Consider color and workflow

If you like the refillable-ink approach but do not need the ET-8550’s wider format, the Epson EcoTank ET-8500 is a related smaller-format alternative. Digital Camera World describes it as a photo-and-document printer with bottled ink, six inks, and a scanner, and reports a 25-second borderless 4 x 6-inch color print. That figure is the publication’s reported performance for the ET-8500, not a general speed estimate for photo printers. Digital Camera World’s guide provides its description; RTINGS also characterizes the ET-8500 as a closely related, smaller-format variant.
Is home photo printing worth it?
It can be convenient and may cost less per print than an online service for an individual photo. Which? notes that services may become more economical for larger batches because of volume discounts, but its cited cost example concerns a specific printer and an 8 x 10-inch print; it is not a universal or current price comparison. Compare your own paper and ink costs with a current quote for the batch size you expect to order.
