There is no single best vacation camera for every trip. For a small, stabilized camera suited to outdoor travel, consider the OM System OM-5 Mark II; for high-resolution detail, the Fujifilm X-T50 with its 16–50mm kit lens; and for a pocketable city-walk camera, the fixed-lens Ricoh GR IV. The Sony a6700 is a strong stills-and-video hybrid, while the Fujifilm X-M5 prioritizes a compact mirrorless kit at the cost of a viewfinder and in-body stabilization.
How to choose a vacation camera
Think about the camera you will actually carry, not just its sensor resolution or body size. A pocketable fixed-lens model is convenient for street scenes but cannot zoom or accept another lens. An interchangeable-lens camera gives you more options, yet the lens you pack changes the kit’s size and capabilities.
- For outdoor trips: Stabilization can help with handheld shots, and weather sealing can add practical protection. Weather-sealed does not mean waterproof.
- For people and fleeting moments: Autofocus matters, especially for moving subjects. One guide flags tracking limitations on the X-T50.
- For photos and video: Check the specific video features and the lens you plan to use; a generic “good video” label does not tell you what the camera can record.
- For comfort: A small grip or a missing viewfinder may matter more over a full day than a spec-sheet advantage.
- For value: Compare the complete kit, including lens, rather than body-only prices. Current price and availability depend on region and retailer.
The five recommendations below combine category picks from guides published or updated in 2026; they are not a single publisher’s universal ranking or a claim of testing by this writer.
Five vacation camera picks
| Camera and role | Why it may suit your trip | Trade-off to consider |
|---|---|---|
| OM System OM-5 Mark II — all-around weather-ready kit | 20.4MP Micro Four Thirds sensor, in-body image stabilization, a compact lens range, and 4K/30p video; a practical fit for handheld outdoor travel. | Video features are basic and the grip is small. It is not the choice here for highest resolution or strongest low-light performance. |
| Fujifilm X-T50 with 16–50mm lens — high-resolution kit | 40MP stabilized APS-C body with a versatile kit lens intended for travel. | Autofocus tracking may struggle, the viewfinder is small, and battery life is a limitation. |
| Sony a6700 — stills-and-video hybrid | 26MP APS-C sensor, strong autofocus for stills and video, 4K recording, and a useful selection of relatively compact lenses. | The small 16–50mm F3.5–5.6 lens does not make the most of the body’s capabilities; choosing a more capable lens affects kit size. |
| Fujifilm X-M5 — compact mirrorless | Smaller and less expensive than the X-T50, according to DPReview; a compact option if portability is a priority. | Its 26MP sensor is unstabilized, and it has no electronic viewfinder. Those omissions can be drawbacks for still photography. |
| Ricoh GR IV — pocketable city-walk camera | A small, light fixed-lens camera suited to city strolling and street scenes. | It is not a substitute for a zoom camera or an interchangeable-lens system. |
OM System OM-5 Mark II: best for outdoor trips
TechRadar names the OM-5 II its best travel camera overall, while Digital Camera World highlights its weatherproof body, stabilization, and compact lenses. The combination makes sense when you expect handheld shooting outdoors and want a relatively small system. Its 20.4MP Micro Four Thirds sensor and 4K/30p video are the stated specifications; those figures do not make it the best fit for every photo or video priority. Consider the small grip and basic video features before choosing it.

Fujifilm X-T50 with 16–50mm lens: best for high-resolution travel photos
The X-T50 pairs a 40MP stabilized APS-C body with a 16–50mm kit lens, giving you more framing flexibility than a fixed-lens compact. DPReview describes the kit as travel-oriented, and National Geographic includes the X-T50 among its compact-camera picks. The resolution may appeal if detail is a priority, but it does not alone determine low-light results or overall image quality. DPReview also notes possible autofocus-tracking struggles, a small viewfinder, and limited battery life.
Rank #2

Sony a6700: best for a stills-and-video mix
The a6700 is a 26MP APS-C option with strong autofocus for stills and video, 4K recording, and a range of relatively compact lenses, according to DPReview. Your lens choice matters: the very small 16–50mm F3.5–5.6 keeps the kit compact but does not fully use the body’s capabilities. A more capable lens can change how much you carry, so choose based on the subjects and framing you expect rather than the camera body alone.
Rank #3
- 16MP Sensor: Captures detailed photos with a CMOS sensor for everyday shooting
- Optical Zoom: 4x optical zoom with a 27mm wide angle lens for flexible framing indoors or outdoors
- Full HD Video: Records 1080p video for travel clips, family moments, or simple vlogging
- Memory Support: Works with Class 10 SD, SDHC, or SDXC cards up to 512GB
- LCD Screen and Battery: 2.7in LCD screen with 2 AA alkaline batteries for convenient on-the-go use

Fujifilm X-M5: best when compact mirrorless size comes first
DPReview describes the X-M5 as smaller and less expensive than the X-T50. RTINGS added it as its compact mirrorless travel pick in its September 2026 update. It has a 26MP unstabilized sensor and no electronic viewfinder, so it gives up two features that can matter for still photography. Choose it if a compact mirrorless setup is more important to you than those conveniences.

Ricoh GR IV: best for pocketable city walks
National Geographic names the GR IV its street-photography pick, and TechRadar lists it as its best travel compact. Its small, light form suits walks when you want a camera close at hand. The fixed-lens design is the key compromise: it does not offer the zoom range or lens-swapping flexibility of a system camera.

What the 2026 guides’ picks tell you
These recommendations reflect different category priorities rather than one agreed-upon winner. National Geographic says its photo engineering team tested 26 cameras over four months for its compact-camera guide; that scope applies to its guide, not the camera market as a whole. RTINGS’ September 17, 2026 update selected the Fujifilm X-T5 as its top travel pick, the a6700 as its mid-range pick, the X-M5 as its compact mirrorless pick, and the Canon EOS R50 as its budget pick. TechRadar’s July 22, 2026 update named the OM-5 II best overall and GR IV best travel compact. Those differences reinforce why the right choice depends on how you travel and shoot.

Match the camera to your trip
- Outdoor, handheld travel: Start with the OM-5 Mark II if stabilization and weather-ready design matter more than maximum resolution or advanced video.
- Landscapes and detail: Consider the X-T50 kit if you want a high-resolution sensor and interchangeable-lens flexibility, and can accept its viewfinder, tracking, and battery caveats.
- Mixed photos and video: Look at the a6700, then choose a lens that balances the features you need against what you are willing to carry.
- Small mirrorless kit: The X-M5 may fit if you can live without in-body stabilization and an electronic viewfinder.
- City walks and street scenes: The GR IV is the most pocket-oriented option here, provided a fixed lens suits your photography.
