Self-hosting means running a service on hardware you control, often at home. It can turn everyday interests—smart-home routines, music, photos, reading, or multiplayer games—into satisfying projects you can shape around your own habits. You do not need a dedicated server to begin, but you do take responsibility for setup, upkeep, and the data on it.
Here are five directions to explore. They are independent suggestions, not a claim about what appeared in an earlier installment.
1. Build a locally controlled smart home
A smart-home controller can bring devices and routines together: for example, you might make lights, sensors, and other compatible equipment behave according to schedules or conditions you choose. Home Assistant’s getting-started guide describes running the system on your own hardware at home and walks through choosing hardware, adding integrations, and creating automations. Home Assistant says most people can go from a fresh install to a working smart home in about an afternoon; that is the project’s own estimate, not an independent timing study.
The appeal is the chance to build routines around your home instead of relying entirely on one manufacturer’s app. Before buying or configuring a device, check the current Home Assistant compatibility information for that exact model and the functions you expect to use. A local controller does not guarantee that every device or integration will keep working without internet access.

2. Curate a personal media or music server
A media server can organize a personal collection and make it available to devices at home or, if configured for it, remotely. Keep the library to media you have the rights to use; a server is a way to manage and stream a collection, not a source for acquiring it.

These examples establish different possible tools, not a performance ranking. Unraid’s media-server overview lists Plex, Jellyfin, and Emby; Home Cloud’s self-hosting overview discusses Navidrome and Jellyfin. Compare the software’s current device support, installation and maintenance demands, remote-access needs, and the storage and resources your library requires before settling on one.

3. Make a personal photo and file cloud
Keeping a searchable photo archive or storing files, calendars, and contacts can make a useful self-hosting project. Home Cloud presents Immich as an app for photo and video storage. Unraid describes Nextcloud as a way to store documents, calendars, contacts, and photos. Those are different roles within the broader idea of keeping personal data on a system you administer.

A self-hosted library is not automatically a backup. If the server or its storage fails, the only copy may be lost. Plan a separate backup, keep it apart from the main system where practical, and test that you can restore files. The available descriptions do not establish a universal storage capacity or hardware requirement, so estimate your library size and check the chosen software’s current requirements.

4. Build a reading dashboard with RSS
If you follow blogs, news sites, or other publications, a self-hosted RSS aggregator can collect feeds into one reading dashboard. FreshRSS appears in Deployrr’s application catalog as a self-hosted RSS feed aggregator. You choose the sources and maintain the service, which makes this a small, practical project for shaping a reading routine.
The catalog establishes FreshRSS as an example, not as a comparative assessment against hosted readers. Check its current installation instructions and feed compatibility before choosing it, especially if you plan to access it from more than one device.

5. Host a game server for friends
A home server can also host a multiplayer space for a group of friends. In a TechRadar interview, Kris Moore of TrueNAS described home-lab uses that include “hosting game servers.” That supports the broad idea, but not a recommendation for a particular game, player count, or machine.

You will also need to decide who can connect and how you will handle updates and access. Requirements vary by game, so there is no general specification or player limit to apply to every home server.
How to choose a first self-hosted project
Pick the project whose everyday payoff is clearest, then work backward from its needs. A machine that is adequate for a reading dashboard may not suit a large media library or a game server; practical requirements depend on the workload. You may already own hardware that is suitable, and the sources do not establish a universal minimum specification.
- Start with a routine or collection. Identify a real job you want the service to do, such as organizing a music library or automating a light.
- Check compatibility and requirements. Verify support for your devices, clients, operating system, storage, and intended access pattern in the project’s current documentation.
- Account for administration. Installation is only the beginning: plan for updates, troubleshooting, and ongoing care of the host and its data.
- Decide how you will protect the data. For anything important, make a separate backup plan and confirm you can restore from it.
- Keep remote access deliberate. If you want to use a service away from home, consult its current security and network guidance rather than assuming that local hosting makes remote access safe by default.
Unraid’s home-server overview and the Home Assistant getting-started guide illustrate how one host can support different kinds of projects. They are project and vendor sources, not independent comparisons. Local control gives you room to tailor a service, but it does not by itself guarantee security, availability, or backup.
