Windows has several network settings worth checking when Wi-Fi is slow, but no five-setting combination is proven to make every connection faster. Microsoft presents these controls as troubleshooting steps for specific connection problems—not universal speed boosts. Start with the changes that match your symptoms, and treat any improvement as something to verify on your own device and network.
What these five settings can—and cannot—do
The headline’s immediate improvement describes an individual experience; the computer, adapter, Windows version, network conditions, exact changes, and speed-test method behind it are not established. Microsoft’s guidance supports diagnosing Wi-Fi problems, but it does not promise that changing five settings will increase throughput on every PC.
These five checks address different causes: adapter power management, Windows and device updates, IP configuration, the local DNS cache, and network reset. They are not equivalent speed tweaks. A setting may help with a particular connection or name-resolution problem, while having no measurable effect on an otherwise healthy Wi-Fi link.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute1. Check Wi-Fi adapter power management
Microsoft includes disabling adapter power saving as a troubleshooting step. It may be relevant if the connection drops or behaves inconsistently, but the guidance does not say that switching it off will raise internet speeds for every computer.

- Wi-Fi 6 Mesh Wi-Fi - Next-gen Wi-Fi 6 AX3000 whole home mesh system to eliminate weak Wi-Fi for good(2×2/HE160 2402 Mbps plus 2×2 574 Mbps)
- Whole Home WiFi Coverage - Covers up to 6500 square feet with seamless high-performance Wi-Fi 6 and eliminate dead zones and buffering. Better than traditional WiFi booster and Range Extenders
- Connect More Devices - Deco X55(3-pack) is strong enough to connect up to 150 devices with strong and reliable Wi-Fi
- Our Cybersecurity Commitment - TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement
- More Gigabit Ports - Each Deco X55 has 3 Gigabit Ethernet ports(6 in total for a 2-pack) and supports Wired Ethernet Backhaul for better speeds. Any of them can work as a Wi-Fi Router
- Open Device Manager.
- Expand Network adapters, right-click your Wi-Fi adapter, and select Properties.
- If the Power Management tab is available, clear Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power, then select OK.
Windows may show different tabs or wording depending on the adapter and driver. Microsoft’s Wi-Fi troubleshooting instructions describe this as a way to address connection issues, not a guaranteed throughput optimization.
2. Install Windows and device-specific updates
Updates can matter when a Wi-Fi issue is caused by software or driver problems. Check Windows Update, and consult your computer or adapter manufacturer for device-specific driver, firmware, or compatibility information. Microsoft’s troubleshooting guide recommends checking for Windows updates and points users to manufacturer information for device issues.

- A New Way to WiFi: Deco Mesh technology gives you a better WiFi experience in all directions with faster WiFi speeds and strong WiFi signal to cover your whole home.
- Better Coverage than traditional WiFi routers: Deco S4 three units work seamlessly to create a WiFi mesh network that can cover homes up to 5, 500 square feet. No dead zone anymore.
- Seamless and Stable WiFi Mesh: Rather than wifi range extender that need multiple network names and passwords, Deco S4 allows you to enjoy seamless roaming throughout the house, with a single network name and password.
- Incredibly fast 3× 3 6 Stream AC1900 speeds makes the deco capable of providing connectivity for up to 100 devices.
- With advanced Deco Mesh Technology, units work together to form a unified network with a single network name. Devices automatically switch between Decos as you move through your home for the fastest possible speeds.
Use the driver and firmware information intended for your exact device. An update is a troubleshooting measure; the available guidance does not establish a predictable speed increase from installing one.

3. Use DHCP unless you need a manual network configuration
DHCP lets the router or access point assign IP and DNS settings automatically. Microsoft recommends it for most users because it simplifies TCP/IP configuration. A manually entered address can cause connectivity problems if it conflicts with the network’s configuration.

To review the setting, open Settings > Network & internet > Wi-Fi, select the connected network, and look for IP assignment or its edit control. Labels can vary by Windows version. Choose Automatic (DHCP) if you do not have a specific configuration supplied by a network administrator. See Microsoft’s network settings guidance.
Changing DNS servers is not established by these sources as a universal Wi-Fi speed fix. DNS affects how names are resolved; it does not by itself make the wireless radio link or internet service faster.

4. Reset the DNS resolver cache only for a relevant problem
A stale or problematic local DNS cache can interfere with reaching websites by name. Microsoft lists flushing and resetting the DNS client resolver cache among its troubleshooting commands. This targets name resolution, not Wi-Fi signal strength or the connection’s general throughput.

ipconfig /flushdns
The command clears the local resolver cache. It is not a general-purpose speed setting, and it may make no difference when the underlying issue is weak signal, router congestion, or a slow internet service.

Network reset is more disruptive than the checks above. Microsoft warns that it removes installed network adapters and their settings, which may mean reconfiguring network software or settings afterward. Microsoft says, “Using network reset should be the last step you try.”
Use Settings > Network & internet > Advanced network settings > Network reset if the option is available in your Windows version, and follow the on-screen prompts. Check Microsoft’s current Wi-Fi troubleshooting guidance before proceeding. Do not use a reset simply because a speed test is disappointing; it is intended for persistent network problems after simpler troubleshooting fails.
Choose the step that matches the symptom
| Step | Most relevant when | What it changes |
|---|---|---|
| Disable adapter power saving | Wi-Fi disconnects or behaves inconsistently | Stops Windows from turning off the adapter to save power |
| Check Windows and device updates | A driver, firmware, or compatibility issue is suspected | Updates software or device components; the speed effect is not guaranteed |
| Use DHCP | IP settings are incorrect or there is no reason to use a manual configuration | Lets the router or access point supply IP and DNS settings automatically |
| Flush DNS cache | There is a name-resolution problem | Clears cached DNS entries on the PC |
| Network reset | Persistent network trouble remains after simpler steps | Removes installed network adapters and their settings |
Do not confuse a data limit with a speed fix
A metered connection is for managing data use. Microsoft says it can limit background downloads, app updates, and syncing. That may help avoid unexpected data consumption on a capped plan, but it is not evidence that the Wi-Fi connection or internet service will become faster. See Microsoft’s explanation of metered connections.
How to tell whether a change helped
Change one relevant setting at a time, then check whether the original symptom improves. For a throughput comparison, use the same device and location and keep the test conditions as similar as possible; a single result cannot establish that a Windows setting caused a change. Wi-Fi performance also depends on the adapter, driver, access point, and network conditions, so consult the device manufacturer when the issue appears device-specific.
