5G Internet access means an Internet connection delivered over a fifth-generation mobile wireless network. It can connect a phone or other mobile device, or provide fixed wireless service to a home or business. The label describes the access technology—not a guaranteed speed, coverage area, plan, or compatible device.
What does 5G Internet access mean?
In practical terms, 5G Internet access is Internet connectivity using a 5G mobile network. The U.S. Federal Communications Commission (FCC) classifies 5G-NR as a fifth-generation mobile wireless technology and describes mobile wireless broadband as Internet information transfer over a mobile network. FCC: Mobile Broadband Subscription Definitions
The International Telecommunication Union (ITU) relates current 5G networks and services broadly to the IMT-2020 framework. However, ITU does not define “5G” as a marketing label. In an ITU News interview published on 25 February 2022, an ITU-R Study Group 5 counsellor said: “ITU does not have a definition for 3G, 4G or 5G and does not hold a position on how a given technology is labelled for marketing purposes.” ITU: 5G networks · ITU News: An inside look at mobile broadband standards development

How can 5G Internet reach a user?
Mobile broadband
A phone or another mobile device can connect to a 5G network for Internet access. This is mobile broadband: the connection is used by a device that can move between locations while using the mobile network.

Fixed wireless access
A provider may also sell service over a 5G-NR network for use at a particular home or business. This is commonly called 5G fixed wireless access (FWA): the last-mile connection is wireless rather than wired. The FCC includes service delivered over a 4G LTE or 5G-NR mobile network and sold as a fixed solution in its licensed terrestrial fixed wireless category. FCC: Fixed Technology Codes · FCC: Mobile Technology Codes
The words “5G Internet” alone do not tell you whether an offer is mobile or fixed-location service. For FWA, check which service address is eligible and which gateway or other equipment the provider supports; the 5G label does not establish that a router will work with every provider.

What the 5G label does—and doesn’t—tell you
- It identifies the network technology. In the FCC’s classification, 5G-NR is a fifth-generation mobile wireless technology.
- It can describe different service arrangements. A 5G network can provide mobile broadband or support fixed wireless service, depending on how a provider sells access.
- It does not specify your service’s performance or terms. The label alone does not establish download or upload speeds, latency, coverage at your location, data limits, price, or equipment compatibility. Those details depend on the provider, offer, location, and device.
To compare actual offers, first distinguish mobile service from fixed-location FWA. Then check address availability, expected download and upload performance, data limits, any latency claims, price, and required or compatible equipment. Look to the provider for the terms that apply to your location and plan.
How ITU counts active 5G mobile broadband subscriptions
ITU’s indicator for active mobile broadband subscriptions to 5G/IMT-2020 counts a subscription when it generated Internet traffic on a 5G/IMT-2020 mobile broadband network during the previous 90 days. It excludes subscriptions that generated traffic only on LTE/4G or earlier technologies. This is a statistical measurement rule, not a performance guarantee or a description of what any particular consumer plan includes. ITU: 5G/IMT-2020 indicator methodology
