On VLC Desktop, press Space to play or pause, F for fullscreen, M to mute, and Shift+Left or Shift+Right to jump backward or forward. These are useful defaults documented for VLC Desktop 3.0—not guaranteed bindings for every version, operating system, or customized setup.
Five VLC Desktop shortcuts to know
VideoLAN’s VLC Desktop 3.0 hotkey reference lists the following controls:
| Shortcut | What it does |
|---|---|
| Space | Toggles play and pause for the current media. |
| F | Enters fullscreen. |
| M | Toggles mute. |
| Shift+Left | Jumps backward. |
| Shift+Right | Jumps forward. |
The hotkey page describes shortcuts as keys you can use “even if VLC does not have the focus.” That is VideoLAN’s documented behavior; if a shortcut does not work on your computer, check the binding in your installed version’s preferences.
How to enter and leave fullscreen
Press F to enter fullscreen and Esc to leave it, as listed in VideoLAN’s desktop hotkey reference. If Esc has been remapped or you prefer the mouse, right-click the video and choose Leave Full Screen. The same exit options are documented in VideoLAN’s desktop video guide.

Check or change a shortcut if it behaves differently
These are documented VLC Desktop 3.0 defaults. Your bindings may differ because you use another release or operating system, or because the shortcuts were customized. VideoLAN’s Preferences guide identifies a Hotkeys section for keyboard shortcuts and notes that preferences can be viewed in simple or advanced form. Open Preferences in VLC and look under Hotkeys to inspect the bindings in your installation.
Desktop shortcuts are not mobile gestures
The shortcuts above are for VLC Desktop. The Android documentation describes screen swipes for seeking and adjusting volume or brightness, while the iOS documentation describes touch gestures for playback. Those mobile guides do not establish that desktop keyboard defaults apply on phones or tablets: see VideoLAN’s Android guide and iOS guide for the relevant touch controls.
