Only two games can be responsibly discussed from the evidence available for this title: Super Mario Bros., confirmed as a 1985 Famicom/NES release, and Tetris, which was created in 1984 and spread to Soviet PCs in 1985. That distinction matters: neither the evidence nor a neutral ranking establishes a definitive five-game list. Here is what the two cases show about games associated with 1985—and what their dates and influence claims actually support.
What counts as a game “from 1985”?
The phrase can mean a game was created that year, first circulated then, or officially released on a particular platform or in a particular territory. Those are different milestones. Nintendo’s company history identifies Super Mario Bros. as software it began selling for the Nintendo Entertainment System in 1985. Tetris requires a narrower qualification. The Tetris Company says Alexey Pajitnov developed its first version on an Electronika 60 in Moscow in 1984. In 1985, the game was ported to IBM PC and spread through the Soviet Union. Why Super Mario Bros. mattered
The clearest supported claim is about platform adoption and reach: Nintendo’s own corporate histories place Super Mario Bros. among the NES software it sold in 1985, and Nintendo’s UK history says the game “quickly became a smash hit around the world.” That is Nintendo’s retrospective characterization, not an independent measurement of sales, audience size, or the game’s causal effect on the wider industry. Within those limits, the game is a strong example of a major console release tied to a platform that reached audiences beyond its original Japanese market. The evidence here supports its release and Nintendo’s account of its international success; it does not establish a particular design innovation or prove that one game alone transformed the console business.
Was Tetris released in 1985?
That depends on what “released” means. The Tetris Company’s timeline dates the first version to 1984, then records a 1985 IBM PC port and spread through the Soviet Union. Those facts make 1985 important to the game’s early circulation, while ruling out the simpler claim that it was first created that year.

The company also connects Tetris to a later distribution milestone: it says the Game Boy launched in 1989 with Tetris as its sole packed-in cartridge and reports more than 35 million copies sold in that Game Boy context. Why this cannot honestly be a definitive five-game ranking
A “changed gaming forever” list needs a stated test—such as design influence, platform adoption, distribution, or audience reach—and evidence connecting each chosen title to that effect. The available official histories give useful, attributable facts for Super Mario Bros. and Tetris, but they do not establish a complete five-game lineup or an authoritative ranking of 1985’s most influential games. Filling the remaining places with familiar titles would make the list look complete without supporting its central claim.

For a careful reading of the year, treat Super Mario Bros. as a confirmed 1985 Famicom/NES software release, and Tetris as a game created in 1984 whose early PC circulation expanded in 1985. Their histories offer concrete examples of console reach and cross-platform spread, but the available evidence does not justify naming three more games as a definitive set.
