For an open-source toolkit that can smooth a development workflow on Windows, start with the friction you actually face: PowerToys for window and keyboard tasks, Windows Terminal for working across shells, WinGet for command-line app setup, AutoHotkey for repetitive desktop actions, and ShareX for visual documentation. They solve different problems, so you do not need to install all five.
Which tool fits the workflow problem?
| Tool | Best fit | What it helps with |
|---|---|---|
| Microsoft PowerToys | Window, keyboard, and launcher friction | A collection of Windows utilities, including window layouts, key remapping, and workflow helpers. |
| Windows Terminal | Switching among command-line environments | A configurable interface for PowerShell, Command Prompt, WSL, and other shells. |
| WinGet | Installing and configuring applications | Command-line package management for app setup. |
| AutoHotkey | Repeated desktop actions | Scripts and macros that automate Windows tasks. |
| ShareX | Explaining what appears on screen | Screen captures and recordings for bug reports, reproduction notes, or visual documentation. |
This is a practical shortlist based on each project’s stated purpose, not a measured productivity ranking. Choose by the friction you want to remove and the amount of configuration you are willing to maintain.
1. Microsoft PowerToys for window and keyboard friction
Microsoft describes PowerToys as free, open-source utilities for Windows power users and developers. It is a collection rather than one single-purpose application, so you can enable the utilities that suit your routine.

- FancyZones helps arrange application windows into layouts.
- Keyboard Manager remaps keys and shortcuts.
- Command Palette can launch apps and commands, search files, invoke WinGet, switch windows, access clipboard history, and open configured Windows Terminal profiles.
- Workspaces can launch a set of applications into chosen positions.
Command Palette needs to be enabled, and PowerToys must be running in the background for its features to be available. See Microsoft’s Command Palette overview for its current behavior and configuration. PowerToys features and requirements can change; check the official PowerToys documentation for current compatibility and installation guidance.

2. Windows Terminal for working across shells
If your day moves between PowerShell, Command Prompt, and WSL, Windows Terminal gives those environments a configurable interface in one place. It is useful when you want to keep multiple shell profiles available without treating each shell as a separate terminal app. Microsoft’s Windows developer-tools guide describes Terminal as a customizable terminal for these and other shells.
Terminal hosts the shell; it does not replace the shell or make different environments identical. Check the Windows Terminal documentation for current setup details and supported configuration options.
3. WinGet for repeatable app setup
WinGet lets you install and configure applications from the command line, making it a useful part of a scripted or repeatable Windows setup. Microsoft includes it among its Windows developer tools and documents its use in the WinGet documentation.

It is a package-management tool, not a complete development environment. It does not install every application, and using it does not guarantee that two machines will have identical environments: package availability, versions, configuration, and other machine-specific details matter. Review the current catalog and instructions before relying on a setup script.
4. AutoHotkey for repeated desktop actions
AutoHotkey is a Windows scripting and macro-creation utility. It is worth considering when you can describe a repetitive desktop action precisely and want to automate it. For example, a developer might script a sequence of keystrokes or window actions that they repeat during a routine task; the specific automation depends on the task and the script you create.
Automation takes deliberate setup and maintenance. Scripts can behave differently as applications or workflows change, so keep them understandable and review them when the task they automate changes. Consult the AutoHotkey project site for current project information.

5. ShareX for screen documentation
ShareX supports screen capture and recording, which can help you document a bug, show a UI behavior, or prepare a visual explanation for a teammate. The project also describes uploading images, text, and other files to destinations. Before using an upload feature, check where the file will be sent and whether that destination is appropriate for its contents.

For sensitive screens, credentials, customer data, or unreleased work, capture only what is necessary and review the destination before sharing. See the ShareX project site for current features and setup information.
How to choose what to install
- Choose Windows Terminal if moving between shells is the main annoyance.
- Choose WinGet if you want to install or configure apps from scripts or the command line.
- Choose PowerToys if window layouts, keyboard mappings, or a launcher would help.
- Choose AutoHotkey when you have a specific, repeatable desktop action to automate.
- Choose ShareX if your workflow includes recording or explaining what is happening on screen.
Start with one tool that addresses a concrete bottleneck. Add another only if it solves a different problem, and verify current system requirements and installation instructions on the official project pages before adopting it.
