Useful USB gadgets do more than add another socket: they can connect a monitor, move files between newer and older devices, add a hardware sign-in option, or bring wired networking to a laptop. The right choice depends on the PC’s actual port capabilities, not just the shape of its USB connector.
What to check before choosing a USB gadget
USB-C describes a connector, not a guaranteed feature set. A USB-C port may support data, charging, video output, or only some of those functions. Check the specifications or manual for your exact PC before buying anything that depends on display output or power delivery; Dell’s USB ports FAQ likewise advises checking the computer’s documentation.
USB 3.2 defines 5, 10, and 20 Gbps data rates. USB-IF says the standard is backward compatible and connected products operate at the lowest speed capability in the chain, so the PC, accessory, and cable all matter. 1. USB-C multiport hub: add ports and useful connections
A multiport hub is useful when a laptop has too few connections for a monitor, USB accessories, or wired network. Depending on the model, it may combine USB data ports with HDMI, Ethernet, and power pass-through. These features and their limits vary; a USB-C port on the PC must support the functions you intend to use.

Check the port mix and host capabilities
Compare the exact number and type of data ports, their speeds, supported HDMI resolution and refresh rate, Ethernet rate, and power delivery. Also check whether the PC’s USB-C port supports video output. For example, Anker’s 533 USB-C Hub listing specifies three USB data ports, HDMI up to 4K at 30 Hz, and 1 Gbps Ethernet. Those are specifications for that listed model, not a guarantee that every PC connected to it can output that display signal.
2. Dual USB-A/USB-C flash drive: move files between connector types
A drive with both USB-A and USB-C connectors can simplify file transfers between a newer laptop or phone and a PC that still has USB-A ports. Before choosing one, check that the connector fits without blocking neighboring ports, then compare capacity, interface, read and write speeds, and operating-system compatibility.

Read speed is not write speed
Manufacturer speed figures are maximum published specifications, not independently measured results or a guarantee for your PC. SanDisk lists up to 400 MB/s read speed for its Ultra Dual Drive Go for listed capacities. Its Extreme Fit USB-C data sheet gives up to 400 MB/s read speed for 128 GB–1 TB capacities and notes lower write speeds. Do not assume those figures apply to other models, capacities, ports, or transfer conditions.

A FIDO2 security key is a physical accessory used for sign-in where the account or service supports it and the key has been enrolled. It may be a useful option for someone who wants a hardware-based authentication method, but buying the key alone does not secure an account automatically.

Check account support and recovery first
Verify that the services you use support the key’s sign-in method, then choose a connector that fits your devices (USB-A or USB-C) and check whether you need NFC. Plan enrollment and account recovery before relying on a key, so you know how you can regain access if it is lost. Google’s Titan Security Key information is one example of a manufacturer’s product and compatibility details; support varies by account and setup.
4. USB-C Gigabit Ethernet adapter: connect to wired networking
A USB-C Ethernet adapter adds a wired network connection to a compatible computer, which can be useful where Ethernet is available or Wi-Fi is unsuitable. Check the PC’s USB-C compatibility, supported operating system, and the adapter’s Ethernet speed. You will also need an Ethernet cable and access to a wired network.

If you also need extra USB ports or video output, compare an adapter with a hub that includes Ethernet; a single-purpose adapter will not supply those other connections. Examples of manufacturer specifications include Anker’s USB-C Gigabit Ethernet Adapter and Logitech’s USB-C Ethernet Adapter.
5. USB-C cable: match the connection to the job
A spare USB-C cable can be valuable when the original is missing or a cable is needed at a desk or in a travel bag. But the connector alone does not tell you its data rate, charging capability, or display support. Match the cable’s specifications to the PC, accessory, and intended use, and remember that a connection runs at the lowest capability among its connected products.
