Make a wildlife-friendlier Halloween display by removing loose synthetic webbing, marking glass with dense silhouettes, choosing natural or cardboard materials, placing and disposing of pumpkins carefully, and using warm, dim, shielded lights for short periods. These changes reduce entanglement, window collisions, ingestion, litter and night-time disturbance without giving up the Halloween atmosphere.
1. Skip synthetic outdoor spiderwebs and loose fibers
Do not stretch acrylic or other synthetic webbing across hedges, trees, fences or flight paths. Bats and birds can become tangled, then die from starvation, exposure or restricted blood flow. BirdLife Australia also identifies fishing line, polymer rope, string, yarn, cotton wool, balloons and fruit-tree netting as hazardous loose materials.
As Alison Hermance of WildCare told Audubon in 2024, “Spider web is designed by nature, and by the spider, to entangle and entrap.” Bat Conservation International similarly warns that stretchy artificial webs can endanger bats, birds and other wildlife, while BirdLife Australia says synthetic fake webs can cause serious injury or death through strangulation or restricted circulation.

- Keep any web effect indoors, away from open doors, vents and pet access.
- Use wall-mounted paper or cardboard web artwork outdoors instead of fibers that can catch on animals.
- Remove every strand, tie and fastener after the display; do not leave fragments in vegetation.
2. Turn windows into visible Halloween art
Transparent and reflective glass can be difficult for birds to detect, particularly when it reflects sky or vegetation. Cover the outside of decorated windows with dense, high-contrast ghosts, bats or witch silhouettes so the pane reads as a solid obstacle rather than open flight space.

Spacing that helps
BirdLife Australia recommends leaving no more than 5–10 centimetres between shapes. Apply decals or hang strings on the exterior where possible, following the product’s instructions and local weather limits. Reusable window clings provide a removable option; choose designs with strong contrast against the glass and background.
3. Choose natural or cardboard materials
Straw, untreated sticks and twigs, leaves and other organic garden waste can create texture without adding persistent plastic. Cardboard cut-outs are lightweight, recyclable where accepted locally and easy to store for next year.

Avoid lifelike plastic fruits, nuts and berries near trees or feeding areas. Birds may investigate them, attempt to ingest pieces or pull them into nests. BirdLife Australia estimates that about 30% of Australian bird nests incorporate human-made materials; that estimate is specific to Australia and comes from scientists, but it illustrates why every loose decoration should be treated as potential nesting material.

End-of-display check
- Collect twine, tape, zip ties, glitter, foam and small cut-offs.
- Separate clean cardboard for recycling where your council accepts it; compost suitable untreated plant matter.
- Do not leave loose decorations in hedges, gutters or trees after Halloween.
4. Place pumpkins with wildlife and pets in mind
Set pumpkins away from roads, driveways and reflective glass, where animals may be exposed to traffic or collision hazards. Keep them out of reach of household pets, whose diets and tolerances differ from wildlife.

Never leave spoiled, painted, glittered or chemically treated pumpkins where animals can reach them. After the display, compost pumpkins through an appropriate household or municipal service, or dispose of them according to local waste rules. Wildlife diets and disease risks vary by species and location, so pumpkin should not be presented as a universal wildlife food.

Use amber, orange, red or another warm LED tone rather than blue, white or cool light. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service identifies blue, white and cooler LEDs as least favorable for birds and wildlife. Keep brightness low, point fixtures downward and shield the beam so it does not spill into trees or the sky.

Reduce exposure time
- Install a timer or motion sensor instead of leaving the display on continuously.
- Turn lights off before household bedtime and avoid all-night operation.
- Keep fixtures away from bat roosts, feeding sites, waterways and known travel corridors, following guidance from the Bat Conservation Trust and Australia’s Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water.
Warm color does not make an excessively bright or poorly aimed light harmless; duration, intensity and location still matter, especially for nocturnal species.

A final wildlife-safety walk-through
- Can a bird, bat or small mammal fly or walk into any strand, loop or fine cord?
- Are decorated windows covered with high-contrast shapes spaced no more than 5–10 cm apart?
- Are all materials untreated, secured and unlikely to be mistaken for food?
- Are pumpkins inaccessible to pets, away from traffic and removed promptly when spoiled?
- Are lights warm, dim, aimed down, shielded and switched off before bed?
