Yes, you can use a VPN with an Xbox, but the cited support documentation does not offer a native VPN app for the console. Connect through a VPN-enabled router or share a VPN connection from a Windows PC. Smart DNS is another option for supported streaming uses, but it does not encrypt traffic or hide your IP address.
For a practical shortlist, consider NordVPN for distant-server play, ExpressVPN for its Vienna download result in one published test, Proton VPN as a privacy-oriented alternative, and Private Internet Access as a budget-oriented option. These distinctions come from Gizmodo’s September 2026 tests and editorial assessment—not a promise of performance on your connection. One listed service is omitted because it is a paid-client brand.
Which VPNs are worth considering for Xbox?
These four options have different strengths in the available comparison. Gizmodo’s September 28, 2026 test used a Windows 11 PC in Europe on a 190.36 Mbps connection with a 10 ms baseline ping. Its provider measurements used Vienna VPN servers; the cloud-gaming latency figures came from Xbox Cloud Gaming stream statistics in a browser. They are results from that test setup, not predictions for every home network or Xbox game.

All test measurements in the table are Gizmodo’s 2026 results using Vienna servers, except NordVPN’s separately identified Japan ping result. A lower ping in one test does not mean a service will lower your ping: server distance, your ISP’s routing, congestion, and the selected VPN server all affect the result. Gizmodo’s Vienna pings ranged from 20 to 38 ms, compared with its 10 ms baseline.

Can you install a VPN directly on an Xbox?
The cited support pages do not describe installing a VPN app on Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, or Xbox 360. NordVPN Support says, “Video gaming consoles do not support built-in VPN functionality,” and recommends a VPN-configured router or a Windows device sharing a VPN-protected connection. That is the practical distinction: the Xbox uses a network connection provided by another device rather than running the VPN itself.
Choose a connection method
VPN-enabled router: cover the console through your home network
Configure a compatible router to connect to your VPN, then connect the Xbox to that router’s network. This avoids relying on a PC that must stay on and share its connection. Router models and VPN support vary, so confirm compatibility with both the router and VPN provider before buying or changing equipment.

Windows PC sharing: use a device you already have
Connect a Windows PC to the VPN and share that connection with the Xbox, either over a Windows hotspot or a supported wired connection. Keep the PC connected and sharing while you play. NordVPN documents a VPN-protected Windows hotspot as a console method; exact Windows labels and steps can vary by version and network adapter.

Smart DNS changes DNS handling to enable certain supported content or streaming setups; it does not route all console traffic through an encrypted VPN tunnel. ExpressVPN describes MediaStreamer as changing DNS for streaming “without encryption or IP masking.” PIA also provides Xbox One Smart DNS instructions. Availability and model support depend on the service.

How to connect an Xbox using a VPN router
- Check that your router supports VPN connections and that your chosen VPN provides setup instructions for that router. Do this before purchasing hardware.
- Configure the VPN connection on the router using the provider’s current instructions, then verify that the router reports an active VPN connection.
- Connect the Xbox to the router’s Wi-Fi network or Ethernet connection.
- On the Xbox, open the network settings and run the console’s network test. If it cannot connect, first confirm that other devices can reach the internet through the router, then review the router’s VPN status and configuration.
How to share a VPN connection from Windows
- Connect the Windows PC to the VPN and confirm that the PC itself has internet access.
- Enable a Windows mobile hotspot or another supported connection-sharing method. Windows settings and labels vary by version.
- Connect the Xbox to the shared network. For a hotspot, select the PC’s Wi-Fi network from the Xbox network settings and enter its password.
- Run the Xbox network test. If it fails, check that Windows sharing is active, the VPN remains connected, and the PC’s internet connection works without the console.
How to use Smart DNS where the service supports it
Use this route only if you want the provider’s supported DNS-based streaming function and accept that it is not a VPN tunnel. Follow the provider’s current model-specific instructions; menu wording can vary across Xbox system versions.
- Open the provider’s Smart DNS setup page and confirm it supports your Xbox model and intended use.
- Obtain the DNS settings using the provider’s prescribed account or activation process.
- On Xbox, open network settings and enter the DNS values in the advanced network configuration.
- Apply the settings and test the supported streaming service. If it does not work, restore automatic DNS or follow the provider’s troubleshooting instructions.
ExpressVPN’s cited instructions cover MediaStreamer on Xbox One and Xbox 360. PIA’s cited guide covers Xbox One and was dated December 20, 2021, so check PIA’s current support documentation before following it. These sources do not establish matching Smart DNS instructions for every Xbox generation or provider.

Will a VPN reduce Xbox lag?
Do not choose a VPN on the assumption that it will reduce latency. A VPN adds a routing step and can increase ping. In Gizmodo’s 2026 Vienna test, all four listed services had higher ping than its 10 ms baseline, with readings from 21 to 38 ms; the separate lowest Vienna reading among these four was not necessarily the best route for every player. A VPN might help only when your ordinary ISP route is unusually poor and the VPN creates a better path to the game server.
Test from your own location with a nearby VPN server, and compare the same game, server region, and network conditions with and without the VPN. For competitive play, prioritize the lowest stable latency you actually measure over a provider’s general speed claims.

Xbox generation and regional-access caveats
The available model-specific setup evidence is uneven: ExpressVPN’s MediaStreamer instructions name Xbox One and Xbox 360; PIA’s cited Smart DNS guide names Xbox One; NordVPN describes console support generally. The comparison does not verify a procedure for every provider on Xbox Series X|S or every generation listed in the title. Check current provider instructions for your exact model before setup.
Do not assume a VPN makes every region-specific game, streaming service, subscription, or cloud-gaming feature available. Follow Microsoft policies, game terms, and service restrictions. ExpressVPN advises users to comply with Xbox policies and game terms; Gizmodo also notes Microsoft’s terms do not allow misrepresenting location in its cloud-gaming discussion.
