The right wired over-ear headphones depend on where you listen and what matters most: an open-back design for airy home listening, or a closed-back pair when you want less sound leakage. These five picks cover those situations, plus budget-oriented listening and music production. They are recommendations for different uses, not a single universal ranking.

Which wired over-ear headphones should you buy?

Start with your listening environment. Open-back headphones let sound pass through their earcups, creating a spacious presentation but also letting audio escape. Closed-back models reduce leakage and provide some passive isolation; they do not provide active noise cancellation.

  • For neutral-oriented listening in a quiet room: Sennheiser HD 560S.
  • For a budget-oriented open-back option: Philips SHP9500.
  • For recording or reduced leakage: Sennheiser HD 480 PRO.
  • For balanced listening and production: Sennheiser HD 490 PRO.
  • For a closed-back pair with a detachable cable: Audio-Technica ATH-M50x.

Five wired over-ear headphone picks

1. Sennheiser HD 560S: open-back and neutral-oriented

The HD 560S is designed for neutral listening, with a generally flat sound profile and a spacious open-back presentation. It is also described as comfortable for longer sessions. Its low bass is limited compared with what some listeners may prefer, and the open construction leaks sound, so it is best suited to a quiet room rather than a shared space or recording setup with an open microphone. RTINGS’ HD 560S review discusses its sound and fit.

2. Philips SHP9500: a lower-cost open-back option

The SHP9500 offers a spacious, wide presentation and a comfortable fit for long listening sessions, making it a budget-oriented wired choice. It has less low-end presence than some listeners want, and its treble can sound piercing to some. Its fit is also less stable than the HD 560S, so it may not suit everyone. Like other open-back headphones, it leaks sound and is intended for quieter settings. RTINGS’ wired-headphone guide describes its strengths and tradeoffs.

  • Plug: L-shaped stereo mini plug 3.5mm. Impedance (Ohm) 24 ohm (1KHz). Cord Length 3.94 ft

3. Sennheiser HD 480 PRO: closed-back for recording contexts

The HD 480 PRO’s closed-back design leaks less sound than open-back options, which can make it more appropriate for recording. Its tuning follows the review’s target curve fairly closely, with some extra bass thump. That reduced leakage is a passive design benefit, not active noise cancellation. See RTINGS’ closed-back headphone guide for its assessment.

4. Sennheiser HD 490 PRO: balanced listening and production

The HD 490 PRO combines balanced mids and treble with an appealing low end. Its light, comfortable fit can work well for extended listening or music production. The plastic yokes feel less durable than the rest of the build, and its presentation is not as immersive as that of more expensive picks. RTINGS includes it in its wired-headphone recommendations.

5. Audio-Technica ATH-M50x: closed-back versatility and cable replacement

The ATH-M50x is a closed-back option aimed at audiophiles and audio professionals. Its detachable cable is a practical maintenance advantage: a damaged cable can be replaced without replacing the whole headphone. Compared with an open-back option such as the HD 560S, its design is more useful when reduced leakage and passive isolation matter. Sound preference and comfort are personal, so consider trying it if you can. RTINGS’ ATH-M50x review covers its features.

Open-back or closed-back headphones?

Design What it offers Best fit Tradeoff
Open-back Spacious presentation Quiet rooms and listening at home Sound leaks in and out, which can disturb others and make recording less suitable
Closed-back Reduced leakage and some passive isolation Recording and situations where you want to limit sound escaping It does not equal active noise cancellation; comfort and sound preferences vary by model

The HD 560S and SHP9500 are open-back choices for quieter settings. The HD 480 PRO is specifically identified as a closed-back option that may suit recording. The ATH-M50x is another closed-back choice when cable serviceability matters.

What to check before choosing

Tonal balance is a preference, not a guarantee

“Neutral” does not mean every listener will find a headphone ideal. The HD 560S has a reported low-bass limitation, while the SHP9500 has less low end and treble that may sound piercing to some people. If you are sensitive to fit or treble, try the headphones or check the seller’s return policy before buying.

Consider cable serviceability

The ATH-M50x has a detachable cable. By contrast, the DT 770 PRO cable is not detachable, so a cable failure can require replacing the entire pair, according to RTINGS’ DT 770 PRO review.

  • 40 mm drivers with rare earth magnets and copper clad aluminum wire voice coils
  • Tuned for enhanced low frequency performance

Match impedance to your source when considering the DT 770 PRO

Impedance guidance varies by DT 770 PRO version: RTINGS describes the 32-ohm model for mobile devices, the 80-ohm version for general studio use, and the 250-ohm version for professional equipment with additional amplification. Apply that guidance to those DT 770 PRO variants, not to every wired headphone. Check the exact model and your audio source before purchasing.

Are these the best wired over-ear headphones for everyone?

No single pick suits every listener. These models address different priorities—open or closed construction, tonal preference, fit, recording needs, and cable maintenance. This is a use-based shortlist, not a claim that RTINGS ranks these five together. Prices and stock change, and no synchronized comparison of current prices across all five models is established here.
