Start by removing unused leads and excess cable length. Then anchor individual cords with clips, bundle them with reusable ties, guide exposed runs through a sleeve, or hide slack and power equipment in an under-desk tray. The right mix depends on how many cables you have, whether you need frequent access, and whether your desk moves.
How to choose a cable-management approach
Match the organizer to the cable problem rather than buying a kit by default. Compare cable capacity, how it attaches, whether the run remains visible, how easily you can reach or adjust cables, and whether it fits your desk and its clearance.

Five ways to manage trailing cables
1. Audit cables and shorten unnecessary runs
Unplug leads you no longer use and look for duplicate or redundant connections. Where practical, replace excessively long cables with appropriately sized ones; less slack means fewer loops to route or conceal. HP recommends auditing cables before choosing organizers in its desk cable-organization guidance.

Clips or cable holders keep a charging, display, or peripheral lead on a chosen route and stop it sliding behind the desk. They work well when you want a cable within reach rather than hidden in a bundle. Before using an adhesive clip, check that its adhesive suits the desk surface and that the location is easy to clean and reach.

3. Bundle cords with reusable ties
Reusable ties gather cables that travel in the same direction and can be loosened when you add or remove a device. Leave enough room to avoid squeezing the bundle, and do not secure a damaged wire. VELCRO Brand’s electronics-organization guidance cautions against pinched or damaged wires.
4. Group an exposed run in a sleeve
A sleeve or wrap makes several cables follow one path, for example behind a monitor or from the desk toward the floor. It tidies a visible run but does not conceal it; depending on the design, cables may branch out at different points. Clips can hold the sleeve along the route. Dell describes sleeves, wraps, clips, trays, baskets, and raceways as options that suit different workspace setups in its cable-management systems guide.

5. Conceal slack and power equipment under the desk
An under-desk tray or basket can hold a power strip, adapters, and excess cable out of the main work area. Check the underside of your desk, the mounting method, available clearance, and whether the organizer will interfere with your legs or other equipment. Some mount with screws, others with clamps or adhesive; do not assume a tray is non-invasive. A desk-specific wire-management kit may combine accessories, but its contents and compatibility vary.

How to hide cables under a desk without creating new problems
- Plan the route: Group cables by where they need to go, then choose a path along the desk and down one desk leg where practical.
- Choose the attachment: Confirm whether a tray or holder uses screws, clamps, or adhesive, and check that the method suits the desk material and your installation constraints.
- Keep plugs reachable: Do not bury connections you may need to disconnect, and route cables so they cannot snag or cross a walkway.
- Check movement and clearance: For a sit-stand desk, raise and lower it through its full range and confirm the cables have enough reach and slack without pulling on connections.
An organizer can make cables easier to route and access, but it does not make an overloaded or unsuitable electrical setup safe.

When to reduce the number of cables instead
If many connections run from a laptop to the same desk devices, consider whether a compatible USB-C dock can consolidate them. HP’s desk cable-organization page says, “A USB-C docking station can consolidate many desk connections into a single cable.” This is HP’s vendor guidance, not a claim based on independent comparative testing, and a dock only helps when it supports your devices and required connections.
Wireless peripherals can remove selected leads, but they are not a universal fix: check that wireless operation meets your needs and that the devices you use support it.
