Internet Download Manager (IDM) cannot download torrent content. Tonec’s current FAQ says that IDM does not support torrents, so it cannot join a BitTorrent swarm, connect to peers or trackers, or seed files.
What IDM can download is the .torrent metadata file when that file is available through a normal HTTP or HTTPS URL. You must then open the downloaded file with a BitTorrent client. Magnet links are different: they are not files, and IDM has no documented method for handling magnet: URLs.
What these methods actually download
Each method below downloads the small .torrent file itself. It does not download the movies, software, games, or other data described by that file.

Look for a direct download address ending in .torrent, or use a site’s download option that returns the actual torrent file. A page URL, tracker page, search result, or magnet URI is not the same thing.

1. Let IDM intercept the browser download
This is the normal method when a website exposes a direct .torrent download link.
- Open the direct torrent-file link in a supported browser.
- When IDM detects the download, review the Download File Info dialog.
- Choose a destination folder.
- Click Start Download to begin immediately, or Download Later to add it to IDM without starting it.
If IDM does not intercept the file, check whether the extension is configured:
Options → File Types
Make sure TORRENT is included in IDM’s file-extension list. Browser integration must also be enabled under:

Options → General
After changing browser integration, restart the browser. You can hold Ctrl while clicking a download link to force IDM to take over, or hold Alt to let the browser handle the download. These modifier keys can be changed through Options → General → Keys.
2. Use “Download with IDM” from the browser menu
If automatic interception fails, right-click the direct .torrent hyperlink and select Download with IDM.

- Find the actual link to the torrent file.
- Right-click that link.
- Select Download with IDM.
- Confirm the location and select Start Download.
This menu item depends on the IDM browser integration module. If it is missing, install or enable the official IDM integration module and check the browser’s extensions page. Restart the browser after changing the integration settings.
Be careful with extensions claiming to be IDM integrations in the Chrome Web Store, Mozilla Add-ons, or Microsoft Store. Tonec warns about third-party extensions that impersonate IDM or send IDM command-line calls. Use the integration supplied through IDM’s official installation and support channels.
3. Download the torrent through clipboard monitoring
IDM can monitor the clipboard for valid downloadable URLs. This is useful when the direct torrent URL is visible but clicking it launches another application or does not trigger IDM.
- Copy the direct HTTP or HTTPS URL of the
.torrentfile. - Wait for IDM to detect the copied URL.
- Review the download prompt.
- Click OK to start the download.
For example, a URL such as https://example.com/downloads/linux-image.torrent may be suitable. Copying https://example.com/torrents, a search-page address, or a magnet: URI is not equivalent. IDM’s clipboard feature handles downloadable file URLs; it does not convert magnet links into torrent downloads.
4. Add the direct URL manually
You can bypass browser integration altogether from IDM’s main window.

- Open IDM.
- Click Add URL.
- Paste the direct HTTP or HTTPS URL for the
.torrentfile. - If the server requires credentials, select Use authorization and enter them.
- Confirm the address and review the Download File Info dialog.
- Click Start/Resume Download.
This method downloads only the URL supplied. It does not interpret a torrent file, contact peers, or turn a magnet link into a BitTorrent job. If IDM saves an HTML page instead of a small torrent file, the address probably points to a web page rather than the file endpoint. Authentication or session cookies may also be required.

5. Drag the torrent link into IDM
IDM can accept hyperlinks dragged from a browser into its main window or download basket.
- Open the page containing the direct
.torrenthyperlink. - Click and hold the hyperlink.
- Drag it into the IDM main window or the IDM drop target.
- Release it and confirm the download details.
If the drop target is hidden, enable it through:
Tasks → Show drop target
This works with a downloadable hyperlink. Dragging a magnet URI does not give IDM torrent support; it must be opened by a BitTorrent client.
Optional: download the file from the command line
IDM also documents command-line downloading for direct file URLs. For example:

The switches that modify a download require /d URL. A command such as IDMan.exe /d "magnet:?xt=..." does not add BitTorrent capability; the command line accepts downloadable file URLs, not magnet jobs.

Common problems
The link opens in a torrent client instead of IDM
It is probably a magnet link, or the browser has associated .torrent files with a torrent application. IDM cannot download torrent payloads. Find a direct HTTP/HTTPS link to the .torrent metadata file and send that link to IDM.
There is no “Download with IDM” option
The IDM integration module may be missing, disabled, or not working in that browser. Enable the official integration and restart the browser. You can still use Add URL, clipboard monitoring, or drag and drop if you have the direct file URL.
Automatic interception does not work, but right-click does
The .torrent extension may not be included in IDM’s configured file list. Check Options → File Types. Also verify integration under Options → General.
“Download Later” seems not to do anything
That button intentionally adds the URL to IDM’s list without starting the transfer. Start it later from the IDM queue.

Resume does not work after an interruption
IDM can resume from the saved position only when the remote server supports resumed downloads. If the server does not support resume, IDM may need to restart the file.

IDM downloads an HTML document
The URL is likely a landing page, login page, or tracker page rather than the torrent file. Use the site’s direct torrent download URL. If authentication is needed, use Use authorization in IDM’s manual URL dialog.
What happens after IDM downloads the file?
- Open the folder where IDM saved the
.torrentfile. - Open the file with your installed BitTorrent client.
- Review the files, save location, and sharing settings in that client.
- Start the torrent only if you trust its source and have the legal right to download and share its contents.
IDM’s job ends when the metadata file is saved. The BitTorrent client handles tracker communication, peer connections, downloading, uploading, and seeding.
FAQ
Can IDM download torrent files?
IDM can download a direct .torrent metadata file over HTTP or HTTPS. It cannot download the content represented by that file or participate in a BitTorrent swarm.
Can I download a magnet link with IDM?
No. Magnet links are not normal downloadable files, and IDM has no documented magnet-link workflow. Open the magnet link with a compatible BitTorrent client.
Why does adding TORRENT to IDM’s file types not enable torrent support?
The extension list controls which browser downloads IDM can intercept. It allows IDM to save the .torrent file itself; it does not add peer-to-peer torrent functionality.
Can IDM download a torrent file from a password-protected page?
Possibly, if you have the direct file URL and the server accepts credentials that IDM can provide. In Add URL, select Use authorization. IDM cannot turn a login page or tracker page into a torrent file.
Does IDM support torrent downloading on Windows 11?
Tonec lists Windows 11 among IDM’s supported operating systems. That support does not change IDM’s torrent limitation: IDM still downloads only ordinary file URLs, including direct .torrent files.
The Bottom Line
The accurate answer is narrower than the title suggests: IDM provides five practical ways to save a direct .torrent file—browser interception, the right-click menu, clipboard monitoring, Add URL, and drag and drop. It does not download torrent contents or handle magnet links. Use a BitTorrent client for the actual peer-to-peer transfer.
