy—not just a general product page or the fact that the phone advertises 5G. T-Mobile’s guidance says a device needs to support both the network frequency band and the technology in use (T-Mobile 5G network information).

Compare its bands with the carrier’s 5G network
Find the 5G bands used by your intended carrier and compare them with your phone’s specifications. Compatibility is carrier-specific: a phone can support 5G yet lack a band the carrier uses in your area or for the service layer you want.

T-Mobile 5G bands
T-Mobile lists n71 (600 MHz) for Extended Range 5G. Its Ultra Capacity 5G bands are n2/n25 (1900 MHz), n41 (2.5 GHz), n258 (24 GHz), n260 (39 GHz), and n261 (28 GHz). See T-Mobile’s 5G network information for its current network details.
AT&T 5G+ bands
AT&T says mid-band 5G+ requires support for n77, including C-Band or 3.45 GHz, while high-band 5G+ requires n260. High-band service is described as available at select airports, stadiums, venues, and other locations. Check AT&T’s 5G+ FAQ for its current requirements and service information.

Matching a band is an important compatibility check, but it does not guarantee that a carrier will accept the device or that a 5G signal is available at a particular address.

Use the IMEI checker for the carrier you plan to use. The IMEI is a device identifier; the carrier’s result helps determine whether that specific device is eligible for its network. It is a separate check from comparing the phone’s published bands, so do both.

- Find the IMEI. Check the phone’s settings or the device’s original packaging. Use the IMEI for the handset you intend to activate.
- Open the carrier’s checker. T-Mobile provides an IMEI Status Check and BYOD compatibility checker.
- Enter the IMEI and review the result. Follow the checker’s current instructions and confirm that the result applies to your exact phone.
- Resolve any uncertainty before switching. If the checker does not confirm compatibility, check the exact model specifications and contact the carrier before relying on the phone for service.
Carrier checkers and eligibility rules can change, so run the check close to the time you plan to activate the device.
Confirm coverage and plan access at your locations
A compatible phone will not receive 5G where the carrier has no 5G coverage. Check coverage for the places that matter to you, such as home, work, and regular travel destinations. Coverage maps are estimates; actual service can vary by location.

Also confirm that your plan includes access to the relevant 5G service. AT&T identifies coverage, an eligible plan, and a capable device as requirements for 5G access. Its 5G+ FAQ distinguishes the bands needed for mid-band and high-band service, so check the layer you expect to use as well as general 5G availability (AT&T 5G+ FAQ).

Check whether the phone is locked
A carrier-locked phone is restricted to its current carrier. Before moving a phone to another provider, check its lock status and, if necessary, request an unlock from the current carrier. AT&T’s device-lock guide describes how to check for restrictions in device settings; menu wording can vary by model and software version.

Unlocking and network compatibility are different. An unlocked phone may still lack the bands the new carrier uses or fail its device eligibility check. Verify all of these separately.
If you need a replacement phone, compare before buying
Use the following checks for every candidate. A manufacturer’s 5G claim or a match on one band is not enough to establish that a specific variant will work for your needs.
- Exact model and region variant: confirm the model number and the specifications for that version.
- Relevant 5G bands: match the phone’s supported bands to the carrier and service layer you want.
- Carrier eligibility: run the carrier’s IMEI checker or confirm its published compatibility information.
- Lock status: determine whether the phone is unlocked or can be unlocked before switching.
- Coverage and plan: check service at your usual locations and confirm the plan includes the relevant 5G access.
For example, AT&T’s Motorola Edge 2026 listing identifies n77 support and lists AT&T 5G+ support for n77 C-Band and n77 3.45 GHz. Treat this as a specification example, not a guarantee of eligibility or availability for every buyer; confirm the exact device and current carrier checker result before purchasing.
