Sony, Panasonic, Epson and Canon are Japanese companies; JVC has a Japanese ownership chapter, but Panasonic is no longer involved with it. That distinction matters: a company’s Japanese origins, its present corporate ownership and the history of a brand are not the same thing.

Japanese brands, Japanese parents and historical ownership

The five names often grouped together in this context are Sony, Panasonic, Epson, Canon and JVC. The first four are presented through their Japanese corporate histories. JVC’s connection is different: Matsushita, now Panasonic, acquired it in 1954, but Panasonic is no longer involved with JVC today. The list therefore is not five companies currently owned by one Japanese parent—or even five current subsidiaries of Japanese companies.

These are company histories, not product rankings. The available account provides no controlled testing or head-to-head product comparison.

How each brand’s Japanese story began

Sony: from Tokyo Telecommunications Engineering Corporation

Sony’s earlier name was Tokyo Telecommunications Engineering Corporation. The company began exporting transistor radios to the United States and Europe in 1957, then expanded into audio equipment, televisions and cameras. In 1968, it entered the American record industry through a joint venture with CBS; two years later, it became the first Japanese firm listed on the New York Stock Exchange. Those milestones describe Sony’s own development, not ownership by another Japanese company.

Panasonic: the Matsushita and National chapters

Konosuke Matsushita started making two-way electrical sockets with his siblings in Osaka in 1918. The business became known under the National name, and it began exporting speakers under the Panasonic name in 1955. Panasonic’s history is thus tied to Matsushita’s company and its evolving brands.

In April 2026, Panasonic reportedly contracted Chinese producer Skyworth to manufacture TV and home-entertainment products. That is a reported production arrangement, not evidence that Panasonic’s corporate nationality or ownership changed. Lumix is among Panasonic’s mirrorless-camera product lines.

Epson: printers emerging from Seiko’s timing work

Epson’s roots lie in Seiko’s quartz timepiece business. The company developed a timing printer in 1963 and the EP-101 miniature digital printer in 1968. A second generation of printers led it to establish Epson as its own brand in 1975. Epson printers and digital projectors remain familiar office-product categories.

JVC: a Japanese company with a complicated parentage history

JVC, or Victor Corporation of Japan, began in 1927 as an offshoot of the American Victor Talking Machine Company. RCA sold its JVC shares in 1937, and Matsushita acquired JVC in 1954. JVC later contributed to the spread of recorded video formats and invented VHS in 1976.

The acquisition is historical, not a description of JVC’s current relationship with Panasonic: Panasonic is no longer involved with JVC today. Current U.S. JVC offerings include earphones, cables and vehicle infotainment head units.

What to take away from the list

  • Japanese corporate histories: Sony, Panasonic, Epson and Canon are represented through their own Japanese origins and development.
  • Historical acquisition: JVC was acquired by Matsushita in 1954, but that former connection should not be presented as current Panasonic ownership.
  • Different kinds of milestones: The dates here mark founding, product development, brand transitions, exports or corporate events; they do not establish present-day parent-company structures for every brand.
