You can take a bearish position on Bitcoin by shorting it on margin, selling Bitcoin futures, holding a short perpetual contract, buying put options, or buying an inverse Bitcoin ETF. These methods work differently: some borrow or use leverage, some expire or incur funding costs, and an inverse ETF targets a daily result rather than a multi-day inverse return. The right comparison is not just how much Bitcoin might fall, but how the position can lose money, what it costs to hold, and whether the product is available to you.
How the five methods differ
| Method | What creates the bearish exposure | What to check | Key risk |
|---|---|---|---|
| Spot-margin short | Borrow Bitcoin or use a margin facility, sell the exposure, then buy it back to close. | Borrow availability and rate, collateral, margin-call and liquidation rules, and regional eligibility. | A rising Bitcoin price increases the loss; a provider may liquidate the position under its terms. |
| Fixed-term futures | Sell a Bitcoin futures contract with a stated maturity. | Contract size, expiry, settlement, margin, difference from spot, and the cost of closing or rolling. | Leverage amplifies losses, and futures returns can diverge from spot Bitcoin returns. |
| Perpetual futures or swaps | Hold a short contract without a standard expiry. | Funding rate and payment interval, collateral, margin rules, platform terms, and regional access. | Funding, liquidation, platform and price-difference risks remain even without an expiry. |
| Put options | Buy the right to sell a specified underlying at a strike price before or at expiry, depending on contract terms. | Premium, strike, expiry, underlying asset, implied volatility, and settlement method. | The option can expire worthless; a Bitcoin-futures option is not automatically a put on spot Bitcoin. |
| Inverse Bitcoin ETF | Buy fund shares whose stated objective is to deliver an inverse daily result against an index. | Daily objective, fees, tracking, trading spreads, and brokerage availability. | Daily resetting and compounding can make multi-day performance differ from the simple inverse of Bitcoin’s total move. |
These are not interchangeable ways to “sell Bitcoin.” A margin position involves borrowed exposure, derivatives are contracts, an option has a defined payoff structure, and an inverse ETF is a fund share. Compare each product’s reference asset and loss mechanics before considering its headline leverage or daily target.
Shorting Bitcoin on margin
A margin short generally works in three stages: borrow Bitcoin or obtain equivalent short exposure through a margin facility, sell it, and later buy back the exposure to close. If the price falls, the buyback may cost less than the sale proceeds; if it rises, closing may cost more. Borrow charges and other account fees can affect the result.
Margin terms determine how much collateral is required, when a position can be liquidated, and whether a deficit can remain after liquidation. A short seller’s losses can be theoretically unlimited if the asset price keeps rising, since Bitcoin has no fixed upper price limit. That is different from the bounded premium loss of a purchased put. Do not assume a platform will wait for you to add collateral or close the position yourself.

- BITCOIN EXCLUSIVE, PHONE VERIFICATION: Bitkey is designed from the ground up exclusively for bitcoin — a dedicated hardware wallet for secure bitcoin storage. Approve transactions with a tap using your phone and NFC. No device screen is required.
- SELF-CUSTODY, NO EXCHANGE OR CUSTODIAN REQUIRED: You hold two of the three keys in the Bitkey system – one on your phone and one on your Bitkey device. The third is stored on Bitkey’s server and cannot move your bitcoin on its own.
- NO SEED PHRASE: Set up and use Bitkey without creating or storing a seed phrase.
- 2-of-3 MULTISIG: Three keys are stored separately across your phone, Bitkey device, and Bitkey’s server. Any two keys are required to move your bitcoin.
- BUILT-IN RECOVERY: Encrypted backup and recovery tools can help you regain access if you lose your phone or Bitkey device. You can also designate a Recovery Contact.
Shorting with futures or perpetual contracts
Fixed-term futures
A Bitcoin futures contract creates an obligation under the contract’s rules; selling one does not mean you own Bitcoin. Contracts specify features such as contract size, maturity and settlement. The value of a futures position can differ from spot Bitcoin because of the relationship between futures and spot prices. If a position is kept open by closing one contract and opening another, the price difference between maturities and trading costs can affect returns.
Futures margin is collateral, not a cap on possible losses. The CFTC warns that virtual-currency and futures markets can be highly volatile and that leverage amplifies gains and losses. A move against a position can trigger a margin call or liquidation according to the exchange or intermediary’s rules.

Perpetual futures and swaps
Perpetual contracts have no standard expiry. They commonly use funding payments between long and short holders to help keep the contract price aligned with the underlying market. Depending on the contract and market conditions, a short may pay funding or receive it. No expiry does not mean cost-free or risk-free: funding, margin requirements, liquidation rules, and a persistent difference between contract and spot prices still matter.
Access depends on the provider, product and jurisdiction. For example, a provider’s published terms may distinguish fixed-term futures offered to U.S. clients through a regulated U.S. affiliate from perpetual contracts available to eligible clients elsewhere. That is a provider-specific access statement, not a universal rule about what residents of any country may trade. Check current account eligibility and contract terms directly.

Using put options for downside exposure
A purchased put gives its buyer the right, under the contract terms, to sell the specified underlying at the strike price. The buyer typically risks the premium paid, while the option’s value before expiry also depends on factors such as the underlying price, time remaining and implied volatility. A put can lose value or expire worthless even if Bitcoin declines, particularly if the decline is not large or timely enough relative to the strike and premium.
Confirm what the option is written on. CME Group’s cryptocurrency-options materials describe Bitcoin options tied to Bitcoin futures, which in turn fluctuate relative to a spot-linked reference rate. The cited product descriptions distinguish financially settled Bitcoin Friday options from standard and Micro Bitcoin options that are physically settled by delivery of a futures contract—not spot Bitcoin. Settlement and contract specifications differ by product, so do not infer them from the word “Bitcoin” in a product name.

What an inverse Bitcoin ETF does—and does not do
ProShares Short Bitcoin ETF (BITI) is an example of an exchange-traded fund with a daily inverse target. Its summary prospectus dated September 28, 2026 says the fund, listed on NYSE Arca, seeks daily investment results before fees and expenses that are inverse (-1x) to the Bloomberg Bitcoin Index. The prospectus says the fund does not directly short Bitcoin and does not seek to meet its daily target for periods longer than one day.

A multi-day return can therefore differ in amount—and potentially direction—from the simple inverse of the index’s cumulative move over that period. Fees, tracking differences, trading spreads and the price at which shares trade also affect an investor’s result. Read the current prospectus and trading information; fund terms and costs can change.

How to compare the risks before choosing a method
- Underlying: Identify whether the exposure references spot Bitcoin, a futures contract, an index, or shares in a fund. Similar labels do not make these exposures equivalent.
- Loss and liquidation: Establish whether losses are limited to a paid premium or can grow as the price rises, and learn the exact collateral, margin-call and liquidation rules.
- Holding costs: Check borrowing charges, futures roll costs, perpetual funding, option premium, fund expenses and trading spreads as applicable.
- Time behavior: Note whether the position expires, must be rolled, incurs recurring funding, or resets its target daily.
- Access and protections: Verify current eligibility and legal status for the specific product, intermediary and jurisdiction. Protections applying to an exchange-traded derivative, fund share or spot platform may differ.
The CFTC distinguishes Bitcoin futures traded on CFTC-regulated exchanges from spot Bitcoin markets, which it says are not regulated by the CFTC or SEC except for limited exceptions. That distinction does not establish the legal status or protections of every platform, fund or product. Confirm the rules that apply to the specific instrument and account rather than treating “Bitcoin trading” as one regulatory category.
