The best waterproof point-and-shoot depends on more than its depth rating. For a feature-rich compact with 4K video, consider the OM SYSTEM Tough TG-7; for built-in macro lighting, the RICOH WG-80 stands out; and the KODAK PIXPRO WPZ2 is a simpler option with Wi-Fi and 1080p video. The PENTAX WG-1000 and RICOH WG-90 are also worth considering, but their specifications here rely on specialist buying guides rather than confirmed manufacturer pages. This is a specification-based shortlist, not a ranking from hands-on testing.

Which waterproof point-and-shoot camera should you choose?

Choose by the photos and conditions you expect, not by depth rating alone. The TG-7 offers the broadest documented feature set in this shortlist, including 4K video and close focusing. The WG-80’s adjustable ring light is useful for close-up subjects, while the WPZ2 covers basic adventure use with a 4× optical zoom and Wi-Fi. The WG-1000 and WG-90 may suit buyers looking for other rugged options, but confirm their specifications and availability with the manufacturer or a local seller before buying.

  • For 4K video and a versatile compact: OM SYSTEM Tough TG-7.
  • For illuminated macro subjects: RICOH WG-80.
  • For straightforward stills, Wi-Fi and 1080p video: KODAK PIXPRO WPZ2.
  • For the WG-1000 or WG-90: verify model details and local stock before treating reported specifications as settled.

Top five waterproof compact cameras

The figures below are manufacturer specifications where a primary product source is available. For the WG-1000 and WG-90, the listed details come from secondary buying guides and should be verified against current manufacturer information. No current regional prices or stock are established here.

What each camera is best suited for

OM SYSTEM Tough TG-7: the most versatile documented option

The TG-7 combines a 25–100 mm equivalent 4× optical zoom with close focusing to about 1 cm, making it suited to both general travel scenes and small subjects. Its 4K/30p video is the highest stated video resolution among the models with manufacturer-backed details in this shortlist. OM SYSTEM lists waterproofing to 15 m, dust protection and freeze resistance to −10°C. Those ratings describe specified conditions, not immunity from water or impact damage.

For use beyond the body’s own depth rating, OM SYSTEM says the separately sold PT-059 housing supports underwater photography to 45 m. The housing is a distinct purchase; its rating should not be confused with the camera body’s 15 m rating. Check that the housing is compatible with the TG-7 and follow its own use instructions.

RICOH WG-80: macro work with built-in light

The WG-80’s defining feature is its front ring light, whose five adjustable brightness levels can illuminate close-up subjects. Ricoh specifies waterproofing to 14 m for up to two hours, along with 1.6 m shock resistance, freeze resistance to −10°C and crush resistance up to 100 kgf. These are specified product-test claims; they do not guarantee that a particular camera will avoid damage.

Digital Camera World reports a 20 m depth rating, 2 m shock resistance, −10°C freeze resistance and 1080p/30 video for the WG-1000. TechRadar reports that the WG-90 has a 14 m waterproof rating, 1.6 m shock resistance, 5× optical zoom, six macro LEDs and video up to 1080p/30. Manufacturer verification, current price and regional availability are not established here. How to choose the best waterproof camera for your plans

Match the depth rating to the activity

For snorkeling or shallow-water photography, a camera’s body rating may be sufficient if your intended use stays within the manufacturer’s limits. For deeper use, do not assume that one model’s rating or accessory applies to another. The TG-7’s 45 m figure, for example, applies to the separately sold PT-059 housing—not to the un-housed camera body.

Decide whether video or close-ups matter more

If 4K is important, the TG-7 is the only model in this shortlist with a manufacturer-listed 4K/30p specification. If you mainly photograph small objects, compare the TG-7’s close focusing with the WG-80’s adjustable ring light and the WG-90’s reported macro LEDs, while keeping the WG-90’s secondary-source status in mind. The WPZ2 tops out at 1080p video according to its product page.

Check everyday usability and the full kit

  • Confirm that the camera’s zoom range suits your subjects; optical zoom ranges are stated for the TG-7, WPZ2 and WG-90 in the sources used here.
  • Check storage compatibility in the manufacturer’s documentation. The WPZ2 supports microSD cards; confirm supported card details before buying one.
  • Compare battery expectations with your own use. The WPZ2’s approximately 200-shot figure is a CIPA-standard estimate.
  • Check local price, stock, warranty terms and service options before choosing. These vary by country and are not established for this comparison.
  • Factor in accessories. The TG-7’s PT-059 housing is sold separately and is relevant to buyers who need the housing’s stated depth support.

Can you take a compact camera underwater?

Yes, if the specific camera is rated for the conditions and is correctly prepared and maintained. A depth rating is not a blanket guarantee against water damage: seal condition, closure, prior impact, care and temperature can matter. Read the exact model’s manual before entering the water, and do not open a battery or card compartment while the camera is wet.

After underwater use, follow that camera’s instructions for rinsing, drying and checking its seals. Do not transfer one manufacturer’s maintenance schedule to another camera. For example, Fujifilm’s FinePix XP140 manual gives care directions for that model, including rinsing and drying after underwater use and annual seal replacement; those directions are not a substitute for the manual supplied with any of the five cameras above.
