Roku has several useful features that are easy to miss: Guest Mode protects your accounts when visitors use the TV, private listening moves sound to headphones, shortcut buttons replay frequent commands, voice search works differently by remote, and screen mirroring connects supported phones and computers. Each feature depends on your Roku model, operating-system version, country, remote and app support, so check those requirements before troubleshooting.

1. Turn on Guest Mode before visitors arrive

Guest Mode lets visitors use their own streaming-app accounts and subscriptions without exposing the owner’s apps, account details, unauthorized purchase options or recommendation history. Roku says guests can use their own accounts confidently, while the owner’s credentials remain separate.

What happens in Guest Mode

  • Guests sign in to supported apps with their own credentials.
  • Your installed apps and account information are protected from ordinary guest use.
  • Guest activity does not shape the owner’s recommendations in the usual way.
  • On the checkout date you set, Roku signs guests out and removes the apps and account information they added.

How to enable it

  1. Open Roku Settings and look for Guest Mode. On some Roku OS versions the feature is labeled Auto Sign Out.
  2. Turn the feature on and choose the checkout date shown on screen.
  3. Give guests the on-screen instructions for signing in to their own services.

Availability varies by country and Roku OS version. If Guest Mode is missing, check the device’s software-update screen and regional support rather than assuming the TV is defective. Roku’s platform supports more than 10,000 apps, but individual apps can still choose whether guest sign-in is supported.

2. Use private listening when the room must stay quiet

Private listening sends the sound from your Roku streaming device to headphones instead of the television speakers. It is useful for late-night viewing, a sleeping partner or anyone who needs a different volume level.

Two ways to connect headphones

Method What you need Important limits
Remote headphone jack A compatible Roku voice remote with a headphone jack and wired headphones Only remotes that include the jack support this method.
Roku mobile app The free Roku mobile app on a supported phone or tablet, connected to the same network as the Roku Support depends on the mobile device and Roku model; up to four mobile devices can connect to one Roku device for private listening.

Start mobile private listening

  1. Install and open the Roku mobile app.
  2. Select the Roku device you want to control.
  3. Tap the headphones or private-listening control and connect headphones to the phone or tablet.
  4. Adjust volume on the mobile device.

On supported Roku Streambar setups, private listening applies to the Streambar’s built-in streaming player, not to external inputs connected to the television or soundbar. If you hear no sound, confirm that the mobile device and Roku are on the same network, that the correct Roku is selected and that the program is playing through the supported Roku input.

3. Turn the 1 and 2 buttons into command shortcuts

Compatible Roku voice remotes can save a frequently used app launch or voice command to shortcut button 1 or 2. This is faster than opening the Home screen or repeating a long spoken request.

Roku Voice Remote | Replacement TV Remote Control with Voice Control, Simple Setup, & Pre-Set App Shortcuts - Compatible with Roku TV, Players, & Audio Devices (Pack of 2)
  • The information below is per-pack only
  • Easy voice search & control: Quickly search across thousands of top channels, play entertainment, control your streaming, and more with your voice
  • No more juggling remotes: Power up your TV, adjust the volume, control your Roku device, switch inputs on your Roku TV, and more—all in a tap
  • Pre-set channel shortcuts: Pre-set channel shortcuts let you launch popular streaming channels with the push of a button, all without having to scroll
  • Simple setup: Simply turn on your Roku device and pull the battery tab on the back of the remote and it should pair automatically

Save a shortcut

  1. Press the voice button and issue the command you want to repeat, such as opening a particular app.
  2. Immediately press and hold button 1 or 2 for five seconds.
  3. Choose Last voice command when Roku displays the save option.

Afterward, pressing that numbered button repeats the saved command. The exact choices depend on the remote and Roku software; a standard infrared remote without compatible voice features cannot use this save flow. If the save option never appears, verify that the remote supports voice commands and that it is paired with the Roku.

4. Know what Roku voice search can—and cannot—hear

Voice search is push-to-talk on most Roku voice remotes: the remote listens only while you hold the voice button. Roku describes this as the remote listening only when the button is being pressed, so an ordinary voice remote is not continuously recording commands.

  • One that does it all: No more juggling remotes. Roku Voice Remote Pro (2nd Edition) powers up your TV, adjusts the volume, and controls your Roku device.

Hands-free voice control

The Voice Remote Pro (2nd Edition) supports hands-free commands when its side slider is switched to green. Slide it back to disable hands-free listening. This capability is not automatically available on every Roku remote.

Why results differ

  • Roku Voice language support varies by country and device.
  • Content-discovery and search coverage differs among services and apps.
  • A command that works on one Roku model or software version may be unavailable on another.

For reliable results, hold the voice button on a push-to-talk remote, speak the title or actor clearly, and confirm that the remote is paired. If search returns no result, try the on-screen keyboard or check whether the requested service is available in your region.

5. Mirror a phone, tablet or computer on the TV

Roku supports screen mirroring from supported Android and Windows devices. Compatible iPhone, iPad and Mac devices can use AirPlay instead. Mirroring displays the source device’s screen on the television; it is different from launching a streaming app directly on Roku.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Connect an Android or Windows device

  1. Turn on screen mirroring in the phone, tablet or computer’s display or cast settings.
  2. Select the Roku device from the available-device list.
  3. Watch the TV for Roku’s connection request.
  4. Use the Roku remote to accept the request.

Use AirPlay with Apple devices

  1. Confirm that the Apple device and Roku are on the same network.
  2. Open the AirPlay control on the iPhone, iPad or Mac.
  3. Select the Roku device.
  4. Accept the connection request on the TV with the Roku remote if prompted.

Compatibility depends on the Roku model, Roku OS version, device platform and regional settings. The Roku mobile app can also serve as a remote, share personal photos and videos, and provide private listening on supported devices. If the Roku does not appear, check network membership first, then confirm that the model and software support the chosen mirroring method.
