I switched to FlorisBoard because it keeps persisted typing data on the device, publishes its source code, supports useful personalization without requiring cloud processing, offers serious layout and accessibility controls, and can be installed through user-controlled distribution channels. It is not invisible to Android: while active, a keyboard can access the focused text field and clipboard, so the privacy gain is reduced transmission and local storage—not a guarantee that your text is never seen.

What FlorisBoard is—and what “private” means here

FlorisBoard is a free, open-source Android input method designed to be customizable and privacy-respecting. The project currently describes it as beta software. F-Droid’s 2025 listing records version 0.5.2 and an Android 8.0-or-newer requirement.

A keyboard operates at a sensitive boundary. FlorisBoard’s privacy policy acknowledges that it can access the complete focused text field, the clipboard and, when relevant features are enabled, the system dictionary. Its stated protection is that accessed personal data is held locally in memory or private app storage and that persisted data does not leave the device. The project’s privacy policy, last modified March 2, 2026, puts it plainly: “No. Any personal data that is persisted is stored locally and never leaves your device.” Local handling limits transmission exposure, but it does not remove risks from Android, other installed apps, malware or a compromised device.

1. Sensitive typing context stays on the device

The first reason to switch is the location of your keyboard data. FlorisBoard says personal data it accesses is kept locally rather than sent to a remote service. That matters when you type passwords, private messages, medical information, work notes or search queries: the keyboard’s documented storage model does not require those persisted details to leave the phone.

This is a qualified privacy improvement, not a claim that FlorisBoard cannot see text. Any active Android keyboard has access to the field receiving input, and FlorisBoard also documents clipboard access. Use Android’s incognito or private-input options where appropriate, and treat the keyboard as software with privileged access rather than as a security boundary.

2. The code is available for inspection

FlorisBoard’s official repository publishes its source, issue tracker, release information, dependencies and Apache-2.0 license. Open source does not prove that every build is secure or bug-free, but it gives reviewers, developers and privacy-conscious users something concrete to inspect. Problems can be reported publicly, and releases can be compared with the code and dependency information instead of relying solely on a vendor’s assurances.

3. Personalization does not have to mean cloud learning

Spell checking, suggestions and glide typing can adapt to your behavior in FlorisBoard. The project says the resulting personalization is saved locally. It also says typing-behavior tracking stops in incognito mode or when no enabled feature requires it.

This gives you a practical choice: keep suggestions and gesture typing useful while retaining the learned data on the phone, or use incognito mode when entering information you do not want used for personalization. Feature behavior depends on which options you enable, so review the keyboard’s settings rather than assuming every feature is always active.

4. Privacy does not require a bare-bones keyboard

A private keyboard is only useful if you can live with it every day. F-Droid lists FlorisBoard support for many Latin layouts and language subtypes, themes with day/night switching, number layouts, special characters, emoji, and one-handed or compact modes. Those controls let you fit the keyboard to your hands, screen and writing habits instead of accepting a fixed interface.

Language coverage is the important limitation. F-Droid notes that non-Latin support is more limited than the project’s Latin coverage. Check your language and preferred layout before replacing your current keyboard, particularly if you rely on a non-Latin script, specialized autocorrection or a regional variant.

5. Installation can follow a user-controlled route

The project documents several ways to obtain FlorisBoard: F-Droid, GitHub release downloads and Google Play testing routes. The choice affects convenience and how much control you want over distribution and updates.

  1. Check compatibility: your phone must run Android 8.0 or newer.
  2. Choose a distribution channel: use the project’s documented F-Droid listing, GitHub release download or Google Play testing route.
  3. Install the app: follow the channel’s normal installation and update process.
  4. Enable the input method: open Android’s keyboard or input-method settings, enable FlorisBoard, then select it as the current keyboard.
  5. Configure privacy and usability: review enabled suggestions, spell checking, glide typing, clipboard-related behavior, incognito mode, language subtypes, theme and one-handed or compact layout.

Version availability can change by channel. The specific F-Droid record is version 0.5.2 from the FlorisBoard project in 2025, and the project still labels the app beta, so expect occasional feature changes or unfinished edges.

What you give up when replacing a mature default keyboard

The trade-off is maturity and breadth. FlorisBoard is beta software, and its documented non-Latin coverage is narrower than its Latin support. Some users may also prefer the polish, language breadth or tightly integrated services of a phone’s preinstalled keyboard. FlorisBoard’s advantage is control and inspectability; its cost is that you may need to test layouts, suggestions and gesture typing for your own language.

AnySoftKeyboard is another open-source multilingual option with an emphasis on privacy, according to F-Droid. The right choice depends on your language, desired input features and tolerance for beta software; neither an open-source label nor local processing alone is an absolute security guarantee.

Quick facts before you switch

Fact FlorisBoard detail
Current maturity Beta software, according to the project and F-Droid listing
F-Droid version record 0.5.2, FlorisBoard project, 2025
Minimum Android version Android 8.0 or newer
Documented data handling Persisted personal data is stored locally and does not leave the device
Distribution routes documented by the project F-Droid, GitHub releases and Google Play testing
Notable controls Latin layouts and subtypes, themes, day/night switching, number layouts, special characters, emoji, one-handed and compact modes

Bottom line

FlorisBoard is a strong fit if your priority is reducing cloud exposure while keeping a configurable, everyday Android keyboard. Its open code, local personalization and broad Latin-layout controls make privacy practical rather than purely theoretical. Before switching, verify your language support and accept the beta-status trade-off; the keyboard still has access to sensitive input while active, even when persisted data remains on the device.
