NFC tags can make a phone workflow or useful information available with a tap—but they do not remember tasks or run automations on their own. Put a writable tag where you naturally need the information, then configure the phone or app that will read it.
What an NFC tag can—and cannot—do
An NFC tag stores or exposes data in a format a compatible phone can read. NFC Forum describes common tag records such as web links, contact data, Wi-Fi keys, messages, and phone numbers; a phone can initiate an action based on the tag’s NDEF content. The tag is the prompt or information carrier. Your phone and its software determine what happens next. NFC Forum explains NFC technology and NDEF records.
NFC is short range: Android Developers describes a typical operating distance of 4 cm or less. You may need to move the phone close to the tag and find the reader position on your device. Android’s NFC overview describes the technology and its use of NDEF data.
Five useful places for NFC tags
1. Near a smart-home control point
Place a tag near an entryway or in a room where you commonly want to interact with a connected device. It can point to a compatible smart-device setup or serve as the tap point for a phone workflow you have configured. NFC Forum identifies smart-device connections at home or work as a use case. The tag does not itself control a light, lock, or other device: the relevant device integration and automation must already be set up.

2. On a guest Wi-Fi card or shared-information spot
A writable tag can hold Wi-Fi information or contact data, both record types identified by NFC Forum. Put it on a card or in a place where guests can scan it when they need access. Treat the tag like a visible note: anyone who can scan it may be able to retrieve the information, so do not encode credentials you are not comfortable sharing.
3. On a storage bin or object that needs instructions
Encode a link to a checklist, manual, or inventory note and attach the tag to the relevant bin or object. A tap then takes you to the information without requiring you to recall where you saved it. NFC Forum identifies internet links as a common NDEF record. Keep the linked page accessible and update it when the instructions or inventory change.

4. At a recurring task location
Put a tag where a routine begins—for example, beside supplies you use for a recurring chore. With an appropriate phone automation, a scan can serve as a trigger for a reminder, habit log, or task entry. This is a configured phone workflow, not a built-in promise of NFC itself, and behavior depends on the device and software.

On Apple devices, background tag reading is available only on supported devices and has conditions that make it unavailable. Apple lists using Wallet or Apple Pay, using the camera, Airplane Mode, and a restart while the device remains locked among those conditions. Apple’s Core NFC documentation describes its reading behavior and constraints.

5. On a desk or bedside surface
Use a tag at a spot where you repeatedly reach for the same phone workflow, such as opening a relevant app or invoking a routine you have already configured. The phone and software execute that action after the scan; the tag is simply the convenient tap point. Since NFC works at close range, attach it where you can easily bring the phone’s reader near it.

Look for writable NFC tags or stickers if you need to encode your own record. NFC tags come in different form factors, but the sources cited here do not establish a particular chip, storage capacity, durability, or model-level phone compatibility. Before buying or encoding one, check that it can store the record you need and works with the phones expected to scan it. A standard NDEF record such as a link or Wi-Fi information is different from a workflow that depends on a phone automation: the latter also requires compatible software and configuration.
