A smart plug can give a homelab operator a simple way to measure a device’s reported power use, automate a noncritical accessory, or attempt a remote power cycle. The useful setups are less about switching everything on a schedule and more about adding a measurement or control point—provided the exact plug exposes the needed features to your home-automation platform.

Choose a plug for the job, not just the outlet

Before building an automation, verify that the exact plug model supports the function you need and that your platform can see it. Some plugs report live power, accumulated energy, or other electrical measurements; capabilities vary by model. For example, Shelly describes its Plug PM Gen3 as a Wi-Fi plug with power measurement and lists Home Assistant among its integrations. Shelly’s smart-plug documentation lists power, voltage, current, and energy-consumption data as possible capabilities, not guarantees for every model.

Home Assistant’s TP-Link integration covers Kasa and Tapo devices, including plugs, and can expose energy use in dashboards. Check the model’s supported entities before buying: compatibility with a product family does not mean every model reports energy. A newly purchased plug also needs to be provisioned on your network before Home Assistant can use it.

Confirm the plug’s regional version and electrical rating against the device you intend to connect. The documentation cited here does not establish a universal accuracy level, maximum load, or suitability for every server, UPS, or high-current device. Follow the exact plug’s safety instructions and use case limitations.

1. Build a per-device energy baseline

Place a supported power-monitoring plug between the outlet and one server or compute node. Use the platform’s reported power and energy entities to establish what that individual device normally draws. This is more useful than treating the homelab as one undifferentiated load: if several machines share an outlet or circuit, a reading from one plug may not represent all of them.

In Home Assistant, an energy entity can also be displayed in a dashboard when the device and integration expose it. The TP-Link integration documentation describes energy usage support for compatible devices. Treat readings as the plug and integration’s reported values, not as a certified measurement of every component’s consumption.

2. Compare idle and workload readings

Once you have a baseline, compare a defined idle period with a known workload. Keep the measurement setup and time window consistent, and note what the machine was doing; a short burst of activity and a sustained job are not equivalent conditions. Repeating the comparison over time can show whether a configuration or workload changes the plug’s reported consumption.

  1. Record the reported power during a period when the machine is genuinely idle.
  2. Run a known workload and record the reported power over a comparable period.
  3. Compare the observations, noting workload, duration, and any system changes that could affect the result.

This comparison helps characterize a device, but it does not by itself establish a precise electricity bill or guarantee a particular saving.

3. Alert on an unexpected power change

A measurement entity can become an automation input: for instance, notify yourself if a device’s reported power stays outside its normal pattern for a sustained interval. Choose the threshold and duration from your own observations. No universal threshold is established for homelab servers, and a brief spike may be normal for one machine but unusual for another.

Home Assistant’s TP-Link integration supports plug switching based on schedules or events and energy usage in dashboards; measurement-driven alerts depend on the entities exposed by the exact device and integration. Prefer a notification over automatic power interruption: a change in consumption is a signal to investigate, not proof that a device is safe to shut off.

4. Schedule a noncritical accessory

A compatible plug and automation can switch an auxiliary device on a schedule or in response to an event. Home Assistant documents scheduling and event-based switching for supported Kasa and Tapo devices in its TP-Link integration, and its Shelly integration documents Shelly device actions. Exact actions depend on the plug and setup.

Use this for equipment that tolerates abrupt switching, not as a routine way to turn off a server or storage device. A scheduled cutoff during writes can interrupt work and risk data loss or filesystem problems. For equipment that needs a graceful shutdown, use its normal shutdown method and a suitable control workflow instead of cutting outlet power.

5. Keep remote power cycling as a last resort

A remotely controllable plug may help recover a suitable device when ordinary access fails, but it is an emergency control rather than a managed PDU or UPS. Abruptly removing power can cause data loss or filesystem issues, especially if a server or storage device is writing. Do not use the plug to interrupt storage or a server during writes, and do not assume every device is designed to recover safely after power is restored.

Before relying on remote recovery, establish a safe shutdown and restart plan for the connected device. The automation controller and the network path to the plug must also remain available; if either is down, the plug may not be reachable when you need it. Home Assistant advises favoring devices that work locally for reliability during an internet outage, while noting that app access and updates may require internet. Verify local control behavior for the exact plug and integration in your setup using its local-control guidance.

Keep the automation within its limits

  • Check whether the exact model exposes live power, accumulated energy, or both to your chosen platform.
  • Confirm whether control works locally or depends on cloud access, and test behavior during an internet outage.
  • Match the regional plug version and electrical rating to the connected equipment; follow the manufacturer’s safety instructions.
  • Reserve switching for devices that can tolerate it. For servers and storage, preserve graceful shutdown and avoid interruption during writes.
  • Use measured readings to guide investigation, not as a promise of bill savings or proof of a fault.

Home Assistant lists Green, Raspberry Pi, mini PC, NUC, and virtual machine as possible hosting options in its installation documentation; whichever host you use, remote recovery only works when the controller and network path remain available.
