A small 3D printer can fix the unglamorous failures that make a home lab frustrating: tangled Ethernet, inaccessible SD cards, hot single-board computers, loose drives and hardware consuming every spare surface. The five designs below target those problems directly. They are based on documented Raspberry Pi, cabinet and NAS projects; the exact board models, dimensions and personal print settings vary, so measure your own hardware before committing to a full print.
1. An expandable Raspberry Pi rack with sliding trays
One to three Pis are easy to tolerate. As the group reaches four or more, boards, power bricks and Ethernet leads become difficult to manage. Nathan Frank created a rack after cables became tangled, SD cards had to be swapped constantly and bare boards lacked protection. Sliding trays made reimaging and maintenance possible without dismantling the stack, while an expandable frame allowed additional Pis later.
The design demonstrates why a 3D printed Raspberry Pi rack mount should be planned around service access, not just density. Leave finger room for trays, identify each board, and reserve a path for power and network cables. A later revision added SSD support but revealed a serious failure: thick, inflexible USB-to-SATA cables stressed the tray until its plastic snapped. Flexible cables, larger bend radii and strain relief are therefore structural requirements, not cosmetic improvements.

Build checks
- Measure the board, connector overhang and cable bend radius before modeling.
- Test one tray with the heaviest intended drive and cable combination.
- Use captive nuts or heat-set inserts where repeated maintenance will wear printed threads.
2. A cable comb, lacing bar or printed patch panel
If you are searching for how to stop homelab cable spaghetti, start at the patch layer. In a typical 10-inch wall cabinet, a device and its bracket can leave only 40–60 mm of rear clearance inside an enclosure roughly 280–300 mm deep. Long patch leads then push against ports and block airflow.

A deliberate patch layer solves that geometry problem: use short patch cables, separate power and Ethernet routes, and anchor the bundle to a lacing bar or printed comb. A 1U lacing bar between a switch and patch point keeps cable weight off switch ports. Print the comb with openings sized for the cable count you actually have, and leave one or two empty positions for growth.
Installation sequence
- Measure the cabinet depth after the switch, bracket and plugs are installed.
- Place power routing on one side and data routing on the other.
- Install the lacing bar or comb before dressing cables.
- Use short leads and label both ends so maintenance does not require pulling the whole bundle.
3. A custom NAS or single-board-server enclosure
A stock case may protect a board while ignoring drive mounting, SATA routing, fan space, front USB access or rack integration. A 3D printed NAS case can solve those omissions in one enclosure. Eva Wong describes the advantage plainly: “A custom enclosure lets you solve problems the manufacturer never prioritized.”

Design around measured geometry rather than nominal specifications. Record board edges, every port position, mounting-hole spacing and the tallest component. Print a small I/O test frame first; a 0.5 mm measurement error can misalign an Ethernet cutout enough to force a complete reprint. Add vibration-reducing drive stands, a clean SATA path and a removable panel for service.
What to validate before the full shell
- Insert and remove each drive without flexing the board.
- Confirm USB, Ethernet, power and display plugs clear the openings.
- Check that the lid can be removed without disconnecting storage cables.
- Provide a defined fan position and unobstructed intake and exhaust.
4. A 60 mm fan shroud
Sustained transcoding, Docker stacks and Proxmox workloads need airflow that a passive board case often cannot provide. A printed 60 mm fan mount or duct can attach to an enclosure lid and direct air through an existing metal heatsink, improving the usefulness of a standard fan without pretending the plastic itself is a heatsink.

Thermally conductive filament is not a substitute for aluminum or copper: the ZimaSpace comparison reports negligible conductivity relative to solid metals. Choose material for temperature and mechanical demands instead. The same comparison lists a PLA glass-transition range of 55–65°C, about 80°C heat resistance for PETG and about 95°C for ASA. PETG is a practical default for a server enclosure, while ASA is better suited to higher ambient temperatures or sunlight; PLA is appropriate only where temperatures stay comfortably below its softening range.
Airflow details
- Match the duct opening to the heatsink, not merely to the fan frame.
- Keep the intake clear of cable bundles and provide an exhaust path.
- Use rubber washers or printed isolation features if fan vibration reaches drives.
- Verify temperatures under the workload that previously caused throttling.
5. A wall, VESA or compact rack mount
Once boards, hubs, mini PCs and storage occupy several surfaces, relocating the hardware can be a bigger improvement than redesigning each case. A VESA mount for a Raspberry Pi can place a single-board server behind a monitor; a pegboard adapter can move it onto a workshop wall; a compact rack mount can consolidate a switch, NAS and small computers in one serviceable location.

The cabinet approach illustrated by Tom’s Guide shows the payoff: switches, hubs, mini PCs, a NAS and a hardwired 2.5-gigabit connection can share one organized cabinet instead of scattered furniture. Treat the print as an access and ventilation project. Leave room to unplug power, remove storage and inspect fans; do not seal heat-producing equipment into a space merely because the mount fits.
Mounting checklist
- Confirm VESA-hole or rack-hole spacing and the fastener length.
- Account for the combined weight of the device, cables and power brick.
- Keep vents clear and maintain a path for warm air to leave.
- Test removal from the wall or monitor before final cable dressing.

Across all five, the cheapest print is the one measured before slicing. Decide where the power bricks live first, then design the enclosure, tray or mount around cable bend room, airflow and the next maintenance task—not just the current device count.
