PLA can work well for many prints, but heat, prolonged outdoor exposure, repeated flexing and sustained loads can expose its limits. The right replacement depends on what the part must withstand—not on a universal ranking of filaments. This guide explains how to assess those conditions and choose a more suitable material or design.

Why a PLA part can fail outside the printer

A failed part does not, by itself, prove that PLA was the only cause. Material choice, geometry, layer orientation, print settings, sustained load and environmental exposure can all contribute. The first step is to identify what the part did, how it was used, what changed or broke, and which conditions were present.

  • Heat: A part under load in a warm environment faces a different problem from one exposed to sunlight or rain.
  • Outdoor exposure: Sunlight, moisture and weathering can matter over prolonged use.
  • Repeated flexing or impact: A part that bends or takes knocks needs different properties from a rigid support.
  • Sustained load or wear: A part that carries weight continuously or rubs against another surface may need a different material, geometry or orientation.
  • Chemical contact: Compatibility depends on the particular chemical, material grade and conditions.

Before changing filament, consider whether thicker sections, rounded corners, a different print orientation or reduced load could address the failure. For consequential parts, validate the actual geometry and use conditions rather than relying on a filament name or a single strength figure.

Five use cases to reassess before printing them in PLA

The five cases below are failure-prone situations to evaluate, not claims that every PLA part in these categories will fail. The outcome depends on the part and its operating conditions.

1. Parts left in hot environments

If a part softens or deforms where it is used, investigate the actual temperature and whether the part was carrying a load. Generic heat-deflection figures are not safe-use temperature limits for a specific printed object. UltiMaker lists 96°C as the “thermal resistance” for its Method-series ASA; that product-specific label should not be treated as a universal service temperature or silently equated with heat-deflection temperature. UltiMaker’s ASA material page provides that figure for its product.

For a hotter application, assess a candidate material’s thermal data alongside sustained load, geometry and print construction. A headline number alone cannot establish that a part will hold its shape in service.

2. Parts kept outdoors

Sunlight, rain and long-term weather exposure are reasons to consider ASA. UltiMaker describes its Method-series ASA as offering “UV and moisture resistance for demanding outdoor applications.” Stratasys says, “ASA is an all-purpose prototyping material with exceptional UV stability.” These are manufacturer descriptions, not guarantees of a particular service life for every filament or printed design. See UltiMaker’s ASA page and Stratasys’s ASA page.

Printer and process constraints also matter when choosing ASA. Confirm that the specific material is compatible with your printer and intended settings, and validate the printed part in its actual exposure conditions.

3. Indoor functional parts exposed to handling or splashes

PETG may suit some functional indoor parts, including some that are handled or exposed to splashes. It is not a universal solution for high heat or direct sun. Check the particular grade’s data and the part’s actual temperature and load; product-specific figures and third-party comparisons vary.

4. Parts carrying a sustained load or experiencing wear

For higher load or wear demands, nylon or reinforced grades may be worth evaluating. Published generic ranges are not a prediction for a particular print: grade, geometry and orientation change the result, and nylon performance can also vary with moisture. A redesign or different orientation may be as important as a material change.

5. Parts that bend repeatedly or take impacts

For a flexible bumper, pad or similar component, a flexible material category such as TPU may be relevant. That is a starting point, not a specific recommendation: match the material to the required flexibility and use conditions, and check product-specific data before printing.

Use condition Material path to consider What to verify
Sunlight, rain or prolonged outdoor exposure ASA Printer and process compatibility; the specific grade’s guidance; the printed part’s performance in its exposure conditions. Manufacturer UV claims do not promise a service life.
Functional indoor use, handling or splash exposure PETG may suit some parts Actual grade, temperature and load. Do not assume it solves direct-sun or high-heat exposure.
Higher load, heat or wear demand Nylon or a reinforced grade may merit consideration Grade, moisture sensitivity, geometry, orientation and sustained load.
Flexible bumper, seal or pad TPU is a possible material category Required flexibility and product-specific specifications; no universal grade is established here.

For any candidate, work through the relevant questions:

  • Thermal margin: What temperature will the part actually experience while carrying its real load?
  • Weather exposure: Will it see UV, rain, humidity or temperature cycling?
  • Mechanical behavior: Does the part need stiffness, toughness, repeated flexing or resistance to wear?
  • Chemical contact: Will it touch a particular cleaner, oil, solvent or other substance?
  • Moisture sensitivity: Could moisture change the material’s behavior or handling?
  • Printer requirements: Does the specific filament need an enclosure, a particular nozzle or other process conditions?
  • Design options: Can a change in geometry, orientation or load solve the problem more reliably?

What published material figures can—and cannot—tell you

UltiMaker lists a 2,300 MPa tensile modulus, 49 MPa tensile strength and 96°C thermal resistance for its Method-series ASA. Those are figures for that product, not values to generalize to all ASA filaments or every printed part. The page uses the specific label “thermal resistance”; it does not establish a safe-use temperature for a loaded component. See UltiMaker’s product data.

A 2026 preprint by Tomastik, Siskova, Vaclavek and Ctvrtlik describes controlled UV exposure of FFF samples made from PLA, ABS, PETG, HIPS and PC for 322 consecutive days (7,744 hours). That exposure duration is a study condition, not a conversion into outdoor service life. The work is a preprint, not peer-reviewed evidence of how long a particular part will last outside. A separate 2023 study’s available abstract identifies UV radiation, high temperature, high humidity, temperature cycles and weather as exposure categories. Without a verified result magnitude, it does not support a numerical prediction for a particular printed part. View the study record.

Third-party heat-deflection comparisons describe typical published low-load ranges and note variation by brand, color, orientation and geometry; for nylon, moisture matters too. Treat such ranges as screening information, not a substitute for a grade datasheet or testing under the part’s real load and conditions. See the comparison’s material guidance.

A practical decision process for your next print

  1. Describe the failure: Record whether the part warped, cracked, snapped, wore down or stopped fitting, and where the damage began.
  2. Record the conditions: Note temperature, sun or weather exposure, load, flexing, impact, moisture and chemical contact as applicable.
  3. Review the print: Check geometry, layer orientation and settings before treating the polymer as the sole cause.
  4. Choose a material path: Consider ASA for outdoor exposure, PETG for some indoor functional parts, nylon or reinforced grades for some higher-demand uses, and TPU for some flexible parts. Verify the exact grade and printer requirements.
  5. Validate the actual part: Test the intended geometry and orientation under representative conditions before relying on it for a consequential application.
