Roku does not support installing VPN apps. To use a VPN with a Roku player or TV, connect it to a network protected by a VPN—usually through a compatible router or a Windows computer sharing its VPN connection. The five options below differ in how clearly their Roku setup is documented and what independent streaming reviews have tested; none guarantees access to a particular streaming catalog.
How a VPN works with Roku
A VPN provider’s app cannot be installed directly on Roku. Instead, the router or computer handles the VPN connection, and Roku joins the resulting protected network. This can cover other devices on that network too, depending on how the router or hotspot is configured.
The main choices are a VPN-compatible router, dedicated VPN router hardware, or a Windows virtual router or hotspot. Router setup depends on the router’s model, firmware, and provider support. A computer-based setup avoids buying dedicated router hardware, but the computer must remain part of the connection.

Choose the setup before choosing the VPN
Use a VPN-compatible router
This is the simplest ongoing arrangement when your router supports a provider’s VPN configuration: connect Roku to that router’s network. Before buying or changing equipment, check both the router manufacturer’s documentation and the VPN provider’s current supported models, firmware, and configuration steps. Router compatibility is model- and firmware-specific.
A dedicated VPN router is another possibility, but it is optional, not a requirement for every household. Check the exact model, subscription requirements, and compatibility before purchase; product availability and specifications can change.

Share a Windows computer’s VPN connection
A Windows virtual router or mobile hotspot can provide a VPN-protected Wi-Fi network without a dedicated VPN router. The setup takes more configuration, and Roku depends on the computer remaining available and connected. Provider instructions may change as Windows and VPN apps are updated.

- Enable Windows mobile hotspot and configure connection sharing so the hotspot uses the VPN connection. Follow the provider’s current instructions for the Windows version and app you have.
- Connect Roku to the hotspot’s Wi-Fi network and check that the VPN connection is active on the computer.
NordVPN also documents sharing a wireless VPN connection from Windows for Roku. Use the current provider support steps rather than assuming the settings or labels are identical across apps and Windows versions.

Roku account location and remote-app discovery
ExpressVPN advises that the Roku account location should match the VPN router location. Its setup guide says Roku account location is based on the IP address used when the account is created. If you are configuring a new account, review that guidance before setup; a VPN does not override a streaming service’s account, region, or plan rules.
A VPN can also affect the Roku mobile app’s ability to find a nearby device. Roku Support Canada’s troubleshooting guidance, last updated August 24, 2026, says: “Some VPN applications route all traffic through the virtual network, causing your Roku device to not be visible.” If the phone or tablet cannot find Roku, confirm both devices are on the same local network and check whether router isolation settings are preventing communication. Temporarily disconnecting the phone’s VPN can help determine whether VPN routing is the cause.

What VPN protection does—and does not—promise
Putting Roku behind a VPN changes the network path used by the device; it does not guarantee that a streaming app will work, unlock a specific catalog, or satisfy the service’s location and account requirements. Streaming services can change VPN detection and regional access rules. Performance also depends on the provider, selected server, home network, Roku setup, and streaming service. Independent review results are useful comparisons, not universal outcomes.
For the most practical choice, start with the router or hotspot you can actually configure. Then compare each provider’s current setup documentation and router support, and treat streaming tests as limited evidence rather than a promise for your location.
