If Windows 11 does not fit the monitor correctly, first identify the symptom. A desktop that is cut off at the edges usually has overscan; a desktop surrounded by black borders may have underscan or an incompatible display mode. Text and icons that are simply too large are usually a Windows scaling issue.
Work through these five methods in order. Start with Windows’ recommended display mode, then check scaling, multi-monitor settings, graphics-driver scaling, and finally the monitor or TV’s own picture controls.
1. Set the monitor to its recommended resolution
Windows 11 normally detects the monitor’s native resolution. Using that mode gives the clearest image and is the best first step when the picture looks stretched, blurry, too small, or incorrectly sized.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- Right-click an empty area of the desktop and select Display settings. You can also open Start > Settings > System > Display.
- If more than one screen is connected, select the affected monitor in the display diagram.
- Under Scale & layout, open Display resolution.
- Choose the resolution marked (Recommended).
- When Windows asks whether to keep the setting, select Keep changes.
Do not keep lowering the resolution until the image happens to fit. A lower-than-native resolution can produce blur, stretching, a centered image, or black borders. It also does not reliably correct overscan.

If the resolution keeps changing after a restart, reconnect, or Windows update, update the graphics driver. Check Start > Settings > Windows Update > Check for updates. A faulty or incompatible display driver is one possible reason Windows loses the selected display mode.
2. Adjust Windows 11 scaling
Use scaling when the entire desktop is visible but text, icons, and app controls are too large or too small. Scaling changes the size of interface elements; it does not recover desktop edges that are being cut off by a TV or GPU.
- Open Start > Settings > System > Display.
- Select the monitor you want to change.
- Under Scale & layout, open Scale.
- Choose the percentage marked (Recommended), or try another percentage and check the result.
Scaling is applied per display. This matters when a laptop screen and an external monitor use different resolutions or scaling percentages. Select the external monitor before changing the value; otherwise you may change the laptop panel instead.

For example, if a 4K external display makes desktop controls look unusually small, a higher scaling value may make them comfortable to use. If the taskbar is missing at the bottom or window borders are outside the screen, however, changing Scale is unlikely to solve the problem. That points to overscan or display-side scaling.
3. Correct the multi-monitor display mode
A wrong projection mode can make Windows use an unsuitable resolution or show the same image on two screens with different capabilities.

Press Windows key + P and choose the mode you need:
| Mode | What it does | When to use it |
|---|---|---|
| PC screen only | Uses the primary PC display | When troubleshooting an external monitor or TV |
| Duplicate | Shows the same image on both displays | For presentations or mirroring; both screens may need a compatible mode |
| Extend | Creates one desktop across separate displays | Usually best for different monitor resolutions |
| Second screen only | Turns off the PC’s built-in or primary screen | When using only the external monitor |
Extend is generally the right choice when two monitors have different native resolutions. Duplicate mode can force both displays into a common resolution, which may make one screen blurry or incorrectly sized.

On a Windows 11 laptop, the options Remember window locations based on monitor connection and Minimize windows when a monitor is disconnected can help keep apps organized after docking. They affect window placement, not overscan or the size of the rendered image.
4. Adjust scaling in the graphics software
If the taskbar, desktop icons, or window edges are cut off over HDMI, the graphics adapter may be scaling the image incorrectly. This is especially common when a PC is connected to a television, AV receiver, dock, or HDMI adapter.

AMD Radeon graphics
AMD provides a specific HDMI scaling control:
- Select Start and type AMD Software.
- Open AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition.
- Use its search box to find Display.
- Select Display Settings.
- If necessary, choose the affected display.
- Adjust the HDMI Scaling slider until the entire desktop fits.
AMD identifies 0% as the default HDMI Scaling position. The control may be unavailable until Windows is using the monitor’s native resolution and refresh rate, so set those in Display settings first.
NVIDIA and Intel systems use different applications, names, and available controls. Their options also depend on the graphics driver, connection type, monitor, and whether a dock or adapter is in the signal path. Do not expect to find AMD’s exact HDMI Scaling slider on every Windows 11 computer.
If the control is missing, temporarily connect the display directly to the PC, remove an HDMI adapter or receiver, and confirm the recommended resolution and refresh rate. Those steps can reveal whether an intermediate device is reporting incorrect display capabilities.
5. Change the monitor or TV’s picture-size setting
A monitor or television can crop the picture after Windows has rendered it correctly. This is display-side overscan. It cannot be fixed with Windows Scale, display orientation, or by dragging monitor icons into a different arrangement.
Open the monitor or TV’s physical menu or remote-control menu and look for settings such as:

Choose Auto, Just Scan, Screen Fit, or the equivalent mode that displays the full signal. Names vary by manufacturer and model. On some televisions, changing the HDMI input label to PC also changes how the signal is processed, but the exact behavior depends on the TV.
Typical signs of display-side overscan include a partially hidden taskbar, icons missing beyond the edges, and window borders cut off evenly on all sides. If the image is uniformly too large or too small while Windows’ resolution is correct, inspect the display menu rather than repeatedly changing Windows scaling.

Reset the graphics display pipeline
Press Ctrl + Shift + Windows key + B. The screen may briefly go black or flicker, and Windows may play a short alert sound. This resets the graphics driver/display pipeline without changing resolution, scaling, refresh rate, or the monitor’s own settings.
Use Microsoft’s external-display wallpaper workaround
If the external desktop or wallpaper is cut off or appears unusually small after connecting a monitor with a different resolution:
- Go to Start > Settings > System > Display.
- Select the external display.
- Under Display resolution, choose a different resolution.
- When the Keep these display settings? prompt appears, select Revert.
If you do not choose an option, Windows automatically reverts. This refreshes the display configuration and can correct a Windows external-wallpaper sizing problem.

Check the connection path
Disconnect an HDMI switch, dock, receiver, or adapter and connect the monitor directly to the computer if possible. These devices can report a different resolution, refresh rate, or overscan capability. Also test another HDMI cable or input. If only one input crops the image, the input’s picture mode is a likely cause.
What not to change first
- Do not set Scale to 100% automatically. That changes text and app size, not usually the visible image area.
- Do not keep choosing lower resolutions. Use the option marked Recommended unless you have a specific reason not to.
- Do not change orientation or monitor arrangement to fix cropping. Those settings control portrait/landscape orientation and desktop positions, not overscan.
- Do not look for a universal Windows 11 overscan switch. The correction may be in AMD, NVIDIA, or Intel software—or in the monitor or TV menu.
FAQ
Why is part of my Windows 11 screen cut off?
The most likely causes are HDMI overscan in the TV or monitor, GPU scaling, or an HDMI adapter or dock reporting an unsuitable display mode. Set the recommended Windows resolution, then check the display’s Picture Size or Screen Fit setting and the graphics software’s scaling controls.
Will changing Windows 11 Scale make the picture fit the monitor?
Only when the problem is that text and controls are too large or too small. Scale does not normally restore desktop edges hidden by overscan. For cropped edges, check GPU scaling and the monitor or TV’s picture-size setting.
Why is the resolution option greyed out or unavailable in AMD Software?
AMD says HDMI Scaling may require the display’s native resolution and refresh rate. Set both in Windows first. A dock, receiver, adapter, or unusual connection can also prevent the expected control from appearing.
Should I use Duplicate or Extend with two monitors?
Use Extend when the monitors have different native resolutions. Duplicate makes both displays show the same content and may force them into a common compatible resolution, reducing image quality on one screen.
What is the fastest display reset in Windows 11?
Press Ctrl + Shift + Windows key + B. It resets the graphics display pipeline, but it does not change your resolution, scaling, refresh rate, or monitor menu settings.
The Bottom Line
For a normal monitor, select the Recommended resolution and adjust Scale only for text and app size. For a cropped HDMI picture, leave Windows at the recommended mode and correct scaling in the GPU software or set the monitor/TV to Auto, Just Scan, or its equivalent. If the problem appears only after docking or connecting another display, check the projection mode and the adapter or dock as well.
